From Your PTSA
As we reach the end of the school year, we look back at this incredible year for the Miami Beach Senior High PTSA.The year has had so many highlights, including new fundraising achievements, innovative and timely educational events for school members, new levels of support for our teacher and students, while thoughtfully continuing to build our program. Our organization is a respected and a viable force in Miami Beach.
Much of this success is due to the effective leadership of PTSA President Kayla Rynor. Kayla has selflessly served as President with extraordinary commitment.Kayla's dedication to our students, teachers and Board Members is truly admirable.
She spent countless hours in meetings, communicating with members, effectively working with the school administration, planning and executing productive events, and attending community events. Kayla represented our organization with grace, intelligence and thoughtful articulation.
We thank you for your sensational devotion, humble and kind approach and your endless abilities. This PTSA has prospered under your leadership, allowing us to reach new success and community pride!

A Celebration of Debate
On behalf of the parents, we want to thank Russ Rywell for a wonderful presentation at the third annual end-of-the-year Speech and Debate celebration on May 28, which concluded an incredible year. Mr. Rywell, you made each and every one of those students there feel that their efforts to support the team were important and valued. You also made the seniors feel proud to have participated on the team for the past few years. We completely agree with your sentiments that the seniors' experience made a difference in their high school experience. Mostly, you reminded us of your extreme dedication to Speech and Debate. For this, we are extremely grateful.
We were also very excited to learn tonight that you will be teaching five debate classes next year, along with economics. Kudos to the administration for recognizing your value at Beach High. And parents, we need to step up to the plate next year to support this, now more than ever. You are all officially invited to join the tournament and debate dinner committees.
We also want to thank the Kauffmans for opening their beautiful home and bay view for this event, and all the parents who brought great food.

Health & Wellness
Disease Prevention with Hormones
By Laura Jimenez, M.S.W. * www.tpsw.org - laura.jimenez@akerman.com
Whether we know it or not, hormones affect us from before we were even born throughout the rest of our lives. Thus, hormones are certainly not something that affects only teenagers. While it is true that hormones are raging during that time, the important role that hormones play in so many aspects of our lives cannot be overemphasized. Now, thinking of hormones in this new light, consider the possibility that at whatever stage you are in, there can be improvement in your long-term quality of life, prevention of chronic illnesses and maintenance of wellness.
Hormones are incredibly powerful. They are actually your body's chemical messengers. Slowly, over time, they affect many different processes, including development and growth, metabolism (how your body acquires energy from the foods you eat), mood, reproduction, sexual function and more.
Hormone levels change in response to our environment, food intake, medications, pollutants and stress levels. Since there is no one size fits all with hormones, and it only takes a tiny amount to cause big changes in cells or even your whole body, a well-informed patient who finds a well-versed physician knowledgeable about hormones will likely result in overall improved health. While a properly trained endocrinologist is the best specialty for hormone therapy, some family doctors, internists, medical physicians and osteopaths are equally knowledgeable.
Although not everyone agrees, here's a short list of illnesses which might be prevented by ensuring that our hormones are balanced with bioidentical hormones: acne, adrenal disorders, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, dementia, osteoporosis, pituitary disorders, thyroid disorders, weight problems and others.
Keep in mind that hormones refer not only to the more common types like estrogen, progesterone and testosterone, but also ACTH, DHEA, FSH, LH, PTH, SHBG and TSH, just to name a few.
A prudent course of action would be to seek the advice of a trusted friend or family member whose hormones are regulated and discuss the possibility of a recommendation for seeing that physician for yourself. Don't underestimate how good you will feel when your hormones are properly balanced, and how much better you might look as well.
As always, you are encouraged to read as much as you can about this important topic as it pertains to your specific health concerns. Here are a few links to get you started:
