Beginning in August, cartons will be accepted in Allen's single stream recycling bins.

Now that more and more consumers are purchasing products in cartons for convenience, the City of Allen will partner with CWD and the Carton Council to be able to accept cartons in the existing curbside recycling program.

Examples of cartons that are able to enter the recycling stream are ones that used to contain juice, milk, cream, soy milk, soup and broth, egg substitute, and wine. There are no requirements to rinse your cartons. As long as the carton is empty, it is okay to place it in your blue polycart.

In Allen, the results of adding cartons to the list of curbside recyclable materials will decrease the amount of waste sent to the landfill as well as provide an ideal material for recycling into tissues, napkins and other paper products.

Allen City Council Received Concept Drawings for the Fire Station #2 Reconstruction
At a recent workshop meeting, Allen City Council was presented the concept drawings for the reconstruction of the 30-year old Fire Station #2 facility, located on Exchange Parkway in East Allen.

The new fire station will be reconstructed on its current site location and designed to house up to 10 personnel, both men and women, be ADA accessible, and have three bays to accommodate current emergency vehicle dimensions. It will also reflect current architectural trends and include landscape improvements adhering to water conservation efforts.

In March 2014, City Council approved VAI Architects to complete the design which is expected to be finished in February, 2015. Construction is anticipated to begin later that spring with completion in 2016.

Volunteer applications are available online or through the City Secretary's Office, 3rd Floor at Allen City Hall, 305 Century Parkway. Applications for City of Allen Boards and Commissions will be accepted through August 8.

And remember, if you are unable to serve on one of the City boards, there are a variety of civic and social organizations in need of volunteers year-round. Visit www.CityofAllen.org/Volunteers to learn more.
