From the Desk of Pastor Dave,
Saint Paul writes, "God's various gifts are handed out everywhere; but they all originate in God's Spirit. God's various ministries are carried out everywhere; but they all originate in God's Spirit. God's various expressions of power are in action everywhere; but God himself is behind it all. Each person is given something to do that shows who God is: Everyone gets in on it, everyone benefits." 1 Corinthians 12: 4-7 (The Message)
Brothers and Sisters...
At our most recent Congregational Council meeting, the decision was made to create a new part-time position of "Discipleship Coordinator" to strengthen our ministries by engaging more of our members and friends in the use of their "time and talent" at Lord of Life and beyond. This position is being funded by a generous grant given by friends of our congregation and will initially span a 4 month period. The intention of the gift was to help our church grow in its ability to minister more faithfully and effectively as we "live into the vision" that we have identified for Lord of Life. The purpose of the position is defined as follows.
"This position supports the coordination of support for our shared ministries. This person is responsible for assisting in discipleship / stewardship ministry; to work with new and current members to discern their gifts for ministry, to lead the effort to create and maintain a time and talent database for the congregation, and to support the Pastors, Council members, and ministry team leaders in the recruitment of volunteers. This position is intended to help our members more fully discover their faith through use of their time and talents in the service of God.
The coordinator recruits, assists in training, and works with ministry team leaders and others to schedule volunteers for various ministry needs within the life of the congregation. The volunteers recruited by the coordinator should reflect, whenever possible, the diversity of the membership of the congregation. Basic volunteer ministry categories include a mixture of part day, one-day, short-term, and on-going opportunities."
This position is now available and applicants should contact the church office to schedule an interview with me and one of the members of the Stewardship Team. It is the Congregational Council's intent that this position will help more of the members and friends of LOL move from being "slightly connected to deeply committed" as we work together in God's Kingdom. When we ALL have opportunity to share our gifts, we are much better together than we could ever be separately!
In closing, I want you to know that I chose the quote from the Apostle Paul because I believe he understood that the church is a Spirit fed / Spirit led blend of people who enrich a congregation, community, and world with the diversity of their gifts. Each one of us has something to offer that brings us ever closer to the heart and mind of God...moving us continually from slightly connected to deeply committed for the sake of the Gospel and in the name of the Christ!
Your brother in Christ, Pastor David Jones

Fall Stewardship 'Renewal'
Fall begins our program year, and also is the time when we prepare for 2014 missions and ministries at the church. Our theme, "God's Work-Our Hands," puts it all into perspective. God has called us to this community of faith and offers us the opportunity and challenge to be the loving and caring hands and feet of Jesus through our gifts of time, talent, and treasure.
Thanks to our stewardship team, we have created materials for the Fall Stewardship Renewal. Everything is in a reusable cloth bag (good for shopping trips!) which includes a pictorial look at our ministries over the last few months, your family's year to date sharing statement, the 2014 Estimate of Sharing Card ("EOS"), important information about the "Simply Giving" program, the Fall Thrivent Double Donation program, and other information from our church.
The bags are all available with your family's name on them - and they are labeled so please get the correct bag! Please get your bag by Sunday Oct 20th - We need the EOS information back by Oct 26-27 Reformation Sunday - 'Renewal' weekend. Please prayerfully consider how you can support our ministries and what God has provided for you. If you 'd rather enter your EOS information online, just visit www.lordlife.us for the electronic version. Thank you for participating in this year's Stewardship Renewal! |

Gift Bags for Orphans in Haiti
|
Once again I am overwhelmed at the response to the new project for Haiti. Each week the donations increase and the bags appear. We are blessed to have so many talented women as evidenced by the creativity of the bags. Thank you all so much!
I will return to Haiti in February and ask that you prayerfully consider going along. You will find the landscape in Haiti quite beautiful and the people warm, friendly and appreciative. It will be a life changing trip.
Most people want to know what they will do there to help. The clinic is always in need of volunteers. As people wait to see the doctor, there is an opportunity to pray with them. (Interpreters are provided) If you would like to share a talent with them, the Haitians' are eager to learn. I had a crowd form around me last year as I was knitting. Crocheting and knitting would be something they would love to learn how to do. There is room within the clinic compound for gardening. It would be wonderful if they could grow eggplants, tomatoes, peppers, etc. to share with the community. Men would love to learn about tools and learn to build.
I have received a "wish list" from Madame Rhodes Orphanage. The children are in need of clothes and shoes. The clothes they have need to be repaired. The rooms where they sleep need shelves made to hold their clothes. Their rooms need to be painted and the area where they play needs to be improved. And most importantly is their need to have people play with them. We sang songs with them last year in English and because they recognized the tune, they sang the same song in French. We had a lot of fun.
If you have any questions please don't hesitate to call and talk with me. And thank you again for all your prayers and support.

