Did you know when we eat out after attending a sporting event, or stop off at the mall for some quick shopping before the concert starts - there is a ripple effect we often don't see? In 2011 alone, tourism travel in Allen had a $122 million impact on our economy and supported more than 1,340 jobs. Junior Police Academy Accepting Applications
Allen Police Jr Police Academy
The Allen Police Department is currently accepting applications for the Junior Police Academy this summer. The Junior Police Academy is free for Allen students entering the 7th, 8th or 9th grade. Students will attend instructional classes on a variety of law enforcement topics followed by practical exercises.

Academy sessions run a full week, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Allen High School, 300 Rivercrest Blvd. Five sessions will be offered this year with start dates of June 17 and 24, July 8, and August 5 and 12.

Keep Allen Beautiful Receives Greenhouse Grant!
Greenhouse grant Keep Allen Beautiful has been awarded a Lowe's/Keep America Beautiful Community Improvement Grant in the amount of $5,000 to be used toward the purchase of a greenhouse for the Urban Forestry Division of Allen Parks and Recreation Department. The new greenhouse structure will be used to propagate plants for the city's public spaces. The Urban Forestry Division maintains the City's urban forest as well as all public park and open space landscape beds.

Enhanced Mosquito Control Efforts in Effect
The City of Allen Environmental Health Division is working with Collin County Health Care Services and other surrounding municipalities regarding the mosquito season and related mosquito control activities. The Environmental Health Division has begun enhanced response efforts which include mosquito trapping to identify species and to isolate possible mosquito populations testing positive for the West Nile virus. Focused monitoring and treatment will occur in areas that surround positive traps.

In addition, proactive efforts will continue to include larvicide treatment of stagnant swimming pools and selected natural areas including creeks and detention ponds along with code enforcement response related to reports of standing water.
