An Introduction to
Sunday's Scripture Readings

In the hope that you will enter more fully into the Mass

Jesus Pardons the Sinful Woman (Luke 7)
YOUR SINS ARE FORGIVEN
The readings for this Sunday are about what happens when we sinners turn to the Lord in sorrow and true repentance. We are forgiven, freely and with joy in the heart of God.
In our first reading (2 Samuel 12:7-10,13), we hear of King David's heartfelt confession for his grave sin against God. And yet, despite the gravity of his sin, God forgave David..
"Nathan said to David: 'Thus says the LORD God of Israel: 'I anointed you king of Israel. I rescued you from the hand of Saul. I gave you your lord's house and your lord's wives for your own. I gave you the house of Israel and of Judah. And if this were not enough, I could count up for you still more. Why have you rejected the LORD and done evil in his sight?
"'You have cut down Uriah the Hittite with the sword; you took his wife as your own, and him you killed with the sword of the Ammonites. Now, therefore, the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have looked down on me and have taken the wife of Uriah to be your wife.'' Then David said to Nathan, 'I have sinned against the LORD.' Nathan answered David: 'The LORD on his part has forgiven your sin: you shall not die.'"
Our Gospel passage (Luke 7:36-8:3) tells of the forgiving heart of Jesus. Jesus was criticized by Simon, the Pharisee, for allowing a sinful, yet tearful and sorrowful woman to wash his feet. In response, Jesus taught Simon about the great love and mercy of God.
"A Pharisee invited Jesus to dine with him, and he entered the Pharisee's house and reclined at table. Now there was a sinful woman in the city who learned that he was at table in the house of the Pharisee. Bringing an alabaster flask of ointment, she stood behind him at his feet weeping and began to bathe his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them, and anointed them with the ointment. When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this he said to himself, 'If this man were a prophet, he would know who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, that she is a sinner.' Jesus said to him in reply, 'Simon, I have something to say to you.' 'Tell me, teacher,' he said. 'Two people were in debt to a certain creditor; one owed five hundred day's wages and the other owed fifty. Since they were unable to repay the debt, he forgave it for both. Which of them will love him more?' Simon said in reply, 'The one, I suppose, whose larger debt was forgiven.' He said to him, 'You have judged rightly.'
"Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, 'Do you see this woman? When I entered your house, you did not give me water for my feet, but she has bathed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You did not give me a kiss, but she has not ceased kissing my feet since the time I entered. You did not anoint my head with oil, but she anointed my feet with ointment. So I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven because she has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little.' He said to her, 'Your sins are forgiven.' The others at table said to themselves, 'Who is this who even forgives sins?' But he said to the woman, 'Your faith has saved you; go in peace.'"
In our Epistle reading (Galatians 2:16, 19-21), St. Paul reminds us that good works alone will not merit salvation, but faith in Jesus Christ.
"Brothers and sisters: We who know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified. For through the law I died to the law, that I might live for God. I have been crucified with Christ; yet I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me; insofar as I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God who has loved me and given himself up for me. I do not nullify the grace of God; for if justification comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing."
The Sacrament of Reconciliation is such a wonderful gift from God. We come to him in heartfelt repentance and in true faith to hear those soul-lifting words of the priest, "God the Father of mercies, through the death and resurrection of your son, you have reconciled the world to yourself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins. Through the ministry of the church, may God grant you pardon and peace. And I absolve you of your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen." God invites you -- Saturdays 3:30 - 4:30 pm and Wednesdays at 8:45 am or by appointment.

Pastor's Message

June 12, 2016, 2016

"God loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins."  1 John 4:10

I want to thank everyone who was involved with our Fiesta last weekend.  It was a "spectacular" event with really perfect weather, great company, food, music, and for our younger folks, lots of games, prizes and activities.  Our planning committee put together a great lineup of events including a 5K and 10K run, garage sale, plant sale, book sale, car raffle...Thank you again to our huge team of volunteers and to our patrons and very generous sponsors who made it all possible!

Our next big events involve our St. Rita school students as they celebrate "moving up" and "graduation" ceremonies.  You can already sense the growing excitement in the school as summer vacation draws near.  A special 'Thank You' and gratitude for our dedicated teachers and supportive parents and grandparents too!

