Brothers and Sisters...
In preparing to experience this Advent season with you, I've been reading a variety of articles that have helped me more clearly focus on the reason for this blue, penitential, four week long, "Is it CHRISTmas yet?", time of the church year. An article written by a very new pastor in the New Jersey Synod serving Saint Stephen Evangelical Lutheran Church in South Plainfield caught my attention. As Christopher Lee Halverson prepares for this Advent as a very recently ordained shepherd, he raises some important issues for his flock and us too! Let me share his insights.
"Advent is one of those odd seasons - it sort of feels like Lent being mugged by Baby Jesus. As in Lent we await the coming of Jesus, as in Lent we reflect and prepare, we even decorate the church in similar colors (Blue in Advent, Purple in Lent). The main difference is where we are looking for Jesus to come from - in Lent we await his coming out of the tomb, in Advent his coming is out of the womb. We prepare ourselves for Christmas.
Now, it's kind of a strange thing, to prepare ourselves for Christmas, especially since society at large has been preparing us for Christmas since the day after Halloween. We of course prepare by lighting candles, opening chocolate laden Advent calendars day by chocolaty day, giving additional offerings to the church, and setting up our nativity sets. Yet, what do our church Advent practices have to say about our secular Christmas preparations?
According to one group - The Advent Conspiracy - a faithful response to the overloaded anxiety ridden Christmas season our society tends toward, is to take the four weeks of Advent and infuse them with four alternative ways to prepare for Christmas. They are: Worship Fully, Spend Less, Give More, and Love All.
WORSHIP FULLY - Christmas marks the moment where God's promise was fulfilled and love took form, tiny fingers and all. It is a moment that deserves our full attention and praise. We put WORSHIP FULLY as AC's first tenet because we believe the level of our involvement at Christmas is based entirely on how much we are celebrating Christ's birth. He deserves celebration; one that is creative, loud and directs every heart His way.
SPEND LESS - Quick question for you: What was the one gift you remember getting for Christmas last year? Next question: What about the fourth gift? Do you remember that one? Truth is many of us don't because it wasn't something we necessarily wanted or needed. SPENDING LESS isn't a call to stop giving gifts; it's a call to stop spending money on gifts we won't remember in less than a year. America spends around $450 billion dollars during the Christmas season, and much of that goes right onto a credit card. By spending wisely on gifts we free ourselves from the anxiety associated with debt.
GIVE MORE - We know what you're thinking. "Wait, didn't they just say I should spend less, and yet here they are telling us to GIVE MORE? What gives?" The most powerful, memorable gift you can give to someone else is yourself. And nobody modeled this more than Jesus. So what does this look like for you? Tickets to a ball game or the theater? A movie night? The main point is simple: When it comes to spending time with those you love, it's all about quality, not quantity.
|
|
|
LOVE ALL - It all boils down to love. Love from a savior. Love to a neighbor in need. By spending just a little less on gifts we free up our resources to love as Jesus loves by giving to those who really need help. This is the conspiracy three churches began a few years ago, and has since grown to an international movement where thousands of churches have raised millions of dollars to love others in life-changing ways."
Pastor Halverson and the people from - The Advent Conspiracy - have challenged us to take Advent and CHRISTmas to heart and to use our God given gift of intellect to make caring, compassionate, and wise choices over the next four weeks and twelve days. May all of us more fully commit ourselves to a CHRIST-centered time of preparation and joy-filled celebration!
Your Brother in CHRIST, Pastor David Jones

Thank you to the PEP group for making and filling out the 300 tags for the Giving Tree! Thanks for the many gifts that have already come in!

There are many positions open at LOL where we could use your help. We are in need of more people for Altar Care (setting up the communion), we need folks to help serve communion, and also we are in need of more lectors, greeters, and assisting ministers. These are needed at all 3 services ..... if you feel you can help in any of these positions or you would like more information regarding any of them please get in touch with Barbara Wagner, 609-859-0404 or call the church office. Please pray about where you can serve our Lord at Lord of Life.

Stewardship Update - EOS inputs STILL NEEDED!

Last January, we as a congregation decided on our mission plan for the year. We call that mission plan our budget. In our mission plan, we laid out how we wanted to do ministry in our congregation, in our community, through our synod, across the country and around the world.
Together we have done so much since last January. The series of videos we have shown in October & November highlights many of the efforts going on as we Learn, Serve and Celebrate our ministries and fulfill our mission. But we have much more to do. Over the next month, we can make a significant difference in Jesus' name when we complete our mission plan through the holidays by serving those in need and celebrating the birth of our Lord.
Just as we together have a mission plan, so each of us individually has a giving plan. The two are connected. For us together to accomplish our mission plan, each of us individually needs to accomplish our giving plan. In this last month of the year, please review your giving plan and your actual giving for the year. Use December to accomplish your giving plan so, together, we can accomplish our mission plan. Thanks for all you have made possible through your giving, and thanks for helping us do even more in the month ahead.

AND PLEASE return the EOS (Estimate of Sharing - GREEN card) as soon as possible, or fill out the online EOS from a link below OR www.lordlife.us. Even if you can't make a commitment at this time we need your estimate do begin financial planning for 2013 (if unsure enter $1). We had 78% returns in 2010, we are hoping for 100% returns this year (hope springs eternal!). It is easy to do, easy to access this year with the online form (one member did it from his smartphone), and only takes a minute to do! Please prayerfully consider your support of our ministries, and make an effort to return this card, or you can fill it out online (on from the church website at www.lordlife.us). We also have a web link for the time & talent survey, so we can find opportunities for you to share your gifts with others. For those who would like to use the automatic 'simply giving' process, a link is also available on the web. We need returns from all members of their estimates of sharing (even if you can't make a commitment at this time we need that info back). We hope with the sample of the Learning / Serving / Celebrating videos shown each week you will see how our gifts are changing lives and serving God.

November 20th, brought nine little turkeys to Lord of Life. Grace Place had their annual Thanksgiving Feast in which the children put on a show and hosted their families with soup, muffins, and dessert. No, we didn't cook the turkeys because the other thirteen children "saved" them by hiding them under their coats! Grace Place continues their tradition of "giving back" by organizing a Hurricane Sandy donation station in the FDC. Ms. Jill's truck was used to deliver items twice. That was more than thirty bags of clothing and supplies. The High School kids have followed the lead and are meeting at the drop-off center to organize all the donations so far. Just goes to show how little hands can make a difference. As the calendar changes to December, we are now shifting for that awaited holiday, Christmas. Our classes are starting to prepare for their Christmas show so make sure you put the date on your calendar now. It is December 20th, at 6:30 pm in the Church. The children will be telling the Christmas story as viewed by the Wise Men.
|

As we get closer to the holidays, the list of items needed at Lutheran Care grows. The Auxiliary will have their Holiday Shoppe for the residents where they may pick gifts for family members at no charge. Needed are gently used, small gift items such as jewelry, toys, perfume, make-up, scarves, hair accessories, wallets, etc. Also needed are gift bags, tissue paper, and tape for wrapping the gifts-also at no charge. Always needed are soft dolls and doll clothes for the Alzheimer's unit, nail polish and remover, Christmas cards, note pads, and 2013 calendars.
