An Introduction to Sunday's Scripture ReadingsIn the hope that you will enter more fully into the Mass
 |
| | Luke 11:1-13 |
LORD, TEACH US TO PRAY This Sunday's readings teach us not only what to pray, but how to pray - with persistence and hope. In our Gospel passage (Luke 11:1-13), the disciples ask Jesus how to pray. His response is the Lord's Prayer, but then follows it with instruction on persistence and the willing mercy of God. "Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, 'Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples.' He said to them, 'When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread and forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us, and do not subject us to the final test.' And he said to them, 'Suppose one of you has a friend to whom he goes at midnight and says, 'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, for a friend of mine has arrived at my house from a journey and I have nothing to offer him,' and he says in reply from within, 'Do not bother me; the door has already been locked and my children and I are already in bed. I cannot get up to give you anything.' I tell you, if he does not get up to give the visitor the loaves because of their friendship, he will get up to give him whatever he needs because of his persistence. "'And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. What father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish? Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an egg? If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?'" Our first reading (Genesis 18:20-32) is another example of both persistence in prayer and God's willing mercy. Abraham learns that the three divine visitors (from last week's Gospel) plan on carrying out God's destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah for their wickedness. Abraham implores God with persistence, to "spare the whole place" for the sake of the few innocents. God grants his request. "In those days, the LORD said: 'The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great, and their sin so grave, that I must go down and see whether or not their actions fully correspond to the cry against them that comes to me. I mean to find out.' While Abraham's visitors walked on farther toward Sodom, the LORD remained standing before Abraham. Then Abraham drew nearer and said: 'Will you sweep away the innocent with the guilty? Suppose there were fifty innocent people in the city; would you wipe out the place, rather than spare it for the sake of the fifty innocent people within it? Far be it from you to do such a thing, to make the innocent die with the guilty so that the innocent and the guilty would be treated alike! Should not the judge of all the world act with justice?' The LORD replied, 'If I find fifty innocent people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.' "Abraham spoke up again: 'See how I am presuming to speak to my Lord, though I am but dust and ashes! What if there are five less than fifty innocent people? Will you destroy the whole city because of those five?' He answered, 'I will not destroy it, if I find forty-five there.' But Abraham persisted, saying 'What if only forty are found there?' He replied, 'I will forbear doing it for the sake of the forty.' Then Abraham said, 'Let not my Lord grow impatient if I go on. What if only thirty are found there?' He replied, 'I will forbear doing it if I can find but thirty there.' Still Abraham went on, 'Since I have thus dared to speak to my Lord, what if there are no more than twenty?' The LORD answered, 'I will not destroy it, for the sake of the twenty.' But he still persisted: 'Please, let not my Lord grow angry if I speak up this last time. What if there are at least ten there?' He replied, 'For the sake of those ten, I will not destroy it.'" In our Epistle reading (Colossians 2:12-14), St. Paul explains how God, in his infinite love and mercy, has rescued us, despite our bondage of sin; and has forgiven our sins, nailing them to the cross. "You were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead. And even when you were dead in transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, he brought you to life along with him, having forgiven us all our transgressions; obliterating the bond against us, with its legal claims, which was opposed to us, he also removed it from our midst, nailing it to the cross." God rewards persistence.

 St. Rita School
Spirit of Learning Corner
DID YOU KNOW?
The Kim Mastrangelo Memorial Scholarship
(Established August 2014)
Kim Mastrangelo (1967-2014) cared so much about St. Rita School, volunteering her time over a decade of her life, even as she battled cancer.
This scholarship was created to continue Kim's efforts to sustain and develop St. Rita School for decades more students to enjoy. She never doubted the faculty, staff, and families that make our school such a vibrant community. However, Kim was concerned about St. Rita having enough funding to provide financial assistance, especially as parents faced the costs of sending their children to multiple Catholic schools (elementary, middle school, and high school) at the same time. The primary goal for the Kim Mastrangelo Memorial Scholarship is to provide financial assistance for families who need help providing a Catholic education for their children in multiple Diocese of Rochester Catholic schools.
Eligibility: Parents (guardians) of children enrolled in grades K-5 at St. Rita School are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Awards can be based on the applicant meeting some or all of the following criteria:
- Other child(ren) enrolled in grades 6-12 in a Diocese of Rochester Catholic school
- Demonstrated financial need
- Registered and supporting member of a parish in the Diocese of Rochester
- Participation in parish life
- Regularly celebrate the liturgy and sacraments
Award Amount: The amount awarded is contingent on the degree that the eligibility criteria are met and on the total amount available in the Kim Mastrangelo Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Who makes the determination?
All applications are strictly confidential. In order to ensure a fair and impartial analysis, applications are reviewed by the Scholarship Committee for evaluation and recommended for approval by its Chair. Thereafter, the Scholarship Committee will review all scholarship amounts awarded to ensure that the applicant remains in compliance with the eligibility requirements. The applicant will be notified in advance if a reduction or cessation in tuition assistance is necessary.

2nd Annual Meg's Gift Golf Tournament
with Silent Auction and Dinner
Saturday, August 13 at Shadow Lake and Greystone Golf Clubs
Last year we raised $60,000 for St. Joseph Neighborhood Center to help those suffering from mental illness and to provide assistance to those with inadequate health care coverage. These results exceeded our expectations, most likely because we have an angel in heaven working as she always did by serving those most in need.
It has been 27 months since our beautiful daughter, Meg, lost her battle with depression. The pain of her loss is ever present to us and to so many others who knew and loved her. We have chosen not to dwell on that loss or that pain. Instead we recall her loving and generous spirit and want to carry it on through MEG's Gift. MEG's Gift is her legacy. Please join us in fostering this legacy. For a bird's eye view of our angel, visit our website at
http://www.megsgift.org/
This year we chose the Veterans Outreach Center (VOC) as our main beneficiary.
The VOC has worked hard to provide comprehensive resources and services to current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces, many of whom suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and substance abuse.
Slots fill up fast so register online for the tournament or just come for dinner. You can also make a donation to Meg's Gift, Inc. or become a Sponsor (see our brochure on our website). The Silent Auction will feature many items from sports, to dining, to overnight stays, and salons. Music this year will be provided by Chris Wilson whose pure and soft style is as refreshing as his values. If you need help please contact Deacon Ray at Holy Spirit Church (585) 671-5520, rgarbach@dor.org or Kathy at (585) 671-7988. Please pray for those who suffer from mental illness and related problems. With blessings and warm regards to all, Deacon Ray and Kathy Garbach
