An Introduction to
Sunday's Scripture Readings

In the hope that you will enter more fully into the Mass

The Father's "crazy love" for his lost son
YOUR BROTHER WAS LOST AND HAS BEEN FOUND
The readings for this Sunday demonstrate the unfathomable love our Father has for us and also teaches us about the love we should have for each other.
Our Gospel reading (Luke 15:1-32) is a collection of three parables, each demonstrating the lengths to which the Father will seek out and rejoice over even one of his lost sheep. First, are the parables of the lost sheep and the lost coin.
"Tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to Jesus, but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, 'This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.'
"So to them he addressed this parable. 'What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it? And when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy and, upon his arrival home, he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them, 'Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.' I tell you, in just the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance.
'Or what woman having ten coins and losing one would not light a lamp and sweep the house, searching carefully until she finds it? And when she does find it, she calls together her friends and neighbors and says to them, 'Rejoice with me because I have found the coin that I lost.' In just the same way, I tell you, there will be rejoicing among the angels of God over one sinner who repents.'"
Then, to drive the point home, Jesus told perhaps the most famous of his parables, the Prodigal Son. Not only does this remove any doubt about God's love, mercy and forgiveness, but it also draws a stark contrast with the older son's unwillingness to love and forgive.
After squandering his inheritance on debauchery, the prodigal son came to his senses and returned home, hoping to be counted among his father's hired workers.
"So he got up and went back to his father. While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him. His son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; I no longer deserve to be called your son.' But his father ordered his servants, 'Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Take the fattened calf and slaughter it. Then let us celebrate with a feast, because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.' Then the celebration began. Now the older son had been out in the field and, on his way back, as he neared the house, he heard the sound of music and dancing. He called one of the servants and asked what this might mean.
"The servant said to him, 'Your brother has returned and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.' He became angry, and when he refused to enter the house, his father came out and pleaded with him. He said to his father in reply, 'Look, all these years I served you and not once did I disobey your orders; yet you never gave me even a young goat to feast on with my friends. But when your son returns, who swallowed up your property with prostitutes, for him you slaughter the fattened calf.' He said to him, 'My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours. But now we must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.'''
Our first reading (Exodus 32:7-11, 13-14) is another, rather folksy tale of the Father's willingness to forgive the transgressions of his people.
"The LORD said to Moses, 'Go down at once to your people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt, for they have become depraved. They have soon turned aside from the way I pointed out to them, making for themselves a molten calf and worshiping it, sacrificing to it and crying out, 'This is your God, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt!' 'I see how stiff-necked this people is, ' continued the LORD to Moses. Let me alone, then, that my wrath may blaze up against them to consume them. Then I will make of you a great nation.' But Moses implored the LORD, his God, saying, 'Why, O LORD, should your wrath blaze up against your own people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt with such great power and with so strong a hand? Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, and how you swore to them by your own self, saying, 'I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky; and all this land that I promised, I will give your descendants as their perpetual heritage.'' So the LORD relented in the punishment he had threatened to inflict on his people."
Our Epistle reading from the First Letter to Timothy (1 Tim 1:12-17) is yet another example of God's mercy and forgiveness, this time to Paul who was once a persecutor of Christians.
"Beloved: I am grateful to him who has strengthened me, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he considered me trustworthy in appointing me to the ministry. I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and arrogant, but I have been mercifully treated because I acted out of ignorance in my unbelief. Indeed, the grace of our Lord has been abundant, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Of these I am the foremost. But for that reason I was mercifully treated."
So, after these three readings, there should be no doubt. God loves us and looks for any opportunity to forgive us and rejoices as our repentance and return to him. How do we know? The bible tells us so.

Pastor's Message

September 11, 2016

"A clean heart create for me, O God, and a steadfast spirit renew within me.
Cast me not out from your presence, and your Holy Spirit take not from me." Psalm 51

The Gospel for this weekend comes from Luke Chapter 15.  For the next few weeks will be taking our Sunday Gospel readings exclusively from Luke as we approach the end to the Year of Mercy in November.

This Gospel reading encompasses two significant parables, one of the "lost sheep" and the second concerning the "lost son", both powerful stories of compassion, mercy and of hope. The Gospel writer puts these stories at the very center of the Gospel (additionally along with the parable of the "lost coin") as if to show us the real inside meaning of the entire Gospel.  Jesus's words are expressed in word and action as he relates to those around him.  His mercy extends to the poor, the lame, the blind, and to sinners.  Who would ever expect that God would show his divine favor to the poor, the broken and the broken hearted?

But we shouldn't be surprised.  We read in Isaiah 55, "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways..." says the Lord.

Simply put, this means that God does not "think" like we do.  Understanding God's perspective requires prayer and the openness to discovering Gods mercy and generosity witnessed in our own life and in the lives of others.

Finally, a September reminder for parents:  Don't forget to sign your child up for Faith Formation and Sacramental programs.  Classes start next week.   Please see the bulletin for or call the office for more information. You can enroll for all our Faith Formation classes and Sacramental programs on-line at www.saintritawebster.org

May God bless you this week!

St Rita School
Spirit of Learning Corner

+ The St. Rita School faculty and staff were hard at work all summer long! One of the big projects tackled was the addition of new wood laminate flooring to two more classrooms. Our wonderful teachers have been back since the last week of August getting their rooms ready in anticipation of the first day!

+ Tuesday was student/teacher "Meet & Greet"! Kindergarten through Fifth Grade students dropped off their school supplies, setup their desks, and met their new teachers. The kindergarteners and their families enjoyed a special picnic on the playground that day complete with hot dogs, chips, and juice. Everyone had a blast!

+ There was so much "JOY" on the St. Rita campus Wednesday morning as each bus pulled in! Students gathered around the circle with their parents, teachers, and fellow classmates awaiting the official start of the school year.

+ Thursday and Friday were student/teacher "Meet & Greet" days for our three and four year old pre-kindergarteners. They met their teachers and saw their classroom for the first time. Their first day is this week!

+ "JOY" is the St. Rita school theme! We embrace learning with our basic theme J(Jesus), O(Others), Y(Yourself).

This fall, we have decided to return to the traditional "Little Rock Bible Study Series" and present the "Gospel According to Matthew". This will be a 9-part series beginning the first week of October.

Matthew presents Jesus of Nazareth as a great teacher and Son of God, emphasizing that he is Emmanuel ('God with us'), and that he is the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies. It follows the story from the virginal conception of Jesus, through his public ministry, to his passion, death, and resurrection, and commissioning the disciples to evangelize the whole world after his resurrection. Matthew, along with Mark and Luke, is one of the synoptic gospels. Matthew is the primary gospel of year 'A' in the Catholic Church's liturgical cycle which is beginning this November 27.

The dates and times are as follows:
  • Group 1 will meet Monday mornings in Room 1 from 10:00 - 11:30 am

It can be someone who has suffered a significant loss in their lives or those who are just going through a hard time.   Father has blessed the shawls and there is a prayer included with a reminder of God's love for them. It serves as their connection with St. Rita's parish even though they're not able to be with us physically. If you or someone you know is in need of a prayer shawl please contact Julie Cohn, Pastoral Minister at 671-1100 ext. 13 or email at jcohn@dor.org.

Our prayer shawl group meets each month to gather and make blankets for those who need to feel the loving presence of God and the love of our parish family.

DID YOU KNOW?

Some of our newer parishioners may wonder why we kneel after the recessional hymn at the end of Mass. It is a tradition at St. Rita Church to take a moment to say three Hail Mary's for the next person from our parish who will join the Lord in heaven.
