The arrival of the Houston and Texas Central Railroad in 1872 changed the course of Allen's history. Not only did it ultimately connect our community to the rest of the country, it also brought a few infamous train robbers. On February 22, 1878, Sam Bass and his gang pulled off the very first successful train robbery in Texas at our own Allen Station. To commemorate this event and learn more about how the railroad industry impacted our community, the Allen Heritage Guild is holding the 5th annual Railroad History Day at the Allen Heritage Center, 100 E. Main Street. The free fun begins at this Saturday morning 11 a.m. and incorporates a re-enactment of the robbery by AHS students, free music and hot dogs, special guest, Burton Gilliam, and much more.
