Whether you're a seasoned gardener or an ambitious newbie, you'll want to mark your calendars for the City of Allen's upcoming Sustainable Landscape Series. The seven classes, offered January through April, educate homeowners on sustainable landscape techniques and practices that conserve water. (And since we know money doesn't grow on trees, we're offering the seminars to all residents free of charge.)

The series kicks off Jan. 31 with "Tomato Talk: Success with Growing Tomatoes in Allen." Dr. Greg Church of the Texas AgriLife Extension will reveal the best growing practices, common pest problems and their remedies, the best tomato varieties to use in our area and more. Future topics in the series include landscaping after a drought, growing fruit in Allen, planting for shade vs. sun and urban tree care. Seminars are held select Saturdays at 1 p.m. in the Community Room at Allen City Hall (305 Century Parkway). Though the classes are free, you must register to reserve a spot; a full schedule and registration forms are available online.

With current lake levels about the same as this time last year, sustainable techniques will be critical to your gardening success. Water conservation efforts, especially those connected to landscape watering, will continue as we move into the spring and summer months. You can find the most current watering schedule map at CityofAllen.org/WaterConservation . You can also sign up for a monthly water conservation newsletter with the latest conservation news and landscaping tips.

Calling All Seniors: Volunteers Needed for 2015!

Finding yourself with too much free time as you approach or enjoy retirement? The Allen Senior Recreation Center is looking for seniors, ages fifty or above, to volunteer for a variety of activities. At the Senior Recreation Center, volunteers are needed to help with reception, food handling and special events. Volunteer opportunities are also available at other parks and recreation facilities and with community services.

If you would like more information, a volunteer kick-off event will be held on Thursday, Jan. 29 from 10 a.m. to noon. However, attendance is not required to become a volunteer. To attend the kick-off event or learn more about volunteer opportunities for seniors, contact the Allen Senior Recreation Center at 214.509.4820.

Doggy Duty: Allen Animal Shelter Promotes "Canines and Cops"

The Animal Shelter hopes a new partnership with Allen Police will help more pets find forever homes. The idea was born after Officer Amy Mills adopted a 2-year-old Weimaraner from the shelter in July. When the shelter shared a photo of Officer Mills and her dog (dubbed "Blue") on Facebook, it quickly became the most-viewed photo in the shelter's history. After noting the photo's success, photographer and shelter volunteer Sheila Brauning began posing pets with Allen Police officers and sharing the photos on the Animal Shelter Facebook Page.

The first photographs, posted in December, featured Motorcycle Officer Marshall Kies and "Latte." The photos generated 90 likes and were shared nearly 50 times. You can view all the photos and see more adoptable pets on the Allen Animal Shelter Facebook page.
