From the desk of Pastor Dave...
|
Brothers and Sisters...
In parish ministry, "doing the numbers" often means filling out the annual parochial report for the ELCA which then passes on the info to the New Jersey Synod. We report figures for income, expenditures, benevolence, assets, debts, members received (as a result of baptisms, affirmations of faith and letters of transfer), members lost (as a result of deaths, transfers and inactivity), baptized and confirmed membership and average weekend worship attendance...and more!
But numbers are only helpful if they represent how people are being moved by the Holy Spirit to commit to following Jesus and consistently discovering how to love God and neighbor. So let me "do a few of the numbers" with you that reflect what God has been and is continuing to do in, with, and through us at Lord of Life.
451,656 = the number of quilts members and friends of the ELCA sent around the world through Lutheran World Relief to help needy people in the year 2013... 22 = the number of quilts LOL sent several weeks ago to add to this year's effort... 14 = quilts now ready to be added to this outreach. (Check them out they're beautiful!)
50 = the number of treadle sewing machines that have been sent to Haiti to assist in the work being done in the Penny Miller Sewing Academy... 15 = the number of students presently enrolled in this school. (This ministry will soon be featured in the NJ Synod's Jersey Jottings where our own Penny Miller will share the story with the church-at-large!)
13 / 7 / 2 = the number of youth / adults / visitors who traveled to Oneida, New York to do flood relief work with 7 families and bring hope to a community that experienced what we did 2 years ago along the Jersey coast and 10 years ago in Burlington County. (It was a time for a little blood, lots of sweat, hard work, and ample quantities of laughter!)
180 / 9 / 8 = the number of meals served at Union Temple Mission in downtown Washington, D.C. by / youth / adults who worked to make this one facet of their trip to our nation's capital a memorable encounter with homeless men and those living in transitional housing. (The story shared by several of them before we served was inspirational and humbling!)
1640 = the number of sandwiches made by the Helping Hands brigade in the first 6 months of 2014 and taken to the Christian Caring Center in Browns Mills to help provide food and hope for homeless men, women, and children in Burlington County. (With the full knowledge that there are close to 2000 homeless neighbors in our county alone!)
$12,000 = the benevolence we have shared in the first 6 months of 2014 with the ELCA and NJ Synod...
$1536 = the financial gift we have sent to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal this year. (These monies have a huge impact on ministry in New Jersey, the USA and around the world!)
6 = the number of baptisms at LOL since June...
447 = the number of baptisms in the history of our congregation... and FYI !... 6 = the number of twins who have been baptized and
2 = the number of triplets who have found their way to the font in our congregation. (And the age of the most senior person baptized at LOL is....74!)
3 = the number of members who have been ordained to the ministry of Word and Sacrament (Billy Magee, Matt Cimorelli and Gary Stiegler)...1 = the number of members to be ordained this September 21st (Gary Woodruff)..2 = the number of members awaiting a call or still in seminary (Ryan Paetzold and Peter Edwardsen).
|
|
|
11 = the number of members who are 90 years or older and who continue to be some of our most active congregants. (Our most senior member is Edna Eyler who just turned 99 this past week and the closest senior to her is Fred Cutts who only recently moved in with his son Glenn and family and now can help take care of some of the mowing and harvesting on the farm...Amen!)
9 = the number of Boy Scouts who earned their Eagle Award while members at LOL... 3 = the number of Girl Scouts who earned their Gold Award while members at LOL...
2 = the number of Boy Scouts actively pursuing projects at our church which would allow them to earn this honor. (Their work has blessed our congregation and the community at large and supplements the projects completed by other scouts who have since moved on to other places!)
Yes, numbers can help tell the story of a faithful people and I trust the figures you have just seen will remind you of the many ways God has counted on us to declare a word of love, hope, and healing. In the days ahead, let us continue to "count on God" for all we need and so much more!
Your Brother in CHRIST, Pastor David Jones

THANK YOU for everyone who has responded to our 'summer drought' appeal so far! We have made a great start to closing the deficit for our spending plan this year - over $16,000 has been received or pledged from our members and friends. If you are able to help, please consider if you are able to help us close the gap to meet our planned activities for this year. 'Many hands make light work' applies to this area - any contribution is valued and appreciated and will help! And thanks for everything you do to help our great ministries at Lord of Life!
==================================
Fall Stewardship Artwork Contest We'd also like to announce a 'contest' for our fall stewardship campaign. To decorate the bags that will be used for the stewardship materials, an image / logo is required. Last year we used the 'God's Work, Our Hands' as shown. Anyone interested in participating please submit your artwork to 'lordlife.news@gmail.com' by the weekend of Aug 23-24. Either a sketch (drop at church office) or electronic version may be submitted. The winner will get the knowledge they helped the campaign, and will get a few extra bags with their artwork! Thanks!

2014 Vacation Bible School Jungle Safari!
From the stories to the games to the music to the crafts and most of all the great kids who participated and helped, our Jungle Safari was a blast! From three year olds to adults, we learned God is 'Creator', 'Provider', 'Protector', 'Savior' and our 'King', and we can count on Him! Thanks to everyone who made this week possible! Your gifts of time, talents, and treasure made a huge difference in the lives that were touched by this ministry.
If you missed out on being a part of two of our continuing service projects, you're not too late! You may still bring in snacks for our troops or donate to the Malaria Campaign for the next 2 weeks! Thanks!
