Parish Meeting & Dinner  June 9

 Sunday, June 9

Please mark your calendars for Sunday evening, June 9 for our next Parish Meeting & Dinner. The dinner will follow immediately after the 3:30pm Worship Service (starting about 5:30pm) and the meeting will begin at 6:15pm. The purpose of the meeting is to inform the congregation of the status of the opportunity we've been given to rent property on Pickett Road, and for our Rector and Vestry to get input from the congregation. We encourage everyone to come together for this time of fellowship, information sharing, questions, and prayer. IF this is a project we are to go forward with, it's important that we all be united and committed to the next step for COA.

Dinner for the evening will be Subway subs, chips, cookies, lemonade and water. A $5 donation per person would be appreciated to help cover the cost of the meal. If dietary restrictions do not allow you to eat a sub, we can have a salad available for you. Please contact Pam by Thursday, June 6 at  PMarsh@ChurchoftheApostles.org or subs 703-591-1974 to request a salad. Seating will be available in the Fellowship Hall, and there's lots of space on the beautiful grounds at Vale Road. Bring a lawn chair or blanket for outdoor seating.

Childcare will be available for the meeting portion of the evening (6:15-8:00pm). To register for childcare, please contact Pam at PMarsh@ChurchoftheApostles.org or 703-591-1974.

Summer Camp: Please Sign-up by Monday, May 27

Know a Child Who Might Benefit From a Week at Camp?

Even if you don't have a rising 4th-rising 9th grader  hugs yourself, you likely know someone who does -- maybe a neighbor, a niece, nephew, grandchild, or godchild . . . COA's Children's Ministry leads a Summer Camp that has the regular camp activities like low ropes, creek walks, swimming, games, and archery. But it offers so much MORE! There's biblical teaching, spirit-filled worship, prayer ministry, and awesome counselors to guide the kids through the week. Summer Camp is often a time of great spiritual growth, and also a time some children make their commitment to follow Jesus or open themselves to the work of the Holy Spirit. Please pray to see if the Lord is leading you to invite a child to Summer Camp.

Summer Camp 2012 - b Summer Camp will be held Aug 4-9 (Sunday to Friday) at Camp Highroad in Middleburg, VA. The Children's Ministry, led by Kristin Colligan, plans and supervises the activities, prepares the teachings and worship time, and spends time praying for and with the kids. The cost for the week of Camp is $375 and scholarships are available. We request registrations be turned in by Monday, May 27; however, final registration deadline is June 24. (We have to confirm our spot at Camp Highroad by May 27 and need to have 30 kids attending camp for it to be held. So, if someone knows they plan to send their child to camp, it would be helpful for them to register as soon as possible. Thanks.)

  wave

To get more info on Summer Camp, check out this brochure. A registration form may be downloaded here. Please feel free to pass these along to your friends, neighbors and relatives. If you have any questions, please contact Kristin Colligan, the Children's Ministry Director, at KColligan@ChurchoftheApostles.org.

Finding Joy and Peace in a       Power-Hungry World

In our fast-paced world even Christians can get caught up in competing for power and control. We want to have it all together. But Christ beckons us to travel another road with him, a life centered on relationships where rhythms of peace and joy naturally flourish. At this conference, you will not be exhausted by content-heavy teaching. Instead you will learn and then experience what you are being taught through refreshing, relational exercises that make doing what you've been taught natural and easy. You will experience joy and peace as you train your brain in new life-giving practices you can take home with you.

We hope you will join us for this four-day conference sponsored by COA's Healing Center. The conference will be held Thursday, August 29 - Sunday, September 1, 2013 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Fairfax. (This is over the Labor Day weekend.) We'll join LIVE with Ed & Maritza Khouri and David & Jan Takle, of the Life Model's Thriving Community program.

Registration includes 4 days of training, application, lunch and snacks. If you register by June 7, you get the discounted rate of $325. For registrations received by June 8-August 19, the cost is $375. You may get more details and register online at www.GodHealsToday.org. For those needing lodging, a limited number of rooms have been reserved at the Hilton Garden Inn at a deeply discounted rate of $49 per night. To reserve a room, call the Hilton Garden Inn at 703-385-7774, using code TDC.

Conference Requirements: You need to have taken the Life Model's Restarting or Forming program prior to this conference. Contact the Healing Center for more information on how to meet this requirement if you haven't already done so.

