From the desk of Pastor Dave...

Brothers and Sisters...

We all have Pastor Bob memories.  Throughout his 94 years of life, 60+ years of ordained ministry and 20 years as a member and Pastoral Assistant at Lord of life, Bob reflected the love of Christ in his own unique and marvelous way.

Some of my memories of Pastor Petersen include his...

+ Favorite biblical verse...John 3:16 - "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life."  (This verse is often referred to as the "gospel in miniature"!)

+ Favorite hymn of faith...Beautiful Savior - "Beautiful Savior, King of Creation, Son of God and son of man.  Truly I'd love Thee, Truly I'd serve Thee, Light of my Soul, my Joy, my Crown"  (This was the hymn used to conclude every concert given by the Upsala Choir of which Bob was a proud member!)

+ Passion for his Norwegian heritage..."Ufta!...Lutefisk (and sir names that end with...en not...on!")

+ Joy at telling Sven and Olie jokes and stories (with Lena thrown in occasionally for good measure!)

+ Pride in his Brooklyn (where he was born!) and Staten Island roots (where his memories of celebrating Christmas morning at the "old folks home" with carols and hot chocolate and pancakes were heart warming!)

+ Love for his precious Kay and their brood (I can't tell you how many times I viewed photos of children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and their pets!)

I also treasure some of the shared experiences that Bob and I had in pastoral ministry...

+ He was the Pastor Developer of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Somerville, New Jersey and I at LOL.

+ He was instrumental in the construction of two sanctuaries in the New Jersey Synod (Christ LC in Camden and Saint Paul LC in Beachwood and I at LOL.

+ He supported the role of women in ordained ministry (voting in the affirmative as a delegate at the LCA convention in 1976 and shepherding the call of one of the first women in the New Jersey Synod shortly thereafter) and I at LOL (where  2 interns and 4 seminarians, all women, were prepared to serve the church in "the ministry of word and sacrament".)

My fondest memories of Pastor Petersen are of the wonderful ways he lived out his faith as parishioner, colleague, mentor, friend and brother in Christ.  When he was 92, Bob sent a letter of resignation to the congregational council at Lord of Life (which by the way was refused!) based on his continuing health challenges.  A portion of that letter follows.

"It has been a real joy and blessing to have had the opportunity to serve, even in limited ways, the loving caring people of Lord of Life.  They have enriched my life is so many ways.

If there is any way I can be of service to Lord of Life Church or any of its members, please call on me.

May our loving Savior continue to bless and guide you, the Council, our staff members, and our pastors, in the ministry of Lord of Life Church.  Gratefully, Bob"

With all of you I pray that Pastor Bob rest in God's peace with the love of his life Kay...until we all meet again!

Your Brother in Christ, Pastor David Jones

Some Thoughts from our Newest Field Ed Student

Dear Lord of Life:

You may have noticed a person wearing a clerical collar hanging around Lord of Life...

Let me introduce myself to those who do not know me. My name is Peter Edwardsen, and I have been a member of Lord of Life for so long that I have forgotten the exact amount of years. (I do recall taking communion around a foul line in the all-purpose room at the school in Indian Mills). You may have also met either my son Sammy or my daughter Izzy running around, or my wife Laura (to whom I have been married for twelve years) trying to keep up with both of them.

I was lucky enough to be assigned to my home congregation for part of my second year of field education through the Lutheran Theological Seminary of Philadelphia. My first year of field education was completed at our sister congregation, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Marlton.

Over the years at Lord of Life, I have served as a confirmation class teacher, assistant minister, and was active in youth ministry as a teenager (including the first mission trip ever at Lord of Life). Before feeling a call to ministry, my background was as a teacher, specializing in social studies and special-needs students at both the high school and elementary levels. My theological areas of interest include Old Testament studies and the effect of ancient cultures, such as the Assyrians and Babylonians, on both Hebrew culture and Scripture.

I look forward to learning from everyone here and please feel free to offer criticism and advice as I progress throughout my time at Lord of Life.

     - Peter Edwardsen
