Summer is the perfect time for family bonding. From free movies to fantastic parks, Allen offers an array of activities for families of all ages. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Catch a showing of The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon, presented by Allen's Community Theatre. This fairy tale mash-up is presented entirely by teens, with early evening performances that are bedtime-friendly. Performances run July 17-19 and 24-26.
  • Register the family for Don Rodenbaugh Natatorium's Summer Super Splash, offering swimming, food, rock climbing and more
  • Cool off in Allen Public Library's Civic Auditorium with free presentations from Dinosaur George or a showing of The Amazing Spiderman 2.
  • Cool off at the free Celebration Park sprayground or the affordable ($1.75 for a day pass!) Ford Pool.

Home Repair Funding Coming to New Neighborhoods

A successful home repair and rehabilitation program will soon be open to more Allen residents. Beginning Oct. 1, eligible Collin Square and Timber Bend homeowners can apply for funding through Allen's Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). The federally-funded program exists to expand the supply of safe and affordable housing and educate potential buyers about home ownership. Previously, CDBG funding was limited to three Allen neighborhoods: Windridge, Oak Hill and Hillside Village.

CDBG funding also covers the cost of urgent repairs, such as air conditioning repairs, for Allen homeowners with low to moderate income. These homeowners can apply for urgent repair funds, even if they live outside the CDBG's five targeted neighborhoods.

To learn more about the CDBG home repair assistance program, visit our website or contact Patrick Blaydes, planner for the City of Allen, at 214.509.4164.

Recycling at Home: Don't Stop with the Kitchen!

Most people remember to recycle their milk cartons and cereal boxes. But it's easy to forget about other recyclables you might find in your home. In the bathroom, recycle shampoo bottles, hand soap containers, makeup packaging, and the cardboard tube from toilet paper. In the laundry room, recycle detergent bottles and empty boxes of dryer sheets. In your home office, recycle used printer paper, junk mail, magazines and cardboard packaging.

Need a reminder of accepted recyclables? We posted the full list at CityofAllen.org. We also have separate programs to recycle or properly dispose of household hazardous waste and electronics.

Allen citizens recycled more than 9,900 tons of waste last year. Let's increase that number and reuse more valuable resources!
