Thoughts in Print - from Pastor Sue
|
Have you noticed? The pictures? You know... the ones on the bulletin board on the right as you pass through the entryway at church! The same ones that we showed before the services last weekend. What a cool bunch 'o kids! In case you hadn't noticed, these pictures are of our 2013 Confirmation Class. 20 young people who have completed 3 years of learning and serving and celebrating. They are now full "adult" members of Lord of Life. But what does that mean, really? What does it mean to be an adult much less a member of Lord of Life?
Well, I suppose we could start with the fact that all of them will be able to vote on whether or not Pastor Sue stays on as one of your Pastors when that takes place early this fall. I wonder if they will take the opportunity as adult members of Lord of Life to participate in that important day in our life together. I certainly hope they will. But I don't know. Anymore than I know whether or not many of our other adult members will take that opportunity. And I wonder if they'll be able to maneuver all the demands on their time and energy in order to make the time to continue their growth as people of faith, as disciples, and to participate in learning and serving and celebrating and being in relationship with a God who loves them deeply. I wonder if they'll choose to make the time. Now that they're adults...
Confirmation ministry is about helping our young people and their families to understand and appreciate the foundational beliefs we have as Lutheran Christians, to develop a healthy sense of what it means to be part of a faith community, and most important of all, to help them to know the Savior, Jesus, who lived and died and rose again for them. It's about relationship; a personal relationship. And it starts with all of us pastors, parents, coaches, and community, sharing our faith and witnessing to what our relationship with Jesus and through him, to each other, means to us.
Over the last couple of years we've asked our Confirmation youth to select a bible passage and make a statement of faith. And each and every year they have come up with statements that have been profound and meaningful and important, not only to them, but to all of the rest of us who have read them as well. I wonder... What would the rest of us pick for a bible verse if we were asked? And what would we write down to share publically with the entire LOL community about that passage and what faith in Jesus Christ means to us? I encourage all of you to take a look at these statements. We've published them in a booklet that each and everyone can take a look at and benefit from. I encourage you to take a look and use them in your own devotional life. And maybe to inspire you to think about taking the time to create a statement of your own.
You know, being an "adult" is a rather subjective term. Generally it refers to someone who is considered "mature". And with maturity generally comes both new freedoms and new responsibilities. I'm comfortable that all 20 of the young people in our Confirmation Class have a pretty good handle on their faith; on who this person Jesus is to and for them. I'm comfortable allowing them more fully into our community of faith with all the new freedoms and responsibilities that come with it. And I pray that they, and we, will always desire to, and choose to, learn and serve and celebrate in relationship with Jesus Christ and each other. At the end of the day, isn't that what being an adult and a member are all about?
Peace - PJ2

A GREAT BIG THANK YOU goes out to our dedicated Sunday School teachers, coordinators, and helpers for another great year working with our children! I look forward to a new year in the fall. Blessings on a safe and happy summer and get some rest! Thank you all!
In the meantime, our one-room SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL has already begun. This weekend Sue Dreisbach will be working with our youngsters on learning through music and song. And we're in need of teachers for the remainder of the summer. If you have an interest in assisting with Summer SundaySchool please contact Pastor Sue or Marie Lamb at the church.

Fund Raising for Atlantic City Home
|
Lu and I want to thank all who participated in the LOL Fuller Center Home sponsorship fund raisers (Dine and Donate, Doughnut sale, and Pasta dinner. A special thanks to Sloppy and the Joe's for donating their time and talent to the cause. Everyone loved the music! We raised approximately $3000 total and will be applying for Thrivent matching funds. Unfortunately, Thrivent has had a high demand for matching funds from other church fund raising requests, and we will likely get about $500 in lieu of the hoped for $1000. Even so, I am confident this will be sufficient for LOL to sponsor a house. Once we get the funds in place and a house designated, we will be looking for happy volunteers to begin working to restore the home back to a decent livable condition. Thank you all very much! - Ed Hourihan

