April is National 9-1-1 Education Month and the National 9-1-1 Education Coalition and the Allen Police Department are encouraging everyone to learn about the importance and best use of 9-1-1 services. Following this year's theme of "Be 9-1-1 Ready" - here are a few tips to keep in mind when calling 9-1-1:
- 9-1-1 is for emergencies only - to save a life, stop a crime, report a fire.
For non-emergencies in Allen, call 214.509.4321. - Stay calm - listen carefully to 9-1-1 call taker, give information, follow all instructions.
- Know where you are - be able to report your location. Whenever possible, use a landline.
- Know your cell phone - cell phones don't provide precise locations. Know your surroundings and landmarks to report to 9-1-1 call taker.
- Old phones are not toys - wireless phones with no active service can still call 9-1-1.
