The Allen Police Department is recruiting residents for the Spring 2015 Citizens Police Academy. During the 12-week course, participants learn everything from criminal law and patrol tactics to effective surveillance techniques. The group may also take field trips to the Collin County Detention Center, Collin County Medical Examiner's Office and the police shooting range. After graduating, alumni become eligible to train for two additional volunteer groups: Volunteers in Policing (VIPs) and Citizens on Patrol (COPs).

The free course begins March 5 and ends May 21. Classes meet weekly on Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Allen Police Training Facility (802 S. Greenville Ave.) All participants must be at least 18 years of age and live or work in Allen. Applications must be submitted by March 4. Spots are limited. Applications may be picked up at Allen Police Headquarters (205 W. McDermott) or downloaded at AllenPolice.org/Academy.
Don't Trash It. Recycle It!
If you have old cell phones cluttering your junk drawers or outdated computers sitting in the garage, you're in luck! On Monday, Allen is launching an e-recycling campaign sponsored by the Texas Commission for Electronics Recycling. We'll share tips for finding a recycling site or even getting store credit for unwanted electronics. Look for daily recycling tips on the City of Allen Twitter feed (@CityofAllenTX) or post your own recycling stories using the hashtag #allenrecycles.
