A Small Donation to Make a Big Difference

- Staff appreciation and recognition events
- Student recognition, honor roll and graduation support
- Educational materials and classroom supplies including classroom books, art materials, cameras, Rosetta Stone licenses, and aquarium
- Sports teams and club needs including tournament registration fees, uniforms, equipment, and supplies

You can donate online by credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express) or check via Paypal. You don't need to have a Paypal account. Please click on the link below to be redirected to the MBSH website: Donate to your PTSA Cash or Checks can be sent to: MBSH PTSA, 2231 Prairie Avenue, Miami Beach, FL 33139. All donations are tax deductible. Thank you and we look forward to a great year.

Come Support the Beach High Debate Team
Miami Beach Senior High is thrilled to host the SFCFL Tournament on Saturday, October 12, 2013. This is the first time that our school will host a tournament of this size. It is a great opportunity to represent our school and to raise much of the needed funds for the Blue Key tournament at the end of October.
While Coach Rywell is busy preparing our debate teams, we need the participation, support and leadership of all parents for this wonderful day. We anticipate approximately 500 student competitors, 100 adult judges, plus a small tab room staff of coaches. There are five areas that need your help: - donating and bringing in food & items
- helping to run an area
- judging
- monetary donations
- finding corporate sponsors
To this end, we have prepared a task sign-up sheet for all parents as a google doc. If you would like to help and/or are part of the Debate team but you didn't receive the email, please contact hitidespeechdebatetournaments@gmail.com Beach High Students and Puppets on Lincoln Road The Puppet Show "Fantasma" was presented in front of the Regal Cinema on Lincoln Road on Sunday, September 22, at 6:00 p.m. The students have been working with Jim Hammond of The Puppet Network of Fort Lauderdale and the South Beach Chamber Ensemble since last spring. The students are in the Theatre Department of Miami Beach High School representing the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts. "Fantasma" is an interactive show telling a story. Nine foot tall puppets are manipulated by students (most of the puppets take three students) with music selected and performed to enhance the story. It is wonderful for the students to have the opportunity to work with professional artists. It prepares students for careers in Hospitality & Tourism. Considering that five out of eight jobs in South Florida are dependent on this industry, it is a much needed and worthwhile venue to prepare students for dynamic, varied and well sought out careers. Many of them will end up working with you in the future. The Academy has been funded by a federal grant for the past five years. Unfortunately, this source of funding has come to an end. In order to maintain and continue to improve what we offer our students, we need your help. The Academy is looking for sponsors who would support important initiatives such as field trips, Silent Auction, professional attire for students, and Internships. Please open the attached letter from Ms. Gregory, Lead Teacher, and read the Academy's Wish List. If you or somebody that you know own a business, please consider supporting the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism and increase your visibility in school through banners with your logo and plaques. Thanks for your support! Attached: letter from Ms. Gregory. Used Sneaker Drive for Haitian Kids A school wide used sneaker drive will be held from Monday October 7th through Friday October 11th in school.Collections will take place in the front courtyard every morning from 6:45 a.m. to 7:15 a.m. throughout that week: We are only collecting used sneakers (including Converse) and all sizes will be accepted. Sneakers must be clean, have no holes or excessive wear on the soles and they must be tied together as a pair with clean laces. All donations will benefit students and their families who live in Cite Soleil, one of the poorest communities in Haiti. The sneakers will be shipped to Foundation Athletique D'Haiti, a non-profit organization located in the Cite Soleil area that serves and empowers at risk children from ages 6 - 18 through sport and education. This initiative is being organized and run by the Junior IB class as a component of the IB Creativity Action Service (CAS) project. Start looking through your closet now and be ready to send in used sneakers from all family members, starting on Monday, October 7th. Beach High Alumnus Chef-inTraining
In celebration of Rosh Hashanah, Temple Emanu-El of Miami Beach hosted two festive meals prepared under the direction of "chef" Andrew Jacobs, a student at the Miami Culinary Institute at Miami-Dade College.
Andrew Jacobs, 24, is a graduate of Miami Beach Senior High. He attended Miami Dade College and Santa Fe College in Gainesville before deciding to become a chef.
So, how did this novice end up in charge of the holiday dinners?
"The rabbi's wife came up to me and heard that I am in culinary school and asked me to help," explains Jacobs. "Helping turned into doing it."
The first night's menu features Salmon Wellington with broccoli rabe for approximately 70 people. The second night's fare: fried onion-crusted mahi mahi with sautéed green beans and spinach for about 30 guests.
"I am excited to be able to partake in all of the festivities at the temple and hope that everyone enjoys the meals that we've put together," says Jacobs.
Will he be paid for his efforts? "No," says Andrew's father, Jerry Jacobs, the synagogue's co-president. "We are feeding him dinner."

Take a Stand Against Bullying
This year, over 13 million American kids will be bullied at school, online, on the bus, at home, through their cell phones and in streets of their towns, making it the most common form of violence young people in this country experience. BULLY is the first feature documentary film to show how we have all been affected by bullying, whether we have been victims, perpetrators or stood silent witness.
Every school in the United States is grappling with bullying - each day more than 160,000 kids across the country are absent because they are afraid of being bullied.
The City of Miami Beach in partnership with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), and former NBA professional Alonzo Mourning, Jr., is sponsoring the Community of Respect Anti-Bullying event. This community-wide activity will take place on Sunday, September 29, 2013, at 6:30 p.m. at the North Shore Bandshell (7275 Collins Avenue). The goal of this event is to bring together residents of Miami Beach to support students, teachers, and parents, in creating a safe, peaceful, and respectful community for all. The schedule for the evening is as follows:
6:30 p.m. Welcome
6:40 p.m. Overview Community of Respect & No Place for Hate
6:45 p.m. Alonzo Mourning Jr.
7:10 p.m. MB Teen Club "Spoken Word" performance
7:30 p.m. Viewing documentary "Bully"
9:00 p.m. Panel Discussion led by local experts*
9:15 p.m. Closing remarks
*Panel Experts:
Deborah Montilla - M-DCPS Student Services
Lily Medina - ADL Representative
Hava Holzhauer - ADL Regional Director
Alex Arcay - ADL Student Ambassador
Kathy Hersh - Bullying Prevention Specialist
"Bully" documents and vividly depicts losses due to school violence and suicide. It is the first feature documentary film to show how everyone has been affected by bullying, whether as victims, perpetrators or stood as silent witness. Parental discretion is advised and it is recommended that children under 12 are accompanied by an adult.
See the flyer here.

Health and Wellness
Home Made Dinner vs Fast Food By Laura Jimenez, M.S.W. (laura.jimenez@akerman.com) Life sometimes seems like we are simply dodging one bad health bullet after another. Take for instance chicken nuggets. Since history is an important factor to understand where we were at and not repeat ill fate, the following link provides a brief history of how bad McDonald's McNuggets were at one time: health.yahoo.net/chicken-nuggets-how-bad-are-they. Even with relatively recent improvements, there is still considerable room for advancement. This second link offers more details about the current day McNuggets and offers an opportunity to subscribe to this informative health newsletter: www.care2.com/ingredients-in-mcnuggets.html. When chicken nuggets are desired but the unappetizing McNuggets (and so many other processed foods) are boycotted, consider when there's extra time, the very best chicken nuggets are made at home from scratch with good quality and safe ingredients. The best cooking method is "oven fried." Surprisingly enough, there is good news however. While desserts are typically another evil, here's a link which provides not only healthy desserts, but more importantly, delicious ones also: www.care2.com/greenliving/5-delicious-desserts. Enjoy!
