Church Picnic on Sunday, June 22
Food, Fellowship & Fun

It's summer and a great time for a Church Picnic! We'll gather after the 3:30 worship service on Sunday, June 22, for an evening of food, fun and fellowship for all ages.
Food: Picnic food -- hot dogs, chips, cookies, and drinks -- will be provided. If you have special dietary needs, you are encouraged to bring your own food for the picnic.
Meeting: During the evening there will be a brief meeting to give a congregational update on the  church's visioning process.
What to Bring: Bring a chair or picnic blanket for seating. And if you have any outdoor games you'd like to share, feel free to bring them, too!
How to Help Out: We'll need people to bring grills, cook the hot dogs, set up, and serve. Easy sign-up is available through the church website or by emailing Terry French.
Since this will be a casual, outdoor event for people of all ages, childcare will not be provided. We hope you'll mark your calendars now and plan to be with us!

Thriving DC 2014:
Further Up and Further In
Thursday, July 31-Saturday, August 2

The Healing Center International is sponsoring their annual Thriving DC conference, from July 31 to August 2, 2014 to be held in the Fairfax area. Please consider being a part of this weekend where we learn to connect to each other and to God in both joy and sorrow. We learn to quiet and rest. We heal. We mature. We discover the heart Jesus gave us and we are released into our destinies. Join us this summer as we journey Further Up and Further In at Thriving DC 2014.

This conference will feature Life Model leaders David and Jan Takle and Ed and Maritza Khouri. It will begin with a Multigenerational Community Night on Thursday, July 31 at Truro Anglican Church, followed by two full days of teaching and experiential exercises held at the Hilton Garden Inn conference room. Friday evening will include taking part in the Into the Light Healing & Praise Service sponsored by Church of the Apostles and held at Christ Lutheran Church

You may get more information about the conference by going to the Healing Center International's website or from their brochure.

A Father's Heart
By Kristin Colligan

Last week I commented and referenced an article about healthy parenting. In honor of this upcoming Father's Day, I want to refer you to an honest reflection on fathering from  Faith Gateway (click to go to the article).

This article details the relationship between a father (Roland Warren) and son. This dad was unable to connect with his little son; however, because of this dad's connection to God, he was able to press in, pray through, and successfully express affection toward his son. Warren created a new legacy of affection and warmth for his family. The article also references a book called Bad Dads of the Bible: 8 Mistakes Every Good Dad Can Avoid, by Roland Warren. Bad Dads of the Bible is about learning from the mistakes of some of the most celebrated and godly men of scripture, bringing them into a contemporary setting, and giving today's dads much needed advice on how to avoid these "bad dad" mistakes. For further reviews on this book see these Amazon reviews.

And Happy Father's Day to all our dads! We appreciate you!

Jewish Line Dancing
Sunday, July 20, 7:00-9:00pm

The Healing Center is sponsoring an evening of Jewish Line Dancing and you are invited! The event, held Sunday, July 20, will be held in conjunction with the Living a Joyful Life class taught by Betsy Stalcup, Associate Director of the Healing Center. You do not have to be taking the class to come for the Jewish Line Dancing evening. (Did you know that synchronized movement, such as line dancing, is good for your brain? These types of activities are discussed in the class.)

We hope you'll join us on Sunday, July 20, 7:00-9:00pm at Truro Anglican Church. Basic instruction will be provided; no experience is necessary. Non-dancers can even enjoy watching the fun from the center of the circle, if you prefer. But Jewish Line Dancing is easy to learn -- if you can walk, you can dance!

Opportunities to Serve

There are many ways in which you can serve both the community of Fairfax and the body of Christ here at Apostles. Please consider one of these opportunities, and if the Lord is nudging you, contact the person listed for more information.

Service to Seniors - There are a variety of ways we can serve the senior community of Fairfax County -- from teaching knitting, line dancing, canasta, or Zumba; to offering them basic IT support; to driving someone to an appointment; to helping in the office at a senior center. And each of these is a way of showing God's love for those around us. Click here for a list of opportunities, location, and the contact person.

Community Hypothermia Picnic -
FACETS sponsors a monthly picnic during the warm months to help stay connected with the people who come to the Hypothermia shelters in the colder months. They would appreciate people from area churches joining in, to help connect with these individuals. This is an easy, casual environment in which to meet, share a meal, have fun, and sometimes even have the opportunity to pray with people. The next picnic is scheduled for Tuesday, June 24, 5:00pm at Kutner Park off Jermantown Road. More details can be found on this flyer.

Lay Eucharistic Ministers - Lay persons who administer the elements at Communion. Contact Vanessa Bickle at VBickle@ChurchoftheApostles.org.

Altar Guild - Prepare the altar for the Sunday worship services. A reverential, behind-the-scenes ministry. Contact Vanessa at VBickle@ChurchoftheApostles.org.

Serving in one of these capacities is an opportunity to serve God and also to get better connected with others in the church. If there are other areas in which you are interested in serving, feel free to contact the Church Office

Children's Ministry

"Pops for Pops" for Father's Day -
This Sunday, June 15 is Father's Day, and the Children's Ministry will celebrate this day with Pops, popcorn, poptarts, and popsicles. Join us after the 8:30am service just outside the Chapel for your poptarts and popsicles. And join us after the 3:30pm service at Coffee Hour for popcorn, popsicles, and other treats. Everyone is welcome -- you don't have to be a "Pop" to enjoy this fun!

No Sunday School at 3:30 service this Sunday, June 15 -
This coming Sunday will be a youth-led service at the 3:30 service which will be specifically geared to engage people of ALL ages. Therefore, there will not be Sunday School at the 3:30 service. Nursery for infants through age 4 will be available as usual.

Recycling Collection for Summer Camp
Two More Items Added!

We've posted a list of recyclable items needed for the Crafts and Woodworking activity at Summer Camp. Pam Marsh has come up with another great craft, so she's added two more items to the list: toilet paper tubes and old metal zippers. (Don't we wonder what they'll be making out of those?) There will be bins in the foyers at both the 8:30am and 3:30pm worship services from this Sunday through July 6 to collect your donations. Click here for the updated list. After Camp, we'll share some photos of the amazing items made with your recycled donations! Thank you!

Reception for Starrleen Heinen
by Beth Acanfora

"The favors of The Lord are not exhausted, his mercies are not spent; they are renewed every morning, so great is his faithfulness."  Lam 3: 22-23

A special reception to honor Starrleen Heinen will be held this Sunday, June 15th immediately following the 3:30pm worship service. Starrleen and her husband, Herb, will be moving shortly to San Antonio, TX where she will work as the National Guard State Program Coordinator for nineteen states who partner with twenty-two Central and South American countries.  Starrleen, who is a Lt. Colonel in the Army, will leave her position with the
National Guard Bureau's Joint Staff Plans and Special Projects Division for this move.

Starrleen said, "I have attended Church of the Apostles since 2007, during which time the church has prayed me through two overseas deployments. The first was to Kosovo in 2008-09 and then to Afghanistan in 2012-13." During these arduous deployments the prayers of the people held Starrleen up and carried through to receive her back home with celebration.

Church of the Apostles is so grateful to have had Starrleen with us through these years and is appreciative of the time she gave as a greeter for the 8:30am service. Her beautiful smile will be missed among us! Thank you, Starrleen, for making others feel so welcomed at our services. We look forward to hearing from you, and may God go before you as you begin your new and exciting journey with Him!
