Dear Friends,

There will be no February meeting of the Executive Committee because of the state convention. Thanks to all the delegates that are going to state convention and to all the precinct delegates that came out to the County Convention.

Clinton County Kicks Off Lincoln Day Dinners Season
Michigan Republicans The Clinton County Republican Party will hold its Lincoln Day Dinner on Thursday, April 11th.  Their keynote speaker will be the former Sheriff of Graham County Arizona, Richard Mack.  You may remember Sheriff Mack from his 1994 lawsuit against the Clinton Administration challenging the Constitutionality of the Brady bill. As a result of the suit the United States Supreme Court ruled that the Brady Bill was in fact unconstitutional and that the Federal Government could not commandeer state or county officers.

Because of that suit Sheriff Mack has made it his mission to educate law enforcement officers and the American citizenry about the meaning of being a Constitutional Law Enforcement Officer. Currently he heads up the national office of Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Associations (CSPOA).

In times like these when our 2nd Amendment right is being threatened, Sheriff Mack brings a timely message about the importance of electing true Constitutional Sheriffs and what that means to all of us who believe in our gun rights.

The event will be held at the Eagle Eye Golf Club, 15101 Chandler Rd, East Lansing.  The cost for the dinner and reception is $65 each, or for the dinner only, $40.  Registrations and payments are due on or before Thursday, April 4th and you may register online.  You may also download a registration form and mail it in.

May Be Your Last Chance to Stop Obamacare in Michigan
Repeal Obamacare
Governor Rick Snyder recently became only the 6th governor to back Medicaid expansion in accordance with The Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). The conservative Heritage Foundation has estimated that this action will cost Michigan taxpayers an additional $835 million.  Of course, the key to the Governor's position is that these funds will be reimbursed by the federal government. Well, where do you think that money is coming from?

At least thirteen states have already come out in opposition to the expansion of Medicaid in their states. The New England Journal of Medicine listed the most common reasons cited by governors who opposed or were unsure about committing their states to the expansion:

  • The federal government will renege on funding
  • Concerns about the impact on state budget
  • States need more flexibility, freedom from federal oversight
  • States would have to raise taxes to pay for it
  • Uncertainty, need more information
  • Medicaid is a "broken program," harms its beneficiaries
  • Entitlement programs create more dependency

Additionally, the Mackinac Center and the Heritage Foundation have both published  excellent analysis on Medicaid expansion.

If you're still opposed to the "Affordable Care Act", what can you do about this? Well, the governor has proposed a budget that would include spending state funds for expanding the base of Medicaid recipients. You can contact the chairs of the House and Senate appropriations committees and tell than that you do not support this expansion.  You can contact House Approriations Chairman Joe Haveman and Senate Appropriations Chairman Roger Kahn to urge them to stop this appropriation while it's still in their committees.  A vote may come up at any time, so do not delay.

Welcome Paul Mitchell!
Congratulations to Saginaw County businessman, Paul Mitchell, who recently announced plans to seek the Republican nomination to run for the 32nd District State Senate seat.  Paul is new to politics, having worked for Ross Medical Education Center for more than 29 years and served more than six years as its chief executive officer. He left the company's employment a few years ago and stepped down as a board member in 2012 in order to focus on politics, noting, "It's hard to do both."

Paul believes his business background has prepared him to be a state senator, "I understand what a business looks for when deciding to locate or expand in a community or state and I understand how government can support and strengthen those areas so we can attract more business investment and create even more jobs." He points to the recent Right to Work legislation as a very important step Michigan has taken toward creating more jobs and a better educational environment.

Paul is a Thomas Township resident, and announced his candidacy for the seat during our Saginaw County Republican Convention, February 7th.  The 32nd District seat is currently occupied by Senator Roger Kahn, who will be vacating the seat in 2014 due to term limits.

The Republican mission seeks to maintain a strong defense, encourage individual achievement and liberty through the free enterprise system, and strengthen families.  If you would like to help us move the area and the country towards these goals, please consider donating to the Saginaw County Republican Committee.  Every donation, no matter how large or small, will help ensure that we can find and elect people to work for those goals.  You can do so by mail to PO BOX 6653, Saginaw, MI  48608 or on the web at www.saginawcountygop.com.

Sincerely,
Brian Frey, Chair, Saginaw County Republican Party