Hope Alive Clinic in Mariani is doing well. There is a doctor at the clinic every day to see patients. The pharmacy is open daily for prescription refills of medications, creams and ointments. People still come from miles away to see a doctor. And American physicians continue to visit throughout the year.
There is now a dormitory for men and for women with eight to ten single beds in each. The units are air conditioned and have floor fans. Mosquito netting is above every bed and there is an indoor bathroom with shower in each. The accommodations are not 5 star but have greatly improved since my first trip to Haiti.
The menu has been "Americanized" slightly to make visitors feel more at home, but the women also make traditional Haitian dishes.
The clinic is now addressing the issue of dental care. They would like to dedicate a room upstairs in the clinic as a dental office. Visiting dentists from the United States would be able to work as well as the Haitian dentists. The only problem is the room is filled with fabric and sewing supplies. The clinic needs space to grow to fulfill its ministry in Haiti.
I met with two members of the board of directors where we discussed various options. We came to the conclusion that it is time for the sewing project to move to its own building and become a school. "Penny Miller's Sewing Academy" will open in its own building August 2013.
Libertin, my administrator, has been doing a great job getting estimates, negotiating prices, making purchases and keeping me informed. He found a 5 room house for rent a short walk from the clinic. My employer, Preferred Home Health Care, has offered monetary assistance for renting this house. Libertin is currently in pursuit of tables and chairs and some strong friends to move the sewing machines to the new location.
This has been a remarkable journey. I have been overwhelmed at times trying to have everything fall into place. I never thought this sewing project would evolve into a school. God has a plan for this school and I pray He will continue to direct it to where He wants it to be. Thank you all for your support and prayers over the last 5 years. It is a comfort knowing that I am not doing this alone.

The Junior High mission trip is scheduled Sun July 14 thru Wed July 17th. We will be traveling to Baltimore, Maryland. We will be learning at the Lutheran World Relief Organization, getting a tour of the Basilica of Baltimore, and wherever we are serving. We will be serving in a place called Paul's Place - which is why we are collecting things for the hygiene kits - we still need more travel sized things. Thanks to whomever has donated so far!
We are also serving at First Fruit's Farm, The Samaritan Women, Amazing Grace food pantry, Christ Lutheran church - the church hosting us, and finally at Jerusalem Mill. We will be having fun at Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum at the Inner Harbor and Jerusalem Mill on the way down. There are 18 of us going, 8 adults and 10 kids. Tina Leach is the coordinator for the trip, and Pastor Sue is our spiritual leader. The theme this year is all about hunger and the less fortunate.
How you can help!
We would like to ask the congregation to donate various items for Paul's Place such as:
- First Aid Kit supplies (e.g. Band-Aids, antibiotic packets, 2x2" gauze)
- Hygiene Kit supplies (e.g. shampoo, lotion, toothpaste, double edged razors)
- Foot Kit supplies (white socks, moleskin, gauze tape, etc.)
- Oral Kit (oral gel, floss picks, Sensodyne toothpaste, etc.)
Look for the box in the narthex in which to put the collections.
You can download, view or print-out the list at this link ( .pdf file ):

All are welcome to our last Bible Study focusing on the book, "One Month To Live" by Kerry and Chris Shook. Join us on Wednesday, June 19th, at 7:30. "None of us knows how much time we have--thirty minutes, thirty days, thirty years. But when we are living passionate, obedient lives--full of love for God and others--it really doesn't matter." We don't get to decide the dates on our gravestone. Only God knows. Our lives are in His hands. We get to decide how we're going to use the dash between the two dates. What are you spending yours on? Are you living the dash, knowing fully who you are and why you're here? Or dashing to live, hurriedly spending precious time chasing things that really don't matter to you? God wants us to realize that our time on earth is limited so we will spend it wisely. Come and see how you can change your life in 30 days to reflect a Christ centered life. |
Calling all book lovers.
Come join us for stimulating discussions, fellowship and of course, dessert! Need a ride? Please leave a message in the church office.
Last Book for the spring, June 18, 7pm: "This I Remember" the superb autobiography by Eleanor Roosevelt.
