Thoughts in Print - from Pastor Sue

Last Spring when we completed our work on our new Vision Statement we also came up with some Guiding Principles for our live together here at Lord of Life. Just in case you haven't taken a look at them lately they are:

Guiding Principles

  • We keep all that we do centered in the life and message of Jesus Christ.
  • We warmly welcome and actively invite everyone in the openness of God's love.
  • We regularly celebrate our faith through diverse and creative expressions of word, song and sacrament.
  • We follow Christ's example by gladly sharing who we are and what we have in thoughtful service to each other, our communities, and all people in need.
  • We nurture and support all people through prayer and care.
  • We value and participate in learning opportunities for spiritual growth.
  • We create opportunities to build and strengthen Christian community.

This a wonderful list of the things that help us to stay focused on what we think is important in life and in ministry. You'll notice that I highlighted one of the things in the list, that being that we value and participate in learning opportunities for spiritual growth. Spending time both together and individually in the study of God's word is a vital part of who we are as people of faith. Here at Lord of Life we've done a great job in working on educational opportunities for our children and we also have several learning opportunities for adults, but we learned through our conversations while we were working on our Vision that there are still ways we can improve on that.

Pastor Jones and I feel the time is right to launch a new study we're calling 3D Sunday Nights. 3D stands for Dessert, Devotions, and Discovery. The idea is to have an open study on Sunday evenings where we can come together to share some refreshments and be spiritually refreshed as well. We'll be starting this new study in November with a potpourri of sorts so that we can get an idea of what people are looking for. The four dates and topics for November will be:

  • November 4 - A "Two Kingdoms" Approach to Elections and Voting - A look at how does our Lutheran brand of Christianity inform our participation in the political process.
  • November 11 - A NOOMA Look at the Holy Spirit - Several years ago Christian teacher Rob Bell produced a series of wonderful videos concerning faith in the "real world" We'll be taking a look at one of those videos as the basis for our study.
  • November 18 - A Reluctant Prophet Named Jonah - A more traditional bible study featuring Jonah, a Big Fish, and animals in sack cloth and ashes. You can't miss it!
  • November 25 - A Pentecostal Pastor's Perspective Within the Christian Community - A conversation with a guest speaker on life in Christian community.

Sooooo.... Please prayerfully consider joining us for one or more of these opportunities on Sunday evenings. We look forward to seeing you and to get your ideas of where we can go next with this somewhat more flexible approach to study that allows folks to come and go and to pick and choose while being fed by God's word. Keep your eyes and ears open for more details!

Yours in Christ - Pastor Sue

Thanks & Help Needed

Thank you to all of the participants sharing their stories and gifts in the fall stewardship videos.  We know it is tough to be 'on camera' but it is important to let everyone know how our congregation's time, talents and treasures are used and shared.  Thanks to: Betty Mastrillo, Renee Jones, Fran Jones, Pastor Sue, Penny Miller, Merle Brown, Pastor Dave, Diane Maurer, Renee Thomas, Marie Lamb, Jill Glossner, Lisa Spector, Rick Krause, Ed Hourihan, Leah Hamilton, Rick Osman, Sue Dreisbach and Scott Glossner.  Sorry we didn't have time to include everyone we videotaped!

Thank You to who ever planted all the beautiful flowers at the front door.  Everyone is talking about them and how nice they look!

ADDITIONAL CONFIRMATION COACHES NEEDED FOR 7th AND 8TH GRADE
- We still need some additional people to help coach our Confirmation Learning sessions on Sunday mornings during the school year. There are a total of 12 sessions in all occurring in October, January, and March. The Pastors Jones could use some assistance with the 8th grade class and we're looking for another person to partner with Kristy Godfrey in working with the 7th grade class. Please contact Pastor Sue, Marie Lamb or the church office if you're interested in helping.

Stewardship Update - EOS cards needed by Nov 3-4!

EOS mailing Oct 2012
You should have received your Estimate of Sharing ("EOS") letter & green return card in the mail this week.  We would like to have all of these returned by the Nov 4th weekend, EVEN if you can't make a commitment at this time. We have a guest speaker (Pastor Linda Wood) for that weekend which is special because it is the end of our 25th Anniversary Year of missions and ministries for Christ.

Please prayerfully consider your support of our ministries, and make an effort to return this card, or NEW this year with this link you can fill it out online (on our website at www.lordlife.us).   We also have a web link for the time & talent survey, so we can find opportunities for you to share your gifts with others.  For those who would like to use the automatic 'simply giving' process, a link is also available on the web.

We are striving for 100% returns from all members of their estimates of sharing (even if you can't make a commitment at this time we need that info back). It is important to receive these by the end of the 25th Anniversary year so we can plan for and look forward to 2013 and the ministries that you make possible.  We hope with the sample of the Learning / Serving / Celebrating videos shown each week you will see how our gifts are changing lives and serving God.

Fall "Stories to Tell, Gifts to Share" Videos

This fall members of our congregation are giving witness in the "Stories to Tell, Gifts to Share" videos. If you have missed the first two Stewardship Videos on 'SERVING', or would like to see them again, here they are!  Thanks again to all helping with these witnesses to our faith, both 'on camera' and off!  (click on photo to play)

Men's Fellowship News

CALLING ALL MEN OF FAITH !

Why not join the 12 men who have already come out to our Wednesday morning study this Fall at the Red Lion Diner in Southampton (Our server Eleanor would love to see some NEW smiling faces!).  We invite you to "exercize your faith" with no fuss or muss and very little pain and strain.  We meet from 8AM to 9AM in our own room in the back of the diner.  We order off the breakfast menu (Pumkin Pancakes are now available!) and then share time in fellowship and faithful conversation.

Even if you haven't joined us before, please don't hesitate to join us NOW!  Our topic of conversation for the next several weeks will be the book of James (considered by many scholars to be the work of Jesus' oldest brother).  If you have a bible, bring it along!  If you have any questions about the MFB, just call me (609-707-6575) or E-mail me (Rev_Jones@lordlife.us).  Looking forward to seing you whenever you're able to join us!

  - Your Brother in CHRIST, Pastor Jones

Update on Solar

Roof Replacement    Lots of things happening 'in the background' as we finish the official signing of the papers and prepare the building for the panels, which are expected to be installed by the spring of 2013.  You may have noticed the roof replacement in the front of the building, which allows us to install panels with confidence they won't have to be removed during the project lifetime.  We will keep you informed of any other major 'happenings' as the project continues!
For any questions please contact Bill Reich, Scott Glossner or Bill Dreisbach.

Adult Bible Study

Holy Humor...

It was Palm Sunday but because of a sore throat, 5-year-old Johnny stayed home from church with a sitter. When the family returned home, they were carrying several palm fronds.
Johnny asked them what they were for.
"People held them over Jesus' head as he walked by," his father told him.
"Wouldn't you know it," Johnny fumed, "the one Sunday I don't go and He shows up."
