Help us fight the bite this mosquito season! Our Environmental Health Division has begun identifying areas with stagnant water and treating with larvicides as needed. Mosquito traps are also in place to monitor the mosquito population. Allen began weekly tests for West Nile Virus on May 1 and will stay in contact with Collin County health officials to monitor conditions. Residents can report areas with standing water by calling 214.509.4160 or emailing Environmental Services staff.
Recent rains have escalated the number of nuisance mosquitoes, known as "flood mosquitoes." This species does not typically carry the West Nile Virus. However, you can still fight bug bites by practicing "The 5 D's":- Drain standing water from flower pots, clogged gutters, kiddie pools or other collection sites.
- Use bug spray with DEET.
- Dress in pants and long sleeves when you are outside.
- Avoid being outside at dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.
- Keep doors and windows closed to keep mosquitoes out of your home.

Help Stock the Shelves at Allen Community Outreach |

The ACO Food Pantry is running low on...well...just about everything. Last week its Mobile Pantry actually ran out of groceries during a delivery stop. Once schools dismiss for the summer, the demand will be even greater. You can help stock the shelves by donating groceries (including fresh or frozen items) to the ACO Office at 801 East Main Street. Some of the most needed items include:
- Canned fruit
- Canned meat (tuna, chicken)
- Spaghetti sauce
- Mayonnaise
- Ranch-style beans
The office is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The office is closed for lunch from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
