Yesterday Yvonne and I drove to the northern village of Hinche in Haiti's Central Plateau. Our last trip there together, thirty years ago in a borrowed open jeep over rock paths, left us rattled to the bone and covered in dust. Now the asphalted Route Nationale 3 runs along breathtaking Lake Peligre where the salt-water lake generates hydroelectric power! We visited Adline Joseph featured in our La Bonne Nouvelle Hinche show.
Adline a 67-year-old Haitian nun feeds 10,000 children every day with a perfect protein she creates from local products. Root flour, sesame seeds, peanuts and honey combine to serve a dry tack "cassava" with peanut and sesame butter! The children love it and the snack prevents malnutrition and accompanying diseases. To support the work Sr. Adline sells peanut butter, honey, dry tack, and jams that she and other nuns make.
Three years ago when told of this amazing work, I knew it would be a great La Bonne Nouvelle, The Good News, episode. When we showed up with two cinematographers and put a mic on Adline, she protested, "O! I cannot do this!" However, as cameras rolled, she explained feeding the areas' poor every day. The episode brought the work to the attention of local and international Haitians, generating support for the feeding program in Hinche!
The mission of our Creole Christian TV show is to highlight the good things that God is doing in Haiti to relieve the poverty, hunger and ignorance. At the same time, we film the beauty of Haiti like the lush countryside and beautiful people. Instead of the negative scenes that media and social work programs exploit to gain donations and viewers, La Bonne Nouvelle films the pride of Haitians everywhere! This God inspired approach has given us a pulpit that reaches into millions of homes every day!