Brochure: A conference brochure may be downloaded here. Please feel free to share this with friends and family.

From the Rector

John Stott on the Spirit-Filled Christian

Our attitude to our fallen nature should be one of ruthless repudiation. For 'those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires' (Gal. 5:24). That is, we have taken this evil, slimy, slippery thing called 'the flesh' and nailed it to the cross. This was our initial repentance. Crucifixion is dramatic imagery for our uncompromising rejection of all known evil. Crucifixion does not lead to a quick or easy death; it is an execution of lingering pain. Yet it is decisive; there is no possibility of escaping from it.

Our attitude to the Holy Spirit, on the other hand, is to be one of unconditional surrender. Paul uses several expressions for this. We are to 'live by the Spirit' (Gal. 5:16, 18, 25). That is, we are to allow him his rightful sovereignty over us, and follow his righteous promptings.

Thus both our repudiation of the flesh and our surrender to the Spirit need to be repeated daily, however decisive our original repudiation and surrender may have been. . .

prayerFocused Prayer

by Beth Acanfora

"For we know that in everything God works for good with those who love Him and are called according to His purpose."     Romans 8:28

At our Women's Ministry Prayer Summit last weekend, which was based on a study series by Mark Batterson called The Circle Maker, we explored praying into the miraculous, which is when "human impotence and divine omnipotence intersect."  Mark conveys the importance of believing that God is for us. Without this most basic belief we will pray small, timid prayers. We learned about praying BIG, specific audacious prayers.  He goes on to say, "Prayers are prophecies.  They are the best predictors of our spiritual future. Who we become is determined by praying "focused, Spirit-led prayers, persistently and consistently". By drawing circles around our families, jobs, church, problems, goals and dreams we can learn to claim and focus the promises of God over each area of our lives and tap into His power with expectancy. Knowing what God wants and wills, and aligning ourselves within His will, plugs us into His limitless power supply.

So, as an example, several members of the church are meeting at the prospective site of the new meeting place for COA on Pickett Road at 7:00am each morning until the June 9th Parish Meeting, to walk the site in prayer. We are claiming the promise of Romans 8:28 as we walk . . .

The Problem Jesus Came to Solve

Presented by Mike Walker, Prayer Ministry Coordinator

Editor's Note: The Prayer Ministry of Church of the Apostles recently held a training workshop for current and recently-commissioned prayer ministers. As part of that training, Mike Walker, COA's Prayer Ministry Coordinator, presented a teaching titled "The Problem Jesus Came to Solve". The teaching was so well received, we were encouraged to share it with the congregation. We hope the following teaching will encourage you in your walk with the Lord.

Dallas Willard says "Grace never opposes moral effort. Grace opposes works as a way of earning one's salvation." It is in patient, disciplined obedience that you begin to acquire your True Self.

This talk is based on a talk by Bob Hamp, from Gateway church in Texas, and poses the question; "What problem did Jesus Come to Solve?" Because the way we define the problem will affect the solution that we search for. What we think the problem is, we will search for answers to the way we've defined the problem. Every one who struggles with their relationship with Christ - from the lone man who struggles with pornography, to a charismatic movement of God in the church that fizzles over time, all of them struggle with a problem and it's not the one we think it is.

When we are faced with challenges, our first response is usually focused on what: doing something. Sin occurs in our lives - what happens? We want to figure out what to do. So we develop strategies. We pray harder. So, our struggles become our focus, and so we end up so often fighting against those struggles - which are the wrong battles. The focus is so often placed on behavior modification rather than having the heart that God desires.

Relief Support for Tornado Victims
A message from the Anglican Relief & Development Fund

The Anglican Relief and Development Fund and the International Diocese of the Anglican Church in North America are working together to direct relief to the victims of the tornadoes in Oklahoma.

No doubt you have been moved with compassion for the people hit hard by tornadoes in the Oklahoma City, OK region - especially in the hardest hit area of Moore, OK.

The International Diocese, led by Bishop Bill Atwood, has a church in the region - St. James, Oklahoma City (The Rev. Tere Wilson, Rector). Bishop Atwood assures us that this parish will be a good relief command post - our local point of contact in directing donations for tornado relief.

For more information on how to give through the Anglican Relief & Development fund, go to their website.
