September 12, marked the 38th anniversary of my arrival in Haiti. An independent, Teen Challenge, type ministry, World Ministry Outreach sponsored a small mission here and needed a motorcycle fixed. I bought a ticket and volunteered to fix the bike; while giving my salvation testimony, the Lord said, "The same way I changed your life I will change these Haitians' lives". After that two-week visit, I knew I no longer belonged in the US; Christ had called me to Haiti. I was twenty years old.

I returned contacting typhoid and hepatitis from bad water; a month in ICU, ended when the Lord miraculously touched me. My doctor assured me that Haiti would be my end; my Mom begged me not to go back, but I could not refuse the Lord. By then the mission disbanded so with my meager savings I lived in a mud hut; first in the L'Atibonite River Valley and then in the Central Plateau. There my Creole became fluent and my faith increased when a child with whooping cough was healed as I prayed!

In the Central Plateau village of San Rafael, it occurred to me that a wife would be a great help. I set out on foot, as my horse was a loaner and I did not have a car, visiting missions looking for a Christian wife! When I reached Port au Prince, there was a message from my Mom, "Come home your sister is getting married in August". Back in NY, I met Yvonne in September; we married in December of that year.

In the shadow of His wing

Today 38 years later, we are still non-denominated, unsponsored by any organization, faith missionaries, dependent on the Holy Spirit speaking to your heart to help us do His work.  We weathered decades on one of the toughest mission fields and today reach 2 million Haitians daily with the Good News of Jesus Christ!  I thank God for you every day and I pray that He will continue to bless your family and your ministry. You are one of the many answers to my prayers for Haiti . . .Though I am not a rich man, starting next month I plan to double my donation to your ministry, because I think it's worthwhile. I will also continue to tell about your ministry to all the Haitians that I know in the Diaspora. . .
