THOUGHTS IN PRINT - Pastor Sue
|
According to one definition, a BISHOP (English derivation from the New Testament Greek ἐπίσκοπος, epískopos, "overseer", "guardian") is an ordained or consecrated member of the Christian clergy who is generally entrusted with a position of authority and oversight. In the ELCA a BISHOP has both a pastoral and an administrative role. The ELCA web page for the Conference of Bishops says, "Each of the 65 synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America elects a bishop to serve as the synod's chief pastor and to exercise administrative oversight of the synod's work." The Bishop of the NJ Synod is Rev. E. Roy Riley. A presiding bishop also serves in a similar capacity for the entire ELCA and is elected at the Churchwide Assembly. The current Presiding Bishop is the Rev. Mark S. Hanson.
This year, for the first time in 22 years, we will be electing a new Bishop here at the Synod Assembly to be held in early June. It will be hard to say good bye to Bishop Riley and his style of ministry. The Bishop and those who work on the staff in the Synod office provide pastoral care and support in a variety of ways for all of the pastors and congregations in the state. They also help to provide a sense of vision for the ministry of the wider church in a state with a very diverse population and landscape. And last, but not least, they manage the business of the synod including property, finances, and statewide program ministry.
One of the things I've learned from Bishop Riley in the time that I've known and worked with him is that the office of Bishop MUST be a balance of Pastor and Chief Administrator. That with such a breadth and depth of responsibilities, it is important to remember that we do what we do as followers of Jesus Christ; that first and foremost we are people who have received the grace and forgiveness of a loving God and that what we say and do on every level needs to be flavored by that reality. His example has greatly influenced how I am living into my calling as a pastor and especially here at Lord of Life.
The Office of Bishop is both a challenging and rewarding role. Any ordained pastor in the ELCA is eligible for nomination at the Assembly, and it will take several votes before we have determined the one person who will fill this role for us for at least the next 6 years. It will be a challenge for those of us attending the Assembly to prayerfully consider who that person should be. I would ask for your prayers for Pastor Jones, me, and the voting members who will be attending from LOL as we more fully enter into this process over the next several weeks. And I would encourage you to spend some time looking at some of the information available on both the NJ Synod www.njsynod.org and ELCA (www.elca.org) web pages so you have a better understanding of who we are as a wider church in NJ, the US, and the world.
- Peace, Pastor Sue

Update on the fund LOL Fuller Center
Atlantic City - Home Sponsorship fund-raising
|

Our first event is was the Dine-and-Donate night at PJ Whelihans on April 15th which was a great success. We'll know in about a week the final tally results, but Lu and I noted people coming through the door up until 8PM! We may do another dine and donate event. Thank you to all who came out and dined at PJ's! Also, you may be able to buy a box and donate it (we'll deliver) to a benevolent organization. We're working out the details so stay tuned.
Our next fund raiser will be a Krispy Kreme Donut sale on Sunday May 5th after both services. There is a signup sheet in the Narthex, so please sign up if interested. The price (same as the store) will be $7 per dozen, but we will gratefully accept larger donations ;-)
The date for the Spaghetti Dinner date has been approved by Council and is Friday May 31 so mark your calendars! Not only will delicious food be served, but Sloppy and the Joe's (the WHOLE band!!) have agreed to play. Come see 3/4 quarters of the Praise band kick it up a few notches from what you are used to hearing at the 10 AM service! Entertainment will begin 6:30- 7ish. Oh, and during intermissions there will be open mic opportunities to play an instrument, tell a few clean 'Sven and Ollie' jokes, or share whatever hidden talent you may have! If interested contact Ed or Lu Hourihan. We'll need some volunteers to help setup, cook, serve, and clean up. Some have already contacted us, but we are in need of more. Please contact Lu at luciah13@verizon.net
Finally we did get approved for a portions of the Thrivent matching dollars. We are on our way to the $4000 Lord of Life home sponsorship. Once we have the funds (hopefully by mid-June) we will make the contribution, have a home assigned to LOL, and we can begin serving a family in Atlantic City in getting their home restored.
Please keep our volunteers in your prayers as they participate in the Fuller Center Legacy Build in Atlantic City April 28 thru May 3.

One of the places that the Jr. High mission trip will be serving is a place called Paul's Place.
We would like to ask the congregation to donate various items such as:
- First Aid Kit supplies (e.g. Band-Aids, antibiotic packets, 2x2" gauze)
- Hygiene Kit supplies (e.g. shampoo, lotion, toothpaste, double edged razors)
- Foot Kit supplies (white socks, moleskin, gauze tape, etc.)
- Oral Kit (oral gel, floss picks, sensodyne toothpaste, etc.)
We have a few months, so hopefully we can get a few of these items. Tina Leach will provide a box for the narthex in which to put the collections.

I would like to thank you for keeping me and the Hope Alive team in your thoughts and prayers during my recent trip.
I spent time each day seeing patients, which I am happy to report appear to be healthier than in the past. We visited 2 orphanages where we spent time with over 50 children (19 at one & 32 at the other). Each girl received 2 dresses and were very happy with them. All children got new toothbrushes, matchbox cars, jumpropes, candy, bracelets and soccer balls were left for each group. We sang songs and taught them the Hokey Pokey. While at the orphanage we attempted to mend their clothes. We had a time limit for our visit and did not accomplish as much as I had hoped. There is a tremendous need for repairing clothing.
The highlight of the trip this year was the graduation from the sewing program. Eleven women graduated. These women devoted 5-6 hours every Saturday for the past year to learn the trade of sewing. They will now be able to earn a living and support themselves and their families. Each graduate received a certificate, a necklace, a monetary gift and of course a treadle sewing machine. It was a special day for them and an emotional one for me. I am very proud of these women for accepting the challenge to try something new. This program and the sewing machine will move their life in a new direction. They were extremely happy and very grateful. The graduates wore something they made and were allowed to invite their families and friends to the ceremony. Refreshments were served, pictures were taken, and there were smiles everywhere.
I also met with 13 new students that have already begun the sewing classes. The program will continue as last year. The administrator and the teacher will earn a salary each week. And because there is such a need for mending at the orphanages, the studients will be required to go there and help with this. It will be part of their cirriculum. This way they can pay it forward.
Again I thank you for your support. Lord of Life is helping to make a difference in Haiti.

About the Memorial Garden |
Were you aware that Lord of Life has a Memorial Garden?? This garden is located at the end of the Meditation Walk and has been set aside as a committal place for cremains. Significant changes in burial customs in which cremation has gained far wider acceptance, together with the high cost of funerals and cemetery plots, has led us to offer this alternative means of burial to our church family.
This service is available for members of the church and their immediate families. There will be a stone marker on each plot with name and appropriate dates. The cost of each plot is $300 (the stone marker is separate). There are benches in the garden for those desiring to visit, pause, and meditate.
Take a walk to the gardens at any time to familiarize yourself with this beautiful resting place for loved ones.
To make arrangements for our beautiful gardens or for more information please contact Barbara Wagner 609-859-0404.

PEP "Art in Bloom" Review
Our afternoon started off with a colorful meal provided by everyone who came and blossomed into a very special time of painting. While most of us felt a bit tentative about putting brush to paper, our artists Karen Shields and Mary Stroup lovingly guided and encouraged us to let our creativity flow; and flow it did. As the classical music played in the background, we each relaxed and created our own unique visions of our flower centerpieces. Watch for them within the next week as they are mounted and displayed in our narthex. A very big Thanks! to Karen and Mary and all of our kitchen and food helpers.