Reformation Services-October 26th and 27th
We look back at the meaning of the Reformation; but more importantly, we look forward to our continual re-formation as we seek to follow the Word of God in being the people of God. Bishop's Assistant Scott Schantzenbach will be offering a special message at each service! Wear red!

All Saints' Services-November 2nd and 3rd
We celebrate and give thanks for the lives and faith witness of the saints who have gone before us-our members, family, and friends who now "from their labors rest." We also celebrate the many whom we have welcomed into our faith family through baptism over the last year. Praise be to God for all these faithful witnesses!
Kidz Praize is back!
All children age 4-grade 5 are invited to join in as we raise our voices and play our instruments in joyful praise to God! When? Sunday mornings after the 10:00 Prayer, Praise, and Thanksgiving Service. Where? In the sanctuary. How long? Every week for about 20 minutes, starting on October 27th!
Youth Praise!
Join in with the Praise Team with rehearsals at 9:00 on Sunday mornings or talk with Sue or Rick about sharing your gifts as a special offering at any of our services!
Synod Youth Band
Each year, the NJ Synod forms a Synod Youth Band made up of high school-aged youth from around the synod. It is that time again! If you are a young person with musical gifts please consider joining the band. This year the band is especially looking for instrumentalists (guitarists, keyboardists, etc.). Applications are available at: www.njsynod.org/youth. Please contact Rick Krause (3rick@comcast.net) or Band Manager Tara Zigler (tzigler@princeton.edu) with any questions.

The Women's Bible study continues on Wednesday's at 7:30pm. The new study is an in depth look at the life of the apostle Peter.
The book is called Eyewitness to Majesty: Peter, by Mindy Ferguson
It is not necessary to buy a book, but if you would like one the cost is $8.00.
Peter had a personal and intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. The relationship brought Peter to the point of abandoning not only his fish nets for Christ, but all of his ambitions and selfish desires as well. The same relationship that Peter had with Jesus is available to every believer who seeks to know Him as Savior and chooses to make Him Lord of her life as Peter did.
Please consider joining us for this wonderful study, all are welcome!

Fuller Center - "Lord of Life House" Sponsorship Update

Status on "our" house - The drywall is now all completed, the spackling is also done, and we have a new coat of paint on all the inside walls. But there is still a LOT to do to get the family in there!! We have some siding to complete, and lots of inside work, including the kitchen, flooring and heat. Things are progressing well - join us sometime if you are able!! We're currently scheduling Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays for volunteers; typically leaving 8am at the church and around 4pm from Ventnor NJ. Carpools are encouraged, but individuals can certainly drive themselves to the site. If you want to be a part of this effort, please call Ed Hourihan at 856-988-2089 or e-mail him at ejhourihan@verizon.net

Thrivent 'Double Direction' Church Campaign |

Do you want an easy NO COST way to help the church? Spend 5 minutes on the internet and DOUBLE the donation from your Thrivent account with no cost to you! The Thrivent 'Choice' dollars are contributions Thrivent makes based on the value of your account. There are no charges or fees to your account for this.
In addition Thrivent Financial is giving up to $15 million to enrolled churches all over the country through Thrivent Choice®. Be a part of this one-time campaign and you can help your congregation in a big way!
Simply direct Choice Dollars® to an enrolled congregation between Oct. 1 and Nov. 30. Thrivent Financial will double all Choice Dollars directions made during this time or until $15 million has been awarded, whichever comes first.
Please note that the direction you make will NOT affect future choice dollars, so it would be prudent to do this periodically.
HOW TO DO THIS: Log into your Thrivent account (LINK HERE) or call 800-THRIVENT (800-847-4836) and say, "Thrivent Choice." Search for "Lord of Life" in "Tabernacle NJ". If you have any questions please contact your Thrivent representative or Bob Sunbury at 609-678-0668 or email to: bob.sunbury@thrivent.com
Thanks for taking a few minutes for your church! After November it is too late!

Lutheran Care is in need of the old standbys------nail polish, polish remover, and stuffed animals. Also needed are things for the December Gift Shop where residents go shopping, at no expense, to select gifts for their family members. If you're cleaning out the basement, attic, or closets, needed are any gently used stationary items, toiletries, jewelry, purses, toys, holiday items (trays, figurines, candles, etc.), or knick knacks.
