Thoughts in Print - from Pastor Sue
I know I will date myself by telling you this, but when I was a kid my older brothers had an electric guitar and a small amplifier that they used to play in their bedroom. And the one song that I remember they played ALL-THE-TIME was "The House of the Rising Sun". That melody had a way of getting in my head and getting stuck there... for hours...
Another thing that I remember from when I was young was that every year around this time many of the area Lutheran congregations would get together for a special service to celebrate Reformation Sunday. Every year a different church would host the service but there would always be a massed choir made up of singers from all of the different churches wearing their different robes, all the pastors would be dressed in their finest for the occasion as well, and there would be a grand procession, and lots of traditional hymn singing to the strong and soaring sounds of a pipe organ and occasionally a few brass or string instruments. One of the favorite hymns of the day was always "A Mighty Fortress"; a Lutheran classic. But often we also sang "Amazing Grace"; another classic, and highly appropriate for the occasion
Who would have ever thought that this year, at a special service to celebrate the Reformation, RefCon III to be exact, two of those songs would come together in a new way. The service was indeed a celebration of the Reformation. But it didn't look or sound much like those of my memory - no massed choir in their finest robes, no great procession, no pipe organ (although there was certainly one in the room), there were lots of pastors, 7 to be exact, but there wasn't a robe in sight. And instead of the organ, there were a bunch of teenagers with guitars and amplifiers. And at one point I heard that song being played, that one that my brothers used to play in their room that wouldn't get out of my head... But within a few seconds I realized something was different about it this time, it was the words they were singing with it, and those words were familiar too, "Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me..."
In that instant I was reminded of why we still need to celebrate the Reformation; why we created RefCon in the first place as an opportunity to revive a seemingly long gone tradition but in a new way. You see Reformation isn't about simply looking back, Martin Luther would come back to haunt us if he thought we were doing that. Reformation is about being re-formed and being transformed, about always being made new through the power of the cross. In that instant at our RefCon celebration for Confirmation youth and their families, 134+ people from 5 Lutheran congregations, most of them under the age of 15, every one heirs of the legacy of the Reformation, and more importantly of the Resurrection, shared a moment of transformation that could never have been imagined when those two songs, one in 1779 and the other in 1964, were written. What a wonderful witness to what it means to be made new, to be transformed, to being re-formed.
The message of the Gospel remains the solid rock on which we stand as people of faith. But the wrapper in which it is delivered can and should change with the times and the needs of the people. I was reminded of that in a really wonderful way at RefCon. I thank God for all of you who shared that experience with me.
Peace - Pastor Sue

The Grace Place is now officially full! What a blessing to know we have done our best to invite children to join in our ministry at Lord of Life. A special "thank-you" goes out to John Welling. He brought the big ladder fire truck to Grace Place on October 24th and not only showed the children how high the ladder can reach but gave a special talk about fire safety while dressing in his fire gear. It was so nice of John to take personal time to do this for us. Both staff and the children really appreciated it. (See picture)On Thursday, Oct. 31st we had the Halloween Parade. We will have photos soon so you can see how our little "angels" look all dressed up! - Jill Glossner |

Fuller Center - "Lord of Life House" Sponsorship Update
|
| Chuck & Bill working on siding for the LOL-Fuller house Oct 30th. |
A lot is getting done at the house, but there is still much more to complete! The insulation, drywall, flashing, spackling, painting are all completed! The siding has a few hours left, and then it is complete. The furnace has been acquired and is being hooked up (just in time for the cold weather!). Now we will be able to start the interior beginning with the kitchen (flooring, cabinets, plumbing, etc.). Things are progressing well - but we'd like to get this family settled as soon as we can. We're currently scheduling Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays for volunteers; typically leaving 8am at the church and around 3:30pm from Ventnor NJ. Carpools are encouraged, but individuals can certainly drive themselves to the site.
If you want to be a part of this effort, please coordinate with Ed Hourihan at 856-988-2089 or e-mail him at ejhourihan@verizon.net |
Thrivent 'Double Direction' Church Campaign |
Please spend a few minutes to help our church ministries at no cost to you. A few minutes on the internet could DOUBLE the donation from your Thrivent account using the Thrivent 'Choice' dollars. These funds are contributions Thrivent makes based on the value of your account. There are no charges or fees to your account for this.
If you direct Choice Dollars® to an enrolled congregation (for example 'Lord of Life' at 'Tabernacle NJ') between Oct. 1 and Nov. 30. Thrivent Financial will double all Choice Dollars directions made during this time or until $15 million has been awarded, whichever comes first. Please note that the direction you make will NOT affect future choice dollars, so it would be prudent to do this periodically.
HOW TO DO THIS: Log into your Thrivent account (LINK HERE) or call 800-THRIVENT (800-847-4836) and say, "Thrivent Choice." Search for "Lord of Life" in "Tabernacle NJ". If you have any questions please contact your Thrivent representative or Bob Sunbury at 609-678-0668 or email to: bob.sunbury@thrivent.com Thanks for taking a few minutes for your church! After November it is too late (for double dollars)! |

A long list of items is needed for the residents in the dementia unit. While you're rummaging in the basement, attic, in the back of closets, or just cleaning out, see if you have any: soft baby dolls, round laundry baskets, different sized balls (different textures are good), Bingo prizes (small trinkets/candy bars), ties, men's handkerchiefs, shoe horns, shaving brushes, shoe shine kits, any kind of ladies' or men's hats, large building blocks, memory games, playing cards, ladies hair accessories (scarves, combs, brushes, pony tail holders, head bands), and old jewelry (especially large beads, necklaces, large clip-on earrings). Any and all contributions are greatly appreciated and may be placed in the Lutheran Care box inside the front door. - Carol Smith |
