PROGRAM NEWS
TCSA ACADEMY
Academy Winter Sessions I and II were well attended.  Academy Director, Tim Balatsoukas says, "It's nice to see many recreational players taking advantage of the off season and playing in the Academy during the winter months.  This is only going to enhance their development and boost the level of TCSA's recreational program at the same time."  I want to congratulate and thank coach Doco Wesseh for his full time commitment to the Academy the past four years.  It take a special person to have the patience and passion to develop young players and we have that in the Academy with him.

Academy Spring season kicked off on April 7th. Tim states, "We want to give every additional training opportunity possible to TCSA recreational players.  Academy staff will help evaluate your child's ability and educate parents about the next level of play available after Academy. This may include Classic or Premier Travel programs." If anyone is interested in attending a training session during the season, please send an email to [email protected] or call 847-814-0966.

FREE Academy Training opportunities will be available during the Spring!

TCSA PREMIER
The Premier program saw another successful season of winter training, transitioning our teams and players into the Spring season. Premier Director of Coaching, Vlatko Minic commented "From our High School girls making a splash at their various schools to our teams winning early Spring tournaments, I think that is a direct result of player dedication and parents commitment in bringing their kids to training through this tough winter".

The Premier Program is intended to be a highly competitive program.  As such, players and parents should expect to be committed to attending training sessions regularly, attending all league matches and tournaments.  To maintain a high level of development, the Premier Program entails a year-round program as follows:

Fall: August - November
Training/league play, tournaments

Winter: December - March
Training/league play, tournaments

Spring: April - June
Training/league play, tournaments

If you have any questions about our Premier Program, please contact [email protected] or Debbie - [email protected]

GETTING TO KNOW OUR COACHING STAFF

COACHES SPOTLIGHT

Position Played:  I always dreamed of being a forward but each coach I encountered had something slightly different in mind for me so I played these positions in this order throughout my career:  Forward, Center Midfield, Right Midfield, Right Back, Stopper and Left Midfield.

College Attended:  Judson University

Most Memorable Coaching Moment:  Most memorable coaching moment for me is every time the players and team executes what we teach in training in the games.  This shows me the level of concentration each player is performing at.  There is no other joy but to see players believe in themselves from what they have learned in training.

How do you prepare for the games/do you have any superstitions or rituals? I always make my lineup before the game on paper the night before based on the training during the week and then I make three game time changes based on what players I see in the warm up that are executing, concentrating and confident.  One superstition is that I always start the game sitting down until I see three things I don't think are going the way I like.

Why do you coach?  I coach because I truly want to give back to kids in this country who lack the technical side of the game.  I was fortunate to have this game pay me and take care of me until now so I owe it to the game.  I used to be the last player to be selected at training but was also on the other side of the spectrum.  Now it's time to help kids understand how good they can be if they apply themselves.

Advice for younger players: Don't let anyone tell you that you can't be good at something, not only in soccer but in everything.  In soccer you only need a ball and some space to juggle, dribble, shoot or practice your moves.  Once you achieved beating a player 1v1 on a consistent basis you have achieved what 50% of the game entails.

Favorite Soccer Team & Soccer Player: Barcelona & Lionel Messi

Favorite Quote:  "The coach's motivation must be the engine so the player must then go with the coach".

Person you most admire and why?
I admire Jose Mourinho as a coach because he has implanted his own beliefs, opinions and tactics in the game of soccer that no one has matched in the modern era.

Favorite club you look forward to playing?  I look forward to playing the Magic, Eclipse, Fire and Sockers because they give us the best challenge these days.

Ten years from now I will be... Watching players I've coached play in college and hopefully professional teams throughout the world!

TRAINER SPOTLIGHT

Position Played: Goalkeeper - U10 through Freshman year of college.  Central Midfield - Sophomore year through Chicago Fire U23.

Most Memorable Coaching Moment: I was asked, at the age of 22, to return to my high school, Hinsdale Central, to coach the Freshman Boys team.  It was interesting to be on the other side of soccer, at a relatively young age, coaching a team that I had been on only a few years prior.  It was a fun experience trying to share my knowledge and experience with the team and individual players.  I had no prior coaching experience, except for working camps, so it was a steep learning curve.

How do you prepare for games or do you have any superstitions or rituals?  As a coach, I don't have any set routines or rituals.  As a player, I was very relaxed about preparing for games and usually preferred not to warm-up.  I created a playlist that I burned onto a CD, before the days of mp3 players, and would start listening to  about an hour before warm-ups started.  The one ritual I had was to leave my shoes untied through the warm-up and when I tied my shoes, right before the game would start, it was a trigger for me to get focused and ready to compete.

Why do you coach? I spent the majority of my youth and adolescence solely focused on soccer, with aspirations of becoming a professional soccer player.  After moving on from those aspirations, coaching is a good way for me to stay involved with the game I grew up loving, and hopefully give something back to young players.

Advice for a younger player:  Do not allow others to decide what you can or cannot achieve in your soccer career.  Set goals for yourself and put forth the effort needed to attain those goals.  Big goals require lots of hard work.  Setbacks along the way to achieving goals are a test of your resolve.  Use those setbacks to evaluate your level of commitment and the quality of work you are putting forth

College Attended:  Rockford College

Favorite soccer team:  Arsenal

Favorite musical artist:  Miles Davis for light reading, Beethoven, or other classical music for focused reading, most Alternative music when in the car.

Favorite food:  If I had to eat one type of food for the rest of my life it would be Indian food because of the flavors and variety.

Favorite tournament you have played or coached in: All of the tournaments I played in abroad are pretty memorable - they included the Norway Cup, Gothia Cup and the Holland Cup (twice).

Advice for Parents: As hard as it can be at times, allow your children to determine what they want to get out of the game of soccer.  I grew up playing extremely competitive soccer, and it was very common to have  parents put pressure on their children and/or be very vocal on the sidelines.  As a player, that is rarely appreciated, and is one of the reasons players give up the game of soccer.  Be supportive and provide anything and everything you can if your child asks for help, but wait until they ask.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT

Flynn Collins

Why did you choose to play soccer?  I chose soccer because it is really fun, but I also love to score goals.

What position do you play?  Forward or a winger.

What has been your most memorable moment in your soccer career?
My most memorable moment would have to be scoring against and beating the Cicero Mayas with TCSA my sophomore year.  We shocked Illinois and the following year we were ranked with the Top Ten of the state.

Favorite Soccer Team & Soccer Player: Tottenham Hotspur & Gareth Bale

Favorite Actor: Andrew Garfield

Favorite Quote:  "Play every game like it's your last"

Person you admire most and why:  The person I admire most is an ex-teammate of mine at Marmion, Michael Frasca.  He plays at Dayton and not only was a good role model, but inspired me to be the best player I could be.

Worst Injury or setback you faced, how did you get through it:  Breaking my jaw during my senor high school season was extremely rough, but through the help of my family, friends and teammates, I was able to get through it and to continue playing the following year.

College attending:  Simpson College

Ten years from now I will be... Playing soccer every single day as a professional

Vlatko Minic, Premier Director of Coaching, commented, "Flynn is a great example of a player that came through our TCSA ranks and will be playing college soccer."  Having played in all three levels, rec, classic and premier, shows that hard work and persistence pays off in the end.  We wish Flynn the best of luck in his next chapter of life.
