The City of Allen is proud to help facilitate continued training and education for its citizens. Check out these three great opportunities beginning next week!
#1: Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)
This eight-week course prepares participants to deliver life-saving skills in a major disaster. Training includes fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. The class will meet Thursday nights from 7-9:30 p.m. Learn more about CERT.
#2: Citizens Police Academy
This free 12-week course gives Allen residents an inside look at police department operations. Participants will meet officers from various units, including K-9, SWAT, patrol, criminal investigations and crime scene. Classes meet Thursday evenings, 6-9 p.m. Get more details.
#3: Rape Aggression Defense (RAD)
This four-week course in self-protection meets on Tuesdays from 6:30-9:30 p.m. in the gymnasium at Allen Heights Baptist Church. It costs $25 and is open to women over the age of 17. Teens ages 15 and 16 will be admitted if accompanied by a female guardian. To register, return a completed form and course fee to Allen Police Headquarters (205 W. McDermott).

Learn to Build a Rain Barrel with Allen's Water Conservation Department |  |

Before you plant your fall garden, take advantage of informative classes facilitated by City of Allen Water Conservation. On Sep. 9, Patrick Dickinson from Texas A&M Agrilife will teach participants how to construct their own 55-gallon rain barrels. Residents will learn the basics of rainwater harvesting, including how to collect and store rainwater at home. The $50 fee covers all supplies for constructing your own rain barrel. Register now.
Registration is also open for a free course on fall vegetable gardening. The Sep. 23 class will cover topics such as proper soil preparation, garden design, disease and insect identification, seed germination and transplanting. |

Labor Day Hours for the City of Allen |  |
Due to the Labor Day weekend, several city facilities will close or observe limited hours. This includes recreation centers, City Hall and the library. Please consult this list of closures before visiting city facilities on Sunday or Monday.
Also note that trash service will not run on Monday, Sep. 7. Service will slide one day, with Monday service sliding to Tuesday, Tuesday service sliding to Wednesday, etc. Friday service will slide to Saturday. The Custer Road Transfer Station will also be closed on Monday, Sep. 7.
