ALLen Reads
ALLen Reads kicked-off this year's program full of "tall tales" to get Allen residents together reading one book. The main book, Big Fish by Daniel Wallace, weaves a father's exaggerated life stories as he shares them with his son. Companion books for younger readers are The Chronicles of Harris Burdick written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg (grades 4 - 8) and Feliciana Feydra LeRoux, by Tynia Thomassie, illustrated by Cat Bowman Smith (preschool - 3rd grade). Books have been purchased by Friends of the Library and are available at the Allen Public Library to borrow and share. There are also copies at all of the school libraries through a grant from the Foundation for Allen Schools. So let's ALL get reading!

New Classes Through Allen Police Department to Help Keep You Safe
self defense
The Allen Police Department Community Relations Unit has three new classes to help prepare individuals for dangerous situations of attack or natural disaster.

The Emergency Preparedness class teaches participants how to survive for 30 days in the wake of a natural disaster. The Active Shooter Civilian Response class shows what to do if a shooting starts in a public place. Both of these classes are available to local groups upon request and are now a part of the Citizens Police Academy, which is offered twice a year.

Another new program gives women the tools needed to defend themselves against a criminal attack. Part of the R.A.D. Systems training, this stand-alone course, will be offered several times a year through APD. It includes four sessions of instruction, discussion and self-defense techniques for women of all ages and abilities. Registration will open toward the end of October for the upcoming course with class sessions scheduled for Nov. 11 and 18 and Dec. 2 and 9.

Find out more information at AllenPolice.org where you can sign up for Citizens Observer to get crime alerts and other important bulletins. To learn more about classes offered, contact Sergeant Jon Felty of the Community Relations Unit at 214.509.4359.
