The Message - from Pastor Dave
|
Brothers and Sisters...
I thought I might share with you "what I learned on our 18th Senior High Mission Trip this Summer!"
+ "Some congregations really know how to provide the ministry of HOSPITALITY"
...Saint Paul's United Methodist Church in Oneida, New York is a case in point! In the brief time that this congregation housed us, they also hosted a Girl Scouts awards night, a Weight Watchers meeting, provided space for a Congressional election as a polling place and were preparing to host an American Red Cross Blood Drive and a group of 30 volunteers from a church that was coming to continue the flood recovery effort just like we had. And their extensive Community Garden was being farmed by members and friends to help provide for 4 local food pantries.
+ Healthy communities often reflect a strong Ecumenical spirit"
...While we worked in the Oneida area, we were blessed by the support of numerous churches that cooperatively provided us with encouragement. The United Methodist Men's Ministry in the region invited us to a tail-gate party before a Syracuse Chief's baseball game (where I had my first Coney dog!). A non-denominational church, the Assembly of Praise, provided a place for us to gather for lunch and use their rest rooms and even served us a meal one day. And speaking of meals, a local Presbyterian congregation provided two dinners for us at the Methodist church where we were being housed. Just as important, the local YMCA allowed us to use their shower facilities (what a relief!) and made their swimming pool available to us one night.
+ "Teenagers working with caring adults can provide amazing support to people recovering from natural disasters like a flood"
...Our 13 teenagers all learned new skills as they invested themselves in the work of flood recovery under the watchful eye of 7 adult coaches who worked side-by-side with them on 6 projects. Together, these 20 team members and helpers from the community, worked on insulating walls, installing floors, building stairs, constructing a porch, digging a trench, finishing drywall and painting and nailing up trim. Local families were extremely thankful.
+ "Good, clean (most of the time!) fun can be part and parcel of a church mission trip experience"
...If you ask some of the team members what they remember about this particular trip you might hear them say, "The ice cream at Coneheads"..."Playing wiffle ball, basketball or Twister"..."Messing with bubbles"..."Eating the salt potatoes at the Syracuse Chief's game"..."Driving go-karts, riding the carousel, shopping or making a bear at the mall"..."Cruising on the Erie Canal and experiencing the 20 foot drop and rise of the water in the Lift Lock near Herkimer". Fun is good and Godly!
+ "Stepping outside of our personal comfort zone is a healthy reminder of some of the challenges faced by millions of people around the world...daily"
...When one is compelled to work in heat and humidity or deal with sawdust, adhesive or spackle while wearing protective glasses or a mask, one begins to appreciate the effort of those who often labor on our behalf. Sleeping on a cot or couch or using a toilet or shower that is not familiar is another way for us to cultivate compassion for those who live without these amenities all the time. Becoming part of a mission team that is a unique blend of youth and adults (some on a trip for the first time!) is challenging and rewarding. And this group, ably led by Jill Glossner and composed of marvelous youth and adults, were truly blessed and became a blessing to others!
The opening prayer from our Mission Trip devotional booklet is a fitting way to conclude my reflections and can serve as an invitation to future efforts as well!

"Lord, we are ready. We are here in this place to be Your servants. We want to please You, both those who have done this before and those of us who are brand new at it. We enter this week looking to receive nothing in return. We expect nothing from those we serve. You Son taught us to live without condition. We will show the world that kind of love this week, Lord. We will work with each other side by side. We are energized, Lord. We can't wait to begin! Help us to keep this feeling the entire week. Keep our hearts and minds on the work before us. We know that we are the only Jesus that some people will ever see. Help us to show them the true Christ. Help us to show the unconditional love of our Savior. With Your help we can. Amen!"
Your Brother in Christ, Pastor Jones

LOL Senior High Mission Trip
|

On June 22nd, twenty-one people headed to Oneida, New York for Lord of Life's 19th Senior High Mission Trip. Unfortunately, one did not make it. Jack Gordon, who graciously agreed to drive his own vehicle to carry supplies broke down on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. We off loaded people and supplies and Jack headed south to get his vehicle repaired. Despite the troubling start, the remainder of the trip went well. Thirteen high school kids learned how to spackle, lay insulation, make steps, paint, cut and hang trim, dig footings, and lay flooring. Many thanks to the adult volunteers that taught them...Fran Bubeck, Bill Dreisbach, Ed Harding, Pastor Dave Jones, Bob Sunbury and Mark Valesey. Also a shout-out to Lu Hourihan for organizing our going away breakfast and to the Jagiela Family, Donna Yates, Sara King & Kaitlyn Glossner for contributing casseroles and food.
We also found some time to enjoy ourselves. We tailgated with the Methodists at the Syracuse Chiefs/Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs game, we toured the Erie Canal and went through an actual lock (#18), went to the Destiny Mall in Syracuse where some rode go karts and others shopped, swam, and enjoyed fellowship at the local ice cream parlor. The remainder of the time we did devotions and just got to know one another.
The kids always impress me with their willingness to lend a hand, but what most impressed me this year was the graciousness of the people in the whole town. Everywhere we went, people thanked us for being there to help. We stayed at St. Paul's Methodist Church, while the Oneida Full Gospel Assembly hosted us for lunch everyday, and the Presbyterian Church of Oneida prepared dinner for us on two occasions. The "Y" opened their doors to us for showers and an hour of open swimming. And of course the homeowners couldn't have been more grateful. That is what mission trips represent...people helping people. I hope next year you will consider attending one. I can tell you from experience that it lifts both your mind and body with the Holy Spirit!

Fuller Center for Housing

1) THANKS TO LORD OF LIFE!
The Fuller Center for Housing - NJP would like to express our thanks to Lord Of Life for allowing the Fuller Center Bike Adventure Cyclists to stay in the building on June 7th and 8th. They enjoyed their time with us and the opportunity for local food, hot showers, and a place to lay their heads and rest their bodies before the next leg of the journey. They especially enjoyed the church services and the chance to renew spiritually. This annual Bike Adventure is the primary means by which Fuller Center raises awareness and funds to support the international effort to provide folks with a simple decent place to live and eradicate poverty housing. Providing a night's rest to the riders on this mission is more significant than you may realize and is greatly appreciated!
- In His Name - Merle Brown, President, Fuller Center for Housing - NJP
2) VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY!
The Fuller Center for housing in the New Jersey Pines will be hosting 6 groups in the Brigantine Area for a week beginning 13 July. One of these is a group of Lutherans coordinated by Lutheran Social Ministries. What is needed are people who can spend a day, two, or more (maybe the whole week?) who can function as a group lead and supervise and monitor the group as they work and if required act as a liaison and call the construction lead to have questions answered, request materials, etc. You do not need to be an experienced contractor, but if you have experience with simple repairs, painting, etc. that is certainly a plus. If you can volunteer for even just a day, your assistance would be VERY appreciated. If interested please contact Neil Brown at neil@fchnjp.org

Solar Power Update - June 2014
|
A great summer so far, 'harvesting' the solar power that the sun is beaming down. In June there were 3 days when over 300KWH of power was produced! Our power bill for May was 'zero' (Jun was $10) but we are looking forward to everyone saving energy at the church (turning off un-needed lights, keeping AC down, etc.) to further help with savings. The more we make 'while the sun shines' the better!
