Thoughts in Print - by Pastor Sue
|
This last Monday Pastor Dave, Jill Glossner and I took a little ride... a little ride that turned into an all day excursion. Our mission - spending the day with Pastor Gary Stigler and looking into the area along the Delaware Bay in NJ where we'll be serving this summer with our Senior High Youth helping with the Superstorm Sandy relief effort. I have to admit that this is an area of the state I really didn't know too much about until Monday.
It's an area largely forgotten by the otherwise massive attention to the storm damage in NJ, almost all of which has been directed along the Atlantic Shore. I suppose it's only natural. Most of us have at least a passing acquaintance with many of the areas along the shore, especially places like Atlantic City and Long Beach Island. Many of us even know people who live there, have retired there, or have vacation homes there. But I suspect most of you are like me and have little knowledge of Bay towns like Bivalve and Fortescue and Grandy's Beach; areas rich in the history of the shellfish industry not only in NJ but even nationwide and around the world.
It's an area not nearly as populated or as popular as the Atlantic shore, but it is an area where we witnessed significant devastation wrought by Sandy and the wonderful work that local churches and even the folks at Redeemer in Vineland through the leadership of Pastor Gary are doing to provide comfort and support to those challenged to find the resources to recover. I came away from that experience with a real conviction that we need to be there. That we need to bring our youth and adults, and their gifts and abilities, to the Delaware Bay so that we can not only be a blessing, but that those we come in contact with along the way can also be a blessing to us.
Many of you have already responded in wonderful ways in supporting the work of recovery around the state. Donations of cleaning supplies, food, clothing, money, and time have been gratefully accepted by the many organizations and individuals who have received help through your generosity. And there will be many more opportunities to come. The Fuller Center folks are busy at work in Atlantic City with many of the residents of that area who lack appropriate resources to manage their own recovery. You will be hearing more [article below] about how the members of Lord of Life can be involved in this work. We'll also be involved throughout the remainder of the Lenten season in gathering offerings for two of the congregations in NJ that were displaced by the storm; Faith in Lavallette, and Holy Trinity in Brant Beach.
In the gospel lesson this weekend, Jesus describes himself as a mother hen who desires to gather his people, all of us included, under his wings, but that often the people, including us, aren't willing. I wonder... My friends, I truly believe that God is calling us to help gather... to help gather those who feel devastated, helpless, and alone, under the wings of love and care and protection that Jesus offers to all people. Wherever you feel called to join in these efforts, may you be richly blessed in your giving and service. And may God richly bless all of us at Lord of Life as we continue to answer God's call to share the good news and to serve.

Fuller Center at Atlantic City
|
If you've been around Lord of Life, even for a little while, I'm sure you've heard about our rich history of reaching out to help those in need via our Mission Trips. Adults, Senior High, and Youth have been actively putting their faith into works and helping communities up and down the east coast, locally in Tabernacle, and even as far west as Cleveland, Ohio. The aftermath of Hurricane Sandy has left many people along the New Jersey shore in need of assistance. That's where the Fuller Center in the New Jersey Pines (FCNJP) is stepping in to assist with people who need a hand up; not a hand out. In Atlantic City many homes were flooded. I was there a week after the storm and driving around you could not see exterior damage, but the piles of furniture and possessions piled curbside, indicating clearly that many low lying areas, far from the beaches, were affected. The affected homes had no flood insurance and the communities are in impoverished areas. FEMA provides some assistance, but not enough to restore homes to a safe level of living.
So you're wondering how you can help? The FCNJP was selected by Fuller Center International, to host this year's Fuller Center Legacy Build in Atlantic City. The current focus is a one week focused effort (April 28-May 3) to honor the legacy of Millard Fuller, who with his wife started Habitat for Humanity and then the Fuller Center. Volunteers are needed to assist with the rebuilding process. You don't need to be a skilled craftsman, all you need is a caring heart and a will to help those who need a hand up. You can volunteer for a day, 2, 3, 4 or all 5. Whatever fits your schedule! Just visit the link below and you will find answers to most questions. You can click the 'Register Now' link to see the various registration options available. If you have questions feel free to call me (Ed Hourihan) at 856-988-2089, or e-mail at ejhourihan@verizon.net.
