Thoughts in Print - Pastor Sue
|
This last Monday morning, 65 Confirmation youth and adult leaders and guests from four different Lutheran congregations - Lord of Life, St. Paul's in Hainesport, Bridge of Peace in Camden, and Ascension in Haddon Heights - gathered at Congregation Beth Tikvah in Marlton for a program facilitated by Rabbi Gary Gans. Our mission: to learn about our brothers and sisters of the Jewish faith and to think about the marvelous heritage we share as well as where we differ in our practices and beliefs. All of this was part of our Martin Luther King Jr. day retreat and we were very blessed to have some of our adult members join us for the morning program as well as a few additional folks who stayed with us for the rest of the day as we traveled to Bridge of Peace in Camden for a shared lunch and some service work.
One of the highlights of the morning program was when we were able to go forward in small groups and see the Torah Scroll, the large scroll of scripture that represents what we call the first five books of the Old Testament - Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. The scrolls are written in Hebrew, and Hebrew is read from right to left instead of left to right as we're familiar with. Not only that, the original Hebrew text contains no vowels as we know them, only consonants, all of which makes the reading of it that much more complicated.
All of us were fascinated with the scroll and the language and the traditions around its reading and we greatly admired those who have learned to read from the scroll, a rite of passage for youth participating in their bat (for girls) or bar (for boys) mitzvah. And I think all of us learned a new appreciation for our own scripture - a combination of both the Hebrew scriptures found in what we call the Old Testament, and the Christian scriptures found in the New Testament - through learning about the deep reverence the folks at Beth Tikvah have for theirs.
Our Old Testament lesson for this weekend - Nehemiah 8:1-3,5-6,8-10 speaks to us of a time when the Hebrew people were returning from exile in Babylon to Jerusalem and were finally finding themselves free to hear the scriptures read after years of not being able to gather, worship, or share the word of God. The passage tells us that the people wept when they heard the words of the law and that Nehemiah tells them not to weep but to rejoice.
Here at Lord of Life we have many opportunities to freely gather to hear the word of God - we hear the word read and preached during worship, we have many opportunities for learning for both young people and adults throughout the week, and we even provide devotional resources for all of you to study on your own at home. Have you taken advantage of one or more of these opportunities lately? If not, or if you regularly participate in one but not another, consider adding another opportunity to your normal routine.
I have to wonder if many of us would be more inclined to take advantage of these opportunities if we knew that somehow the ability to do so, to gather and to worship and share the word of God openly, could or would be taken away?
It is truly a privilege to be able to experience the scriptures in all their richness in so many ways here at Lord of Life. I hope and pray all of you will take advantage of these opportunities in new and wonderful ways in this new year. What have you got to lose!

MEN'S / WOMEN'S FELLOWSHIP DINNER - Jan 29 Tue 6pm
|
CALLING ALL MEN OF FAITH and WOMEN OF FAITH TOO!
This is your invitation to join us this Tuesday, January 29 from 6 PM to 7:30 PM at Ott's Tavern in Medford (located on Stokes Road next to Murphy's Market) for a Men's Ministry sponsored dinner. We will gather together in our own room and order off the menu (Soup, salad, sandwich or entree...it's your choice!).
Our presenter this evening will be Pastor David Auterson. David has served for over 25 years as an Assembly of God pastor (most recently in Bridgeton, New Jersey) and has joined the ranks of Thrivent financial consultants working alongside our own Bob Sunbury in the last few months. For many of us this will be the first opportunity to speak with a leader in the Pentecostal church and should provide us with great opportunity for conversation and reflection.
Our dinner is open to all men and women at LOL and friends. Our discussions are lively and faith-filled...closing with prayers for speaker and remembering the needs of the whole congregation as well. So even if you have not joined us before, please know you are welcome! You can call me (609-707-6575) for further info or E-mail LOL at www.lordlife.us. Sign-ups are not necessary. Just show up and we will make room for you at the table! Hope to see you Tuesday evening!

Free will donations will be accepted starting this weekend for our 3rd Annual Chili Cook Off. Two areas will be designated for the Baltimore Ravens or San Francisco 49ers. Donations can be placed in the area for the team you would like to win the Super Bowl. Proceeds benefit the Seneca Food Pantry, the Shawnee Food Pantry & Lord of Life's Junior & Senior High Mission Trip Fund. Not the NFL. Partial matching funds will be provided by Thrivent.
On January 21, over 40 youth & adults attended our MLK Retreat to Beth Tikvah Synagogue in Marlton and Bridge of Peace in Camden. The kids made us proud by their attention to the Rabbi and their hard work at Bridge of Peace. It was a very successful day!

Slices of Life -
When you determine how the time in your life is "sliced up" - make sure you have balance. Time for family, time for work, time for fun, time for worship... and time for 'giving back' too. There are plenty of volunteer opportunities both in the church and outside. We all get 168 hours per week - but how you choose to use yours is your decision. Please get involved - a few hours can help enrich your life as well as others!
|
Some interesting things going on that you will get to see as you come to church! (Many things we do are 'invisible' - changing light bulbs, fixing door latches, rewiring the phone system, etc...) But here are 2 items you will notice:
1) Solar Panels Update: The Lord of Life solar installation is just about ready to begin. Lots of effort has been ongoing behind the scene to file and get approvals with the various agencies involved. All permits and applications have been received and equipment ordered. Below is a summary of next steps: - We expect layout and flashings installation (for rack installation) to begin shortly (weather permitting). After flashing installation on the roof, the rails will be mounted.
- Major equipment: Panels and inverters are expected to be delivered early in Feb.
- Panel and inverter installation will be started (weather permitting) as soon as racking installation is complete and inspected by the township.
We will have a temporary storage trailer placed in the parking lot Feb 4th for a couple of weeks, that should be gone by the end of Feb (subject to weather and inspections). 2) Lord of Life New Sign Update: The 'footer' of concrete, bolts and conduit has been poured before the cold set in, and is ready to move the sign. The sign is safely 'winterized' and stored in our parking lot. The wireless equipment has been installed (to communicate to the sign) and ready for final configuration once the sign is powered up. We need to coordinate the sign move to its final location, and the electrical hookup still.
