A portion U.S. Highway 75 that includes the segment running through Allen was renamed this week in honor of Representative Sam Johnson, one of Texas' longest-serving congressmen and a decorated Air Force veteran. The portion of U.S. Highway 75 between the President George Bush Turnpike and U.S. Highway 380 is now known as the Sam Johnson Highway.
"This ceremony is emblematic of North Texans' appreciation and value of service and sacrifice," Johnson said. "North Texas is home to many American patriots, and this recognition is not only for my service, but also for theirs."
Johnson has served in the U.S. House since 1991, when he won a special election to replace Steve Bartlett, who left the seat to become mayor of Dallas. Before politics, Johnson served 29 years in the U.S. Air Force - seven of those as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam, after his fighter jet was shot down in 1966. He penned a memoir about his experience called Captive Warriors.
