Thoughts In Print - from Pastor Sue

This weekend we celebrate Holy Cross Sunday, a festival  in the church year that rarely occurs on a weekend and so is rarely recognized in our worship services. Let's face it, it's actually downright obscure. So what is Holy Cross Sunday about anyway? Well here goes a little, very little, church history... The festival goes back to a story from the 4th century about the discovery of what was thought to be the sites if Jesus' crucifixion and burial, and along with them the remains of the "original" cross on which Jesus was crucified, by an archeological effort involving emperor Constantine's mother Helena. The festival was first established at the dedication of basilicas, or churches that also serve as pilgrimage sites, on these sites by the early church and it has taken a number of forms throughout its history.

Regardless of the historical significance, the bottom line for us as Christians, and Lutheran flavored Christians at that, has nothing to do with the celebration of a relic, the physical remains of a wooden cross, but rather what Christ accomplished through it. Paul says it very plainly in several verses from one of our lessons for this weekend:

1 Corinthians 1:18-21 (The Message) - The Message that points to Christ on the Cross seems like sheer silliness to those hell-bent on destruction, but for those on the way of salvation it makes perfect sense. This is the way God works, and most powerfully as it turns out. - It's written,

- I'll turn conventional wisdom on its head,

- I'll expose so-called experts as crackpots.

So where can you find someone truly wise, truly educated, truly intelligent in this day and age? Hasn't God exposed it all as pretentious nonsense? Since the world in all its fancy wisdom never had a clue when it came to knowing God, God in his wisdom took delight in using what the world considered dumb-preaching, of all things! -to bring those who trust him into the way of salvation.

To the Jews, Jesus death like a criminal on a cross was a scandal many could not accept as in keeping with the behavior of a Messiah, even today. And I wonder if in some ways we struggle with what we profess we believe as well. Because it's VERY difficult to accept that our faith is completely counter cultural; that it is centered, and finds its power, in what the world would otherwise define as weakness and shame. It's hard for us to really embrace a life that goes against the flow and sometimes may even make us look a little foolish in the eyes of the world. But, if we are to be honest with ourselves, it is the life our faith celebrates.

Does a death on a cross make sense to you? Does the reality of a God who is willing to get down and dirty and be one of the real people instead of one of the rich and famous give you pause every single day of your life in a way that influences the way you think and act? Then this is the festival for you. Because Holy Cross day is nothing more than a way for us to refocus on the reality of a life lived differently that changed the world forever.

Celebrate the power of the cross this weekend on Holy Cross day. And celebrate it every single day of your life. Remember that it is not the wisdom of the world that defines us but rather the love of a God who reveals himself to us in ways we would never expect. Seek him, seek Jesus, and the power of the most Holy Cross!

Update on Quilts for LWR

Our twenty-two quilts are on their way to West Africa - the country of Burkina Faso.  Anyone, wanting to know more about Burkina Faso, Wikipedia has a comprehensive history of the country.  I did give Pastor a printout from  Wikipedia and other sources.  It is a country that I had never heard of - interesting isn't it!

The quilt display in the Narthex is growing and probably will be heading out to LWR in October.

Thanks to everyone who has helped make a difference in people's lives!

Update on Sewing School in Haiti

Update for Sewing School:  Classes have been progressing well this year. The instructor separated the students by ability and it seems to be working much better. The pictures show some of the items they have made.

This class will end in March and a new one will begin. Each new student receives a sewing kit and lesson book when they begin. In each kit is a large and small pair of scissors, pins, needles, snaps, a tape measure, small ruler, a thimble and a pin cushion. If anyone has any of these items and would like to donate them, just bring them to the church in a bag with my name on it. I will be putting together 15 kits for the new students. If you are not using your JoAnn's coupons please put them in my mailbox #32. The coupons help keep the costs down for the supplies.

The graduates receive a sewing machine along with a maintenance package for them to take care of their machine. Each pack contains an extra belt, an awl, a screw driver, a pair of pliers, sewing machine needles and sewing machine oil. This may be the last year that they receive a machine as the machines are getting more difficult to find here in the U.S.

