Making a Difference...

Way back in the beginning of the month, on February 1st as a matter of fact, a number of youth from both Lord of Life (LOL) and Bridge of Peace (BOP) in Camden came together for what has become a tradition among our confirmation age youth. The day has become a wonderful combination of fellowship and service marked by the Chili Cook-off, where several teams of young chefs work with some of our moms, dads, and Confirmation coaches to chop and stir and stew and bake and then get to taste their work for dinner. After a fun-filled afternoon their day together ends with all of the youth sharing their various gifts by helping to lead worship.

Several wonderful things have happened as a result of this day of sharing that have, and continue to have, an impact on not only the youth and adults that participated that day but also to others who will benefit in the future. For Pastor Giselle and several of the youth and adults from Bridge of Peace this event has become a highlight of their program year. It gives them the opportunity to get out of the city and spend some time with people and in a place that they feel both welcomed and safe. For our youth it is an opportunity to simply spend time together as well as to share some of their gifts and talents with others.

In particular this year one of their service projects was to help paint several fence pickets that will be used to decorate the Camden Children's Garden display at the Philadelphia Flower Show being held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center from March 1st through the 9th. The pictures you see here are of some of our youth helping to paint those pickets and the really wonderful end result of their work.

We also managed to raise, including matching funds from Thrivent, over $800 which will be split evenly between the Bridge of Peace Food Pantry and the Lord of Life Family Emergency Fund. These funds will go a long way to helping people in need in both Camden and the Tabernacle/Medford areas. The Food Pantry gift also moves Bridge of Peace a little closer to their goal of raising $10,000 toward expanding the services of their Peace Center which includes not only the pantry but a number of other services including counseling and job placement. There will be a benefit concert at St. Matthew's in Moorestown at 4:00 PM to help raise additional funds. Our New Life Choir will be participating to help the cause.

It's truly the power of God at work in the lives of his disciples here at LOL and at BOP and beyond when something as simple as a Confirmation event can be connected to the wider purpose of caring for and witnessing to the Good News of Jesus Christ in the world in such far reaching ways. I encourage you to consider joining us at the Concert on the 16th and to visit the Flower Show and look for the LOL/BOP fence pickets at the Children's Garden exhibit to experience that for yourselves.

And thank you to all of you who followed the leading of your heart and supported all of this in any way. To quote the fence pickets - "I am the vine. You are the branches. Together our harvest is abundant." Just another example that what we do for Christ matters!

Yours in Christ - Pastor Sue

From Barb Wagner - LOL Council President

Barb Wagner Thank you for giving me the privilege to serve as your Council President. For the past 4 years Scott Glossner has served as your President and did an excellent job. He is definitely a hard act to follow, and l only hope and pray that I can accomplish half of what he did.

I am blessed to have the following folks working along side of me on Council. They are Bill Leach as Vice President, Donna Rudderow as Secretary, as well as Betty Mastrillo, Tracey Gibboni, Tony Eìth, Julie Vorwerk, Janine Yanessa, Paul Homer, Philip Jagiela and Ed Harding.

All these folks are here to help you with any problems or concerns you may have. This is YOUR CHURCH and we pray that you will get involved with all the activities that are offered to you. We always need volunteers in many ministries, and we hope you will prayerfully consider saying yes when you are asked to serve in an area where you are able.

I hope and pray you will all have a Healthy, Happy, and Blessed year ahead.
Blessings to all,  Barb Wagner

Haiti - Post Trip

Haiti 2014 Penny Miller   It's hard to believe that I have just returned from my 6th trip to Haiti. I plan the entire year for my visit and the week just flies by. I am happy to report that the sewing school is expanding. It now has its own building, large enough to hold the students, the machines, a large work table and chairs plus storage for all the fabric and supplies.

I was at the school on Saturday morning as the students arrived. They were punctual, dressed very professionally and eager for the class to begin. They begin each class with prayers and song. Amazing Grace and How Great Thou Art are beautiful in any language. While I was there I showed them how to make backpacks. They were thrilled to see how easy they are to make. The baby slings were another big hit. I am hoping that they will be able to make and sell some of these items. This class will graduate in March. When I was there they were making plans for their celebration.

