Thoughts in Print - from Pastor Sue

A great many of you have expressed concern for members of our congregation who may have been directly impacted by Hurricane Sandy as well as a desire to support the on-going relief efforts along the shore so I wanted to take this opportunity to bring all of you up to speed on the latest and greatest information available.

First of all, I'm pleased to report that we've been communicating with members of the congregation who have properties on or near the shore. For the most part they seem to have fared relatively well. There are some who have suffered water and wind damage to their properties, and we're continuing to be in communication with those folks to provide support as we know more about their specific situations. We'll let you know how you can help where help may be needed in the near future.

As for the larger relief effort along the shore and elsewhere, there are a number of opportunities that have been identified. Most agencies are communicating that right now the greatest need is actually monetary donations and food, cleaning, and personal care necessities. There are also a few volunteer opportunities that we can share as well. The following information is the latest and greatest I have.

However you decide to help support the hurricane relief efforts - THANK YOU! And please remember to keep all those impacted and those who are supporting them in your prayers!

For Monetary Donations (These are listed alphabetically and not by any implied priority.):

For Material Donations:

We will be collecting donations here at the church in support of the Lutheran Disaster Response effort. Items collected will be coordinated with LSMNJ for delivery. Most needed items are as follows:

  • Bottled water, Boxed or Powdered Milk
  • Personal Care Items - Toothpaste, Toothbrushes, Shampoo, Conditioner, Soap (bar or body), Comb & Brush, Mouthwash, Washcloths, Hand Towels, Deodorant, Disposable Razors, Hand Sanitizer
  • Cleaning Supplies - Work Gloves, Disinfectant Wipes, Sponges, Scrub brushes, Scouring pads, Dish soap, Household Cleaner, Disposable Cleaning Towels, Laundry Detergent, Heavy-duty Trash Bags

Please bring any of these items that you wish to donate to the church and place them in the designated area in the Fellowship Hall.

For Volunteer Opportunities:

More general information can be found at:

And some additional info from Penny Miller:

  • The Bucket Brigades (Stafford, Waretown, Tuckerton, N. Ocean County, etc)

- Bucket Brigades carry on the tradition that the UMCOR started. These buckets provide vital, initial supplies to victims of natural disasters. Each 5-gallon bucket includes (among other things) antiseptic cleaner, scrubbing utensils, heavy-duty trash bags, workgloves, dust masks and towels. The buckets are assembled and distributed by volunteers. Talk about a hands-on ministry! There are bucket brigades all over the Jersey Shore that need supplies and volunteers to assemble and deliver buckets. All of the brigades have Facebook pages, that's their main POC.

  • The Stafford Storm Relief Center

The Stafford Storm Relief Center opened as a necessary central location for donations and distribution to the people of the Jersey Shore. The township used its former municipal building as a base. It is located at 775 East Bay Avenue in Manahawkin. The center is the hub of activity. They disperse volunteer squads to do house cleanups throughout the area, they provide meals, they provide clothing, they provide hot coffee and counseling. They are collecting cleaning supplies, non-perishable food, manual labor, blankets, heaters, etc. They need volunteers to sort, work in the field, cook meals and organize. They distribute supplies to other relief centers and bucket brigades. They work 1:1 with the people and provide not only necessary relief but emotional support. More Hurricane Sandy Info

Hello Supporting Churches & Members:                    Thu Nov 8, 2012

Debbie McIlhenny and I visited the Red Cross Shelter at BCC today for about 30 minutes. Our hearts were broken at the number of people and the stories we heard of devastation. However, the Red Cross volunteers kept telling us how all the people are staying strong and taking everything in stride. I believe that is answer to all our prayers. The R.C. volunteers told me that their most urgent need is cell phones with minutes. Most of the people have used up all their minutes on their free Government phones and can not communicate with family, landlords, out of County Welfare Boards, etc. Anyone wishing to gift such a phone, can purchase one at Radio Shack, Wal Mart, etc.

The R.C. stressed NOT to bring in these donations to the shelter and start a panic, since everyone needs the phones and minutes. They would also like to have healthy snacks like apples, bananas, & grapes. Donors can bring the fruit to the shelter, but donations of cell phones or minutes cards should be brought to the church office or Christian Caring Center.

