Thoughts in Print ...by Pastor Sue

As I write this to all of you the clock is inevitably ticking its way toward the end of Lent. It's hard to believe that Palm Sunday is already upon us and the remainder of Holy Week is beckoning. How will you celebrate these days of Holy Week? My hope and prayer is that all of you will find ways to engage in the journey... the final journey of Jesus from his triumphal entry into Jerusalem... to his arrest and trial, torture, and death on the cross... to the grave... and beyond! A journey taken for no other reason than to show us how much God loves us; the lengths to which God is willing to go to be in relationship with us and to reconcile us to himself. I hope you will join your fellow travelers here at Lord of Life on this journey at as many of the amazing and varied opportunities for worship this next week as well. And I hope you will invite family and friends to journey with us as well.

As we prepare our hearts and minds for this last and most important week of our Lenten journey, I'd like to share with you an article, a devotion really, written by the Rev. Dr. David Lose - Marbury E. Anderson Chair in Biblical Preaching at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN and former pastor of Price of Peace Lutheran Church in Princeton Junction, NJ. I encourage you to read it in preparation for where we are all headed together this next week paying particular attention to the sections I have highlighted in bold print. They are the essence of what we remember, what we celebrate, this next week and forever more. Peace! - PJ2

Luke 23:34a  - Posted: 18 Mar 2013 07:49 AM PDT

[Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing."]   A bible verse shown in brackets in many bibles.

Just to refresh our memory: brackets indicate that a particular verse or even set of verses are not found in the earliest fragments of the gospel that we have, but were contained in later and more complete manuscripts. This doesn't mean that the verse in question wasn't of Luke's original composition, just that it seems a little more likely that it was an early addition. In this case, for instance, you could skip over this verse and never miss a beat. We don't know for sure - hence the verse is there, but with brackets to describe it's distinct history.

In this case, it's easy to understand why this verse was included. It is, after all, one of the seven last words Jesus utters from the cross. Moreover, it's one of the most beloved and certainly most gracious of those seven words, as Jesus prays for forgiveness for those who are in the midst of crucifying him, ridiculing him, or abandoning them, saying that they do not know that they are doing.

And whatever the history of this verse, this much, at least, is certain: they surely do not know they are crucifying the Lord of glory. They do not know they are ridiculing the Son of God. And even his disciples, whatever their profession of faith earlier, in this moment demonstrate that they do not know Jesus is the savior of the world or they would not have betrayed, denied, and abandoned him.

So that is the first element of truth in this verse: that humanity is so confused, so inexplicably unable to see Gods' work in and amongst our own activities, that we would put the Son of God to death. But it is only the first.

The second truth Jesus' statement reveals is that God responds to our limitation, failing, and sin not with judgment but with mercy, with compassion, with forgiveness.

Jesus has forgiven throughout his ministry, at points - as when he heals the man lowered through the roof by friends - at what seems like the oddest of times. Yet that seems to be at the center of what he has come to do - offer God's forgiveness to any and all. And so now he forgives again.

And that should tell us something very important: the cross does not make forgiveness possible, it reveals that God is essentially and irrefutably a God of forgiveness.

Some theories about the cross stress that Jesus had to be punished in our place - that Jesus' gruesome death somehow paid the debt of justice and honor owed God because of human sin - before God could respond to us in love and forgiveness. If that were true, why would Jesus forgive so freely during his ministry before his cross? If that were true, why would Jesus forgive now, from the cross?

God forgives. God chooses, that is, to repair our broken relationship by love rather than justice. Justice has its place - and an important one at that - but it does not repair broken relationships.
Only love can do that. And so Jesus now offers forgiveness just as has done throughout his ministry. Because that's not just what Jesus does, it's what God is: mercy, compassion, love...in a word, forgiveness. Which is what makes this verse not just important, or even a valuable part of the tradition, but also and undeniably true.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you. Thank you for telling us the truth about ourselves, and thank you for telling us the truth about you and your response to us. Let us share these two truths with all we meet in wonder and gratitude. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Fuller Center Build '13 at Atlantic City

Fuller 2013 Legacy Build

 MAKING A DIFFERENCE!