I am not quite sure when I will be going to Haiti in 2015. I am waiting to hear when teams will be going. If anyone would like to join me, please know that you are welcome.

Thank you for your continued support and prayers.

Penny

The other is to cut up and split oak logs from two large trees (about 8 cords) that have been taken out at Braithwoods (Jack Gordons) house to be sold to members of the congregation. This would be over a couple of days and deliver on a Sat, in Oct to those who signed up for the wood.

A brunch will immediately follow the service in the Fellowship Hall and Confirmation parents and children can then gather in the sanctuary at 11:45 for a brief orientation meeting.

THANKS to our Volunteers!

Thanks go out to Barbara Wagner, and Sheri Perkins for organizing the picnic on Sunday, September 7th - and for doing all the shopping,; to Brian Miller, and Jamie and Dale Millere for trucking the tables to the camp and setting up everything before everyone arrived and for cleaning up. An extra big thanks goes out to Mike Masley for doing ALL the cooking (couldn't have done it without his help)  If you missed it you missed a great day.  The weather was perfect and the food was beyond delicious - plenty for all.   The kids enjoyed the water (and a few adults) plus the canoes and paddle boats were put to good use most of the day.

Thanks also to our inspired Sunday School teachers who kicked off the new year last Sunday.  They are making an impact for eternity on our young members! Look for their names to appear soon on our giving tree in the entryway and take a moment to personally thank them.

Come and see what an enormous and far-reaching impact Lord of Life members have made this past summer. Attend the Mission Possible brunch on Sunday, September 28. Learn of opportunities for all to serve. Blessed to be a Blessing Surveys will be available to assist you in selecting activities that will utilize your God-given gifts to bless others. We currently have openings for worship assistants for all services and an upcoming training session will be held on October 12. Your mission, should you choose to accept it...

A View from the Pew

I am sitting in a pew before the start of the service, nodding to folks as they come in.  The fall season is upon us and there is always excitement in the air.  I see an older couple who I remember from when I was younger.  I see a young family with a new baby and remember when my daughter babysat for the mother of that young child.  I feel peaceful, and I feel that I am home.  The people filling the pews are my church family, and it is good to see them again.  When I am not able to be at service, something is missing.  What is it?  It is the opportunity to worship with my extended family.  An opportunity to see folks that I hold dear even if I only see them on a Sunday or on an occasional Sunday.  An opportunity to pray for those in the congregation who have a need for our prayerful support.  As a recipient of those prayers myself, I can't explain what an uplifting experience it is to know that your church family is praying for you.  Sunday school will be back in full swing, the choir performs at the early service, we are getting ready to celebrate Reformation Sunday in November, homage to Martin Luther, as well as preparing for the Advent of our Lord.  The fall season is always my favorite time of year.  It is a time for new beginnings.
cartoon of people

We have some ongoing "problems" at Lord of Life, a drop in attendance and in giving.  We need to remember that our congregation is made up of human beings, all of us flawed in one way or another.  As human beings, we disagree with some of the policies or programs in the church and that is okay.  The way to handle our concerns is to be vocal.  Do not demonstrate your disagreement by not coming to service or by not meeting your pledge.  Your very attendance and sharing of time and talent is what lets the congregation support all of the marvelous programs that continue at Lord of Life.  Talk with your Pastors, communicate with your council, become part of a group to make change.  Do not punish yourself by not being part of the church family and experiencing the wonderful sense of belonging that can be part of that experience.

When we have not been able to attend service on a regular basis, I always feel at peace and HOME when I get back to worship.  All of the programs, all of the policies etc. are wonderful but the primary reason that we all come to Lord of Life is to worship our Lord together.  This is a place where the cares of the world should be parked at the curb.  We have the opportunity to be grateful for all of our blessings, the fact that we have what we need and mostly what we want.  There is a sense of belonging to something greater than just ourselves.  This place, this church is our home and God has invited us in no matter how faithful we are, no matter what frame of mind we are in, no matter how distracted we may be.  Remember that on Saturday evening or Sunday morning when it is easier to be distracted with something else. Come home.
