I don't need to attend classes, seminars or webinars. I know what I need to know about marketing.

 

  

 

Oh really? Then I guess you don't subscribe to the saying that you learn something new every day.

 

What are you afraid of? That you'll uncover how much you don't know? If so, what's wrong with that? Classes, seminars and webinars can be real eye-openers.

 

Here are just a few of the benefits of continual learning:
  • Confirm what you're already doing well;    
  • motivate yourself to market more than you have been, by learning that in marketing it's not what you spend, but how you spend it;    
  • compare notes with fellow business owners;   
  • realize what might be preventing your marketing from being more successful. 
 
There is a wealth of information on marketing everywhere you look. I'd be the first to say that it's not all helpful, but it's not that difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff. For instance, when someone tells you that an expensive website will be your magic bullet, run.


When you hear that the social media are the be-all and end-all, take that with a grain of salt. What I've fathomed in the past few years about the social media is that they work better for products than for services. That said, there are services that do well with the social media, but be prepared to invest a good deal of time. Even if you hire someone to post for you, it's your responsibility to provide the ideas for the content.

The sessions that are the most valuable are those that show the common sense aspects of your marketing strategies.

And please note, they usually aren't the ones that are free. Do your due diligence. How much experience do the presenters have, both in speaking and working with clients? How much do they really know about marketing, or do they home in on one isolated marketing strategy?

You want to learn from someone who understands the far-reaching impact of marketing and the value of a marketing mix.
