The Allen Fire Department is recruiting residents for the Spring 2015 Citizens Fire Academy. The 10-week class gives people who live or work in Allen a behind-the-scenes look at fire operations and lessons in proper safety practices. Firefighters give hands-on emergency training, lead tours of Fire Station 5, teach proper fire extinguisher use and more. Participants will have the opportunity to climb a 100-foot aerial ladder, operate the jaws of life and ride on real emergency calls.

The academy meets from 7 to 9:30 p.m. every Thursday, beginning Feb. 26. Two optional Saturday classes are also offered. Applications will be accepted through February 13. Only twenty spots are available. Applications may be picked up at the Allen Fire Department Administration Building (310 Century Parkway) or downloaded at AllenFire.org/Academy.
Renovations Coming to Ford Pool
Allen's outdoor community pool is getting an upgrade! This week, City Council agreed to spend $186,500 on design services to renovate Ford Pool. The pool was built in 1986 and has not received any major renovations in its nearly 30-year history.

Designers plan to add slides and play structures, enhanced competition lanes and a new bath house. Allen Community Development Corporation (CDC) is funding the design phase with a total budget of $300,000. Once the design phase is complete, the city will seek CDC funding for construction.

Residents will be able to enjoy the pool throughout the summer season, from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Construction is anticipated to begin in the fall.