Finally, please see below a note from Mary Jo DiNoto as she prepares to relocate from St. Rita to Holy Cross Church as pastoral associate.  I personally, and we, will all miss her many gifts, talents and most of all, her kindness to so many at St. Rita.   This is an exciting time for her and we will have the opportunity to wish her well before she leaves in July.

Have a Great Week!
Fr. Gonyo

To all my Friends and Fellow Parishioners at St. Rita's,

It is with a sad and happy heart that I let you know I will be saying "Good Bye" as your Pastoral Associate.

Please know that I love what I do here at St. Rita's. My job has been extremely fulfilling and working with many ministries has brought so much joy to my life. A pastoral associate position recently opened up at Holy Cross Church in Charlotte and it caught my attention. After much prayer and discernment I felt called to pursue this opportunity and I have accepted this position at Holy Cross Church. My last day here will be Friday, July 15.

I have prayed long and hard over what this job change would mean and if it is the right move for me.

The "happy" of this good bye is that this will be a wonderful opportunity for me to grow in my faith and be exposed to new experiences in ministry. I felt a strong calling that it was time for me to make a change in my life to grow, so I accepted this change openly, trusting in the Holy Spirit to lead me in God's will. Since recently moving to the city, it also helps that Holy Cross Church is only six minutes from my house.

The "sad" of this good bye is that I love being part of St. Rita Parish family. I have been a parishioner here for 35 years and am blessed to have made so many good friends and work with an amazing staff that is like family to me. I have worked with many wonderful ministries - Youth Group, Prayer Shawl, Bereavement, Outreach, as well as, Parish Council and Liturgy; assisting couples getting married and with families planning funerals.

I have so many memories that I will take with me and cherish for the rest of my life.

I say 'Thank You' all those who have touched my life and to everyone for being so supportive of my decision. I ask for your continued prayers as I venture forward on this new journey.   I will keep you all in my prayers as we all continue on our faith journey.
God's peace to all of you!

Did You Know . . . .

+   Thirty-six girls, in grades 4-6, have been training with the Girls on the Run (GOTR) program for the last three months. They have been building relationships, strengthening character and creating healthy habits while also running twice a week. Last weekend was the county-wide GOTR 5K at MCC. Over 500 girls ran that 5K and St. Rita's was well represented. Great job girls!

+  This week field trips were at the top of the agenda for the Kindergarten as they visited Springdale Farms. The Second graders met their pen pals at Ontario Beach Pak on Thursday. They have been writing to these new friends from St. Joseph's school all year long and met up to play games and enjoy the time together. They topped the day off with an Abbott's ice cream cone.

+  The Fifth and Sixth graders celebrated the end of the year and their upcoming graduations with a roller skating party in the gym on Friday. Remember how much fun roller skating was?

THE GOSPEL OF LUKE

As mentioned last week, now that we are back in Ordinary Time with green vestments for the next 6 months, the Church reads the Gospel of Luke each Sunday:

1)    LUKE HIMSELF - a Gentile by birth - an early convert to Christ - joined Paul during his 2nd missionary journey - tradition has him a physician - his Greek is the best of the Gospels in syntax and grammar.

2)    SOURCES OF HIS GOSPEL - (written about 80-85 AD as the first part of Acts): Luke uses: a) the Gospel of Mark b) a collection of sayings and sermons by Jesus, also shared by Matthew, known as "Q" c) Luke's own exclusive collection of deeds and sayings d) the Infancy Narratives (chapters 1 and 2)

3)    BASIC DIVISION OF HIS GOSPEL - Jesus is doing His ministry of preaching and miracles throughout Galilee (chapters 4 through 9) - then comes the PIVOTAL VERSE of his Gospel (chapter 9:51, which says "He firmly resolved to proceed toward Jerusalem") thus, Jesus leaves Galilee in the north and heads for Jerusalem in the south, with many things happening along the way for the next 10 chapters - scholars call this the Long Journey to Jerusalem (where Jesus dies and rises - the climax of the Gospel) . . .

(to be continued next week)
