An Introduction to Sunday's Scripture ReadingsIn the hope that you will enter more fully into the Mass
 |
| | Luke 14:25-33 |
ANYONE WHO DOES NOT RENOUNCE ALL HIS POSSESSIONS CANNOT BE MY DISCIPLE This Sunday's scripture readings ask us to consider the cost of discipleship. In our first reading (Wisdom 9:13-18), we begin with a reading about the unfathomable wisdom of God. It helps set the tone for our Gospel reading. This is the supreme God whom Jesus tells us must be before all else. "Who can know God's counsel, or who can conceive what the LORD intends? For the deliberations of mortals are timid, and unsure are our plans. For the corruptible body burdens the soul and the earthen shelter weighs down the mind that has many concerns. And scarce do we guess the things on earth, and what is within our grasp we find with difficulty; but when things are in heaven, who can search them out? Or who ever knew your counsel, except you had given wisdom and sent your holy spirit from on high? And thus were the paths of those on earth made straight." In our Gospel reading (Luke 14:25-33), Jesus cautioned the crowds following him to consider the cost of discipleship before following him. It is not for the weak hearted. The cost -- complete detachment - from every thing and every one. "Great crowds were traveling with Jesus, and he turned and addressed them, 'If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. Which of you wishing to construct a tower does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there is enough for its completion? Otherwise, after laying the foundation and finding himself unable to finish the work the onlookers should laugh at him and say, 'This one began to build but did not have the resources to finish.' Or what king marching into battle would not first sit down and decide whether with ten thousand troops he can successfully oppose another king advancing upon him with twenty thousand troops? But if not, while he is still far away, he will send a delegation to ask for peace terms. In the same way, anyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.'" In our Epistle reading from the Letter to Philemon (9-10, 12-17), St. Paul gives us an example of the cost of discipleship we heard about in the Gospel. First, he is writing from prison, and secondly, he sends the former slave, Onesimus, to Philemon in Colossae. Onesimus is now "more tha a slave, a brother." "I, Paul, an old man, and now also a prisoner for Christ Jesus, urge you on behalf of my child Onesimus, whose father I have become in my imprisonment; I am sending him, that is, my own heart, back to you. I should have liked to retain him for myself, so that he might serve me on your behalf in my imprisonment for the gospel, but I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that the good you do might not be forced but voluntary. Perhaps this is why he was away from you for a while, that you might have him back forever, no longer as a slave but more than a slave, a brother, beloved especially to me, but even more so to you, as a man and in the Lord. So if you regard me as a partner, welcome him as you would me." What Jesus may really be saying is, whatever you love, detach yourself and love me more. Whomever you love, detach yourself and love me more. But as we see in our first reading, "thus were the paths of those on earth made straight."

Pastor's Message
"Blessed are the merciful, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven." Matthew 5:7
St. Rita School teachers and area teachers as well, have been busy preparing for the start of school this coming week. It is a time of excitement and opportunity for the whole community as everyone moves into the month of September. School buses fill the roads, shiny new books are handed out, tidy classrooms are full of energy and excited children all indicate the beginning of a great new school year and the change of seasons. At some time in our life I'm sure we have all experienced this feeling. May we embrace this new season with open eyes and open hearts to God's gracious love.
A PARENT'S PRAYER
Dear God, I thank you for the chance to watch my child grow and mature. I am grateful for the joy of helping me fulfill the divine plan you have for him/her.
Help my child to adjust to this new time and start of school without undue anxiety. Help him/her see your constant care and love. Give me the ability to offer compassionate parental love, encouragement and wisdom. Bless the teachers of my child, help my child to make good friends, keep them safe, and bless children and parents everywhere. Amen.
Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, president of the USCCB, has asked all dioceses in the United States to take part in a "Day of Prayer and Peace" in our communities this Friday, September 9, the Feast of Saint Peter Claver. Affirming his request for daily prayers for all the victims of violence and their loved ones and for peace in our world, our nation and our communities, Bishop Matano has requested that our parishes also take part in this special September 9 Day of Prayer for Peace. We will offer prayers at our daily Mass and ask you to personally take a moment this Friday to do the same.
This Sunday, September 4 is the canonization of Mother Teresa. While recovering from tuberculosis, Sister Teresa a consecrated missionary who had been teaching geography in a High School in Calcutta heard her vocational calling. Though already a member of the Sisters of Loretto, Sister Teresa had received an unmistakable request from the Lord: live and work among the poorest of the poor. Despite not knowing where or how she would accomplish His order, she obeyed. Mother Teresa stands as a pillar of compassion, an outspoken advocate for the protection of life -- from the sick and dying - to the unborn and the family.
May God bless you this week!

The 2nd Annual Field of Honor®
Again Pays Tribute
Friday, September 9 through
Sunday, September 11
The Field of Honor will be held on Patriot's Weekend and open to the public
from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm each day at Mercy Center (1437 Blossom Rd. Brighton)
Across the country, Fields of Honor® are created to provide families and friends an opportunity to honor current Military personnel and Veterans, Fire Department Personnel, Law Enforcement Personnel, and First Responders. The FOH is set up with symmetrical rows of 3 x 5 flags, on 8 ft. poles, with each flag bearing a Tribute Tag displaying the name of the honoree and information about his/her service to his/her country or community. Last year's Field of Honor®, at the Mercy Center, included tribute flags for: Firemen from various local districts, military who served in both World Wars, loved ones who served in Korea, Vietnam, those who are serving in the Middle East, and anyone who served during the Cold War and/or post-war situations.
During this three-day event, visitors come to walk the Field, read the tags, reflect, and appreciate the sacrifices made by those for whom the flags fly. The flags fly for 72 continuous hours. There will be an Opening Ceremony on Friday, September 9, at 10:00am and a Closing Ceremony on Sunday, September 11 at 2:00 pm.
The Field of Honor® will be open to the public during the 3-day event; and the flags will be illuminated and guarded until dawn.
Last year's event was described by one volunteer as: "... such an extraordinary experience and one we would truly like to participate in again. There was such a sacredness present."
If you, or someone you know, would like to purchase a Tribute Flag to honor a loved one or an entire service group, order forms and tribute tag forms are available from Natalie Depew at Mercy Bridges, 585-288-2710 x 121. A tribute flag can be purchased for $25 (previously flown) or $40 for a flag you can take home at the end of the event. The deadline for Tribute Flag orders is Monday, August 22. We would, also love to send a letter to your honoree upon your request.
A walk through the Field will be peaceful, inspiring and educational.
For more information, please contact Linda Almeter, the Volunteer Chairperson at: lindashw@frontiernet.net.
