Brothers and Sisters...
Since 1997 we have been commissioning mission teams to serve in various locations locally, regionally, and all around the world. Members and friends of Lord of Life have been sent out in the name of Christ to act as missionaries. Hundreds of people have responded to the call to be servants who are unafraid to "put a face on the grace of God" wherever they find themselves partnering to do ministry. Twice this summer we will commission mission teams. Our Junior High / Middle School team will be traveling to Baltimore, Maryland this July to embody the love of Christ to residents in that city. And our Senior High team is presently engaged in mission work in the New Jersey Delaware Bay Region helping people to see for themselves that this forgotten coast, also struck by Superstorm Sandy, has not been ignored by everyone in our state.
The act of "commissioning" includes several components and is held during one of our worship services. What we say to both missionaries and congregation is important for all members of LOL to hear! As the names of the mission team members are announced by the Mission Trip Coordinators (Jill Glossner for Senior High and Tina Leach for Junior High) they come and stand before the assembled congregation. Then the participants are authorized to serve as missionaries at work sites. What follows are two marvelous readings from scripture about using our gifts to serve others in Christ's name (Please read Romans 12: 6-8 and 1 Peter 4: 8-11!)
Then the team members are asked three questions.
"Will you accept this call to be the hands and feet of Jesus and carry it out in accordance with the Holy Scriptures?"
"Will you be open to the leading of the Holy Spirit as you witness to the love of Christ?"
"Will you be faithful, understanding, and loving to the people among whom you will live and work?"
To each of these questions the response is, "I will, and I ask God to help me."
And then the congregation is asked, "People of God, do you promise to support these sisters and brothers and pray for them and those they will serve in the mission you have place before them?"
To this question members and friends of Lord of Life respond, "We do, and we ask God to help and guide us."
The final prayer that is offered is appropriate for both mission team members and those who may not share in one of this summer's trips but none the less are ministers and missionaries with their own calling to "live into a servant's life" in the name of Jesus.
"Guiding and loving God, go with us, Your servants, members and friends of our Church who seek by our actions to show the world Your love. Protect us, teach us, and support us as we take this next step in our own faith journeys as we become the people You want us to be. Amen."
Summer Blessings,
Your Brother in Christ, Pastor David Jones

Senior High Mission Trip - Jun 23-28, 2013
|
Wow - what a week! The 33 youth and adults did a fantastic job helping to restore damage done by the hurricane Sandy in several areas along the Bay Shore Area. More information on our efforts will be available soon at the church, but thanks to everyone who helped make this trip possible with their prayers, their generous donations, their labor, time, leadership, and sweat!
Thanks to Jill Glossner for the wonderful job she did organizing, planning and 'executing' the trip this week, and also to the adults who were involved to make sure that not only the Senior High youth had a safe and enjoyable experience, but we were able to make a difference in the lives of those in the southern NJ region who were affected by the hurricane. The youth who gave up a week of their vacation to go help is a wonderful statement of the priorities in their lives. Thanks to all the donors who helped make this possible.

The beautiful weather helped make for a GREAT June Day on the 15th for the Auxiliary. Hope that you were able to attend the festivities. The Auxiliary won't meet again until Sept., but during the summer keep handing in those stuffed animals (for b'day bags), candy bars (for Bingo prizes), small knick knacks/toys (for the Christmas Shoppe), and nail polish & remover (for the residents). Keep us in mind as you clean through closets this summer as we are great at recycling and can find a use for almost anything. The Lutheran Care box at church is large enough to hold whatever goodies you might find in your closets ;-)
