AgriSafe in Action
March 2014

The cold that has blanketed most of the United States has created a delay in soil preparation and equipment maintenance, resulting in many producers pushing themselves to make up for lost time. As you know, these time demands can easily lead to farm-related injuries and illness.

Now more than ever, Ag producers need access to health professionals who understand their occupation.  Take extra time to utilize the professional resources available on AgriSafe's Training & Resources pages.  There you will find a vast library of webinars, safety videos and valuable resources.
March is Brain Injury Awareness Month
Brain Injury Awareness Day is March 12, 2014

Traumatic Brain Injury AgrAbility Resource
Farming Dangers with a TBI

The Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) marks March as Brain Injury Awareness Month. Agriculture ranks as one of the most hazardous occupations which makes the risk of brain injuries high among agricultural producers.

In 2004, the AgrAbility project outlined the problems related to farming and traumatic brain injury (TBI). This excellent resource describes how to prevent and manage a producer with a TBI.

Young farm children are especially vulnerable to TBI due to the nature of farm work and lack of adequate play areas. Hazards such as farm equipment, high structures and livestock can increase the risk of TBI on the farm.

 Did You Know?
Thomas Jefferson was our third President but was a serious farmer.  He had a deep love of agriculture. One of his most famous quotes:

"Those who labour in the earth are the chosen people of God, if ever he had a chosen people, whose breasts he has made his peculiar deposit for substantial and genuine virtue. It is the focus in which he keeps alive that sacred fire, which otherwise might escape from the face of the earth."