Hey LOL family great news! The Council has approved a request for the congregation to sponsor a home that was devastated by Hurricane Sandy to be restored. What's that mean you say? Although FEMA is providing some monetary assistance, it has been estimated that each home will have an average of $3600 of unmet needs for materials.  That's were LOL home sponsorship comes in.  Knowing that faith without  works is dead (I think I've heard that in a few sermons....) this an exciting opportunity for the congregation to get involved with not only fund raising to sponsor a house, but also to have a dedicated home for LOL volunteers restore and help with a specific families' recovery. You'll be hearing more about the fund raising efforts soon, but some possible ideas are: a coffee house, a Dine-and-Donate night at PJ Whelihans, a Krispy Kreme doughnut sale, and a spaghetti dinner just to name a few.  We'll need volunteers to help coordinate these events so we hope you'll prayerfully consider what time and talent you can provide. Lu Hourihan is coordinating fund raising so contact her if you're interested in helping with any of those events at luciah13@verizon.net .

Also, this is a reminder that this year's week long Fuller Center Legacy Build in Atlantic City is hosted by our local chapter (Fuller Center of the NJ Pines) April 28-May 3.  Volunteers are needed to assist with the rebuilding process. You don't need to be a skilled craftsman; all you need is a caring heart and a will to help those who need a hand up. You can volunteer for 1-5 days; whatever fits your schedule!  Pastor David Jones as well as a few other LOL members will be attending for the full week! A carpool is forming for those not wishing to stay overnight during the week, or needing to get back for work or other events.    Volunteer housing is available at no charge for those registering, whether for one night or all 5. Please visit the link below (this one works) and you will find answers to most questions. If you have additional questions feel free to call me (Ed Hourihan) at 856-988-2089, or e-mail at  ejhourihan@verizon.net.  See you in AC!

Benefit for Charity

Fundraising Music Event - Six members of New Life Choir (9 total from Lord of Life) attended a Messiah sing-a-long at the First Presbyterian Church in Haddonfield on March 3rd.  The concert benefited "Feed My Starving Children", a Christian non-profit organization committed to providing nutritious meals to underprivileged children all over the world.  The 400-voice volunteer choir was led by a 40-member orchestra composed of members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Philly Pops and The Curtis Institute of Music Symphony Orchestra.  All proceeds from the event (and other fundraising opportunities) will go to hand-packing rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and vitamins which will then be shipped to developing nations. At only 22-cents per meal, they are hoping to raise a total of $20,000 before the campaign ends in early April.  Their website is here:  http://www.fmsc.org/

Invite your friends, colleagues and fellow church women to share this day.

Martin Luther said:

"This life, therefore, is not godliness but the process of becoming godly, not health but getting well, not being but becoming, not rest but exercise. We are not now what we shall be, but we are on the way. The process is not yet finished, but it is actively going on. This is not the goal but it is the right road. At present, everything does not gleam and sparkle, but everything is being cleansed."

Women of all faith traditions are invited and welcomed! Bring a friend or two who needs a day of rest, refreshment, and renewal!    Registration deadline: Monday, April 8, 2013

Stewardship Update

Stewardship Info
Next meeting Apr 16th (Tue) at 7pm.  We will be working our list of 2013 priorities, and we are seeking people to help on one (or more!) of our efforts this year.  Our 2013 Plan includes the following components:   Fall Emphasis, Engaging Time/Talent,  Environment 'Green Team', Endowment, Communications & Long Range Priorities.  We need people to help with 1, 2 or all of these, whatever your time will allow.
If you are interested in helping with any of our 2013 Stewardship plans, please contact Pastor Dave or Bill Dreisbach or "lordlife@gmail.com" -  or come to the next meeting at the Church.

Financial Status
The church continues to be on a 'rocky start' for 2013 financially, and we would again encourage everyone to ensure they are current (or above) their estimate of sharing.  The latest numbers show 17% under our plan which is tough to recover from during the lean summer months.  Please consider using 'simply giving' (form linked below) and to keep our church finance team, church council, and everyone working these difficult issues in your prayers.