Thank you for your continued prayers and support and for putting this in your bulletins or if we are to late for this week for making an announcement.

3D Sunday Nights - Dessert, Devotions, and Discovery!

3d glasses   Continuing our new study opportunity "Dessert, Devotions, and Discovery!" The idea is to have an open study on Sunday evenings where we can come together to share some refreshments and be spiritually refreshed as well. We'll be starting this new study with a potpourri of sorts so that we can get an idea of what people are looking for. The four dates and topics for November are:

  • Nov 18 - A Reluctant Prophet Named Jonah - A more traditional bible study featuring Jonah, a Big Fish, and animals in sack cloth and ashes. Don't miss it!
  • Nov 25 - Unplug the Christmas Machine

Please prayerfully consider joining us for one or more of these opportunities on Sunday evenings. We look forward to seeing you and to get your ideas of where we can go next with this somewhat more flexible approach to study that allows folks to come and go and to pick and choose while being fed by God's word.    (no 3D glasses required!)

Thanks & Help Wanted!

THANK YOU

Thanks to all the folks who made goodies for our brunch on Sunday, November 4th - many people stayed and enjoyed the food, fellowship and slide show that was put together by Bill Dreisbach.  Also a thanks goes out to the girls that helped in the kitchen.  It definitely was Gods Hands at Work!!!  [And great coordination by Barb Wagner! - Editor]

Thanks to our Lutheran Care angels for all of their special care in helping the residents to share in our program, Sounds of Joy!

Thanks to all of our property helpers for taking care of the lawn, leaves, lights, trash, recycling, and a myriad of other things that help to maintain our building inside and out!

HELP WANTED:

There are many positions open at LOL where we could use your help.  We are in need of more people for Altar Care (setting up the communion), we need folks to help serve communion, and also we are in need of more lectors and assisting ministers.  These are needed at all 3 services ..... if you feel you can help in any of these positions or you would like more information regarding any of them please get in touch with Barbara Wagner, 609-859-0404 or call the church office. Please pray about where you can serve our Lord at Lord of Life.

Stewardship Update - EOS inputs lagging

EOS thermometer     PLEASE return the EOS (Estimate of Sharing - GREEN card) as soon as possible, or fill out the online EOS from a link below OR www.lordlife.us.  Even if you can't make a commitment at this time we need your estimate do begin financial planning for 2013.   We had 78% returns in 2010, we are hoping for 100% returns this year (hope springs eternal!).  It is easy to do, easy to access this year with the online form (one member did it from his smartphone), and only takes a minute to do!

Please prayerfully consider your support of our ministries, and make an effort to return this card, or you can fill it out online (on from the church website at www.lordlife.us).   We also have a web link for the time & talent survey, so we can find opportunities for you to share your gifts with others.  For those who would like to use the automatic 'simply giving' process, a link is also available on the web.

We need returns from all members of their estimates of sharing (even if you can't make a commitment at this time we need that info back).  We hope with the sample of the Learning / Serving / Celebrating videos shown each week you will see how our gifts are changing lives and serving God.

Fall "Stories to Tell, Gifts to Share" Videos

Stories to Tell - Gifts to Share   This fall members of our congregation have given witness in the "Stories to Tell, Gifts to Share" videos. If you have missed any of the Stewardship Videos on 'SERVING',  'LEARNING' or 'CELEBRATING' they are all available on YouTube at the links below.
Thanks again to all helping with these witnesses to our faith, both 'on camera' and off!

Thanksgiving Dinner Project

Thanksgiving Bags     Are you starting to think about how you'll be celebrating Thanksgiving this year?  What food you'll serve, who will be sitting around your table, what your many blessings are?  Well, how about adding the folks served by the Christian Caring Center to your ponderings.   Our annual Thanksgiving Dinner Project will be coming to a close this weekend.  The needs are for: turkey gift certificates from Acme, stuffing mix, canned vegetables, gravy, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce and fruit, instant mashed potatoes, juices in plastic containers, dessert mixes like cakes and brownies, and canned frosting.

Buy as many of the items on the list as you feel called, then drop them off in the church entryway by ==> Sunday, Nov. 18th <==.  What better way to give thanks than to share what we have with others!  Thanks to everyone who has contributed already!
