A Blessed New Year to all!

YES! It does matter!
So does it matter that on Jan. 26th Lord of Life will hold its annual meeting? Yes, it does matter, because you see it's the only time each year that we set aside to have a formal conversation about essentially "the state of the union", the only time that we ask everyone who is able to be part of a conversation about our spiritual, physical, and emotional health as a community of faith.
This year maybe more than ever since the founding of the congregation it matters because the Council has proposed some fairly significant changes to the by-laws that will impact each and every one of us as we move forward in ministry together. Those changes impact both how the Council is organized and how members will be elected to it.
Since last year's annual meeting the Congregation Council has been working toward coming up with a new way of organizing ourselves that better supports living into the Vision for our future that we completed over a year ago. Many of you may be familiar with our previous ministry areas of Finance, Learning, Property, Service, Stewardship, Witness, and Worship and Music. While this somewhat traditional breakdown of ministry areas served us well for many years, it was becoming cumbersome and ineffective in helping us to bring our new Vision to life.
The result of our work looks a little different than where we've been in the past. It places a greater emphasis on ministry areas as they came to light during our Vision effort. And it looks like this:
Worship and Music as well as Learning remain largely unchanged. Finance and Property are incorporated into a new ministry called Support that also includes staff support, tech management and communication. "We are Family" will allow us to place a greater emphasis on Fellowship, just being a family of faith together. Discipleship emphasizes all the things we do as we do as followers of Jesus, everything from Outreach to Service to Stewardship. All of these are things we have been working with in the past but organized in a new and more effective way. Last but not least is the area of Pastoral Care and Nurturing; an intentional emphasis on a broader approach to providing direct contact, and showing care and concern for all of our members.
Yes, it does matter that we've spent the time to work through all this as we strive to follow the example of Jesus Christ in all that we say and do here at Lord of Life. And it matters that these changes have been prayerfully and thoughtfully proposed with YOU in mind and in helping you to know how much you matter in God's eyes; both because of who you are and because of what God might just be calling you to be and do in the future as part of the community that is Lord of Life.
Yes, it does matter that we are holding our Annual Meeting on Jan. 26th. And because of how much You matter both to God and to us, I sincerely hope you will be part of the conversation of where we are headed together in the future.
May God richly bless you in this New Year!
- In His Service, Pastor Sue

We are very excited for the start of another great year for Senior High Youth Ministry! All high school age students and their friends are welcome to join any of our events at any time, even if they are not a member of Lord of Life. If you ever have any questions, please contact Maureen McMichael (maureen.mcmichael@yahoo.com) or Lauren Blum (lablum26@gmail.com).

The retreat that was originally planned for November has been moved to Saturday, March 15th. We will be leaving church around noon on Saturday then heading to the Harvey Cedars Bible Center on Long Beach Island for an overnight retreat. and returning mid-afternoon on Sunday. The cost is $60 per person attending and that includes dinner Saturday night and brunch Sunday morning. This is an amazing opportunity to put life on "pause" and refocus/refresh your energy, priorities, and faith! Additionally, they have an indoor swimming pool which is always a bonus! If you are interested in attending the retreat, please contact Maureen by January 15th.

Beginning in 2014 the sewing talents within Lord of Life will be channeled to a new ministry. We will be making quilts for Lutheran World Relief. These quilts are distributed worldwide and are used for shelter, warmth, and carrying belongings.
There are specific instructions for these quilts. They will be sewn entirely on a sewing machine and hand tied when complete. We will need people to cut the fabric squares, arrange and pin the squares together, sew them, and finish with hand tying. Anyone is welcome to help.
A meeting will be arranged at the church in January where all details will be explained. Look for more information on the bulletin board in the narthex

Fuller Center - LOL House - Complete (almost)!
|
The dedication of the LOL-Fuller house in Ventnor was held, and the family was able to use this gift during Christmas and the holidays. Thanks to everyone who supported this, both financially and with their time & talent. While the main home is done, the 2 rooms they were living in during construction now need to refurbished with 'sheet rock' applied, and flooring put down, so a few more days to finish that task. Let us know if you'd like to help out!
There are many more homes still affected by Sandy; if you would like to 'get connected' to the Fuller efforts please contact Chuck Bubeck or Neil Brown.

I will be in Haiti January 15 through January 22; earlier than usual. I will be working with the students at the school to show them how to make different items that they may be able to sell. They will learn how to make backpacks, cloth purses with a zippered closure, and baby slings to safely carry their infants. I will be purchasing the needed supplies for these items and taking everything with me. Sources in Haiti are very limited.
While there I will also visit the local orphanages and mend clothing. This has been overlooked in the past and there is a tremendous need to replace buttons on shirts, repair pockets and sleeves, and hem little girls dresses.
I look forward to this trip for many reasons. I enjoy seeing the many friends and co workers I have met over the years. They are such warm, loving, intelligent people who are so grateful for any assistance they receive. I am anxious to see the new building that houses the sewing school. And of course working directly with the students will be enjoyable yet challenging due to the language barrier.
Once again I ask for your prayers, not only for a safe trip but for all the Haitian people. Their struggle for survival continues every day.
- Penny Miller
Thank you!! Thank you!! Thank you!! 1496 items were collected to fill 45 bags for the orphans in Haiti. Please know that these items will make the children extremely happy. All bags have been delivered to Medford and have been shipped to Haiti. Thank you all! - Penny Miller

Thank you, thank you, thank you. It can't be said often enough for all of the donations that showed up in the last month. Body lotion, puzzles, 2014 calendars, stuffed animals, jewelry, purses, sweaters, lotion and perfume sets, nail polish, sunglasses, crayons, children's books.....the list goes on and on. EVERYTHING was made available for the residents in the Christmas Shop to pick gifts for their family members, free of charge. No one went home empty handed or unhappy thanks to your generosity. Keep us in mind when you start to clean out your closets/dressers. We put everything to use.