When the next class begins, the students will be divided according to their skill level. The teacher feels it will be better to have a beginner and advanced class. So she will teach two classes each week. Some students have electric in their homes. We will continue to teach with the treadle machines but are adding electric machines in the curriculum. The school is in Haiti Penny M 2014need of an adjustable dress form. If anyone has one to donate please let me know.   I delivered 16 sewing kits and lesson books to the school for the next class. I also gave the school a computer and printer so they won't have to use the one at the clinic.

Hope Alive Clinic has plans to expand also. I worked with patients one day while I was there and saw my first case of typhoid fever. The clinic is open 5 days a week. They employ a Haitian doctor, nurse, pharmacy worker and a person to handle registrations. It is busy every day but because they are open 5 days instead of 3, more people are seen and they appear healthier. (The clinic also begins its day with prayers and

song.) The expansion plan for the clinic is to add a 20 bed hospital. It is needed in the area as the closest hospital is at least 2 hours away in any direction. Please keep this venture in your prayers.

I thank you all for the love and support you have shown me and the Haitian people. You have helped with food, skirts, little girls dresses, school supplies, and hygiene necessities for children living in orphanages. You have donated fabric, notions, scissors and sewing machines without hesitation. Soon to come will be another project, "Boxes for Boys". More details will follow. Again I thank you for your help!

Youth Praise - Do you play an instrument or like to sing?  Please let Sue know.  We would love to have you share your gifts as part of the Praise Team at 10:00 or any of our services! We're anxious to put together a group for Palm Sunday and Easter.

Kidz Praize - Meeting every Sunday after the 10am worship!  Join us!
The kids did a wonderful job as they joined with the New Life Choir last Sunday for both services.  A special rendition of "Jesus Loves Me" was a special addition to our worship services.  Thank you kids and parents!

Celebration Ringers-Love was our theme, and it was certainly shared as the bell choir led the Vesper services at Medford Leas last Sunday.  Hands were clapping, smiles abounded, and hearts were warmed as we shared our love of God and neighbor together.  Thank you, ringers, spouses, and singers who helped as well!

Singers and Instrumentalists-We're always looking for special music at all of our services, and so it is with Lent and the Easter season.  Please see Rick or Sue if you would like to share your musical gifts as part of the New Life Choir, Praise Team, ensemble, or solo!

"Feed My Starving Children" Messiah Sing-Along

Sunday, March 2, 2014 at 2:00 PM

First Presbyterian Church of Haddonfield

20 Kings Hwy E
Haddonfield, NJ 08033

The Messiah Sing-Along is our major fund-raising event for Feed My Starving Children.  This year we plan to pack 150,000 meals on Saturday, April 12th. $33,000 must be raised to pay for the meals that go to severely malnourished kids and much of that will come from a successful Messiah Sing-Along.

Our first ever Messiah Sing-Along filled the Sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church Haddonfield with 500 joyous voices.  Now imagine the energy we will create with twice as many voices lifted in song.  That's our goal for the 2nd Annual Messiah Sing-Along.

The Messiah Sing-Along will be conducted by the wonderful Paul Bryan, Dean of Students and Faculty at the Curtis Institute of Music. Paul will conduct an orchestra featuring musicians from the Philadelphia Orchestra, Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra, Philly Pops and the Curtis Institute of Music. And some of the area's top Vocal soloists will join us including Perry Brisbon, Rebecca Hoke, Justin Hopkins and Maren Montalbano.   This musical treat will only be complete with you in attendance.  Vocal Scores will be provided. Don't sing?  Just come and hum along.

By attending the Messiah Sing-Along you will be providing 91 meals to severely malnourished kids! Sign up today and invite your friends to come along.  It would be great to post this invitation on Facebook or Twitter.

Can't make it? You can click on "Attend Event" and make a donation instead.

See you on March 2nd!
