SYNOD ASSEMBLY HIGHLIGHTS

The Synod Assembly opened at Christ Presbyterian Church in Toledo, Ohio.  Andries Coetzee of Muskingum Valley Presbytery was elected Moderator and Cynthia Burse of Scioto Valley Presbytery was elected Vice-Moderator.  David Bartley was elected for a second term as Stated Clerk.  Adrienne Adams was elected President of the Board of Trustees.

 

In conjunction with the Mission To the USA partners, the Synod Assembly held a seminar on the Middle East.  The MUSA Partners were Fady Amin, Andria Banoura, Fr. George Makhlouf and Mary Mikhael.  Redda Ibrahim was also an International Mission Partner, but had to return earlier. This was the first of a three year MUSA focus on the Middle East.

 

Raafat Zaki proposed and discussed a discernment process for the future of the Synod in the consultation with Presbyteries in response to the 221st General Assembly mandate to decrease the number of the 16 synods to 12-10 synods.  The process was approved by the Moderators' Committee by the Assembly and includes an electronic study/survey and listening sessions with presbytery councils, synod commissioners, and other related entities.  Presbyterians within the Synod are encouraged to participate in the survey: pcusa.org/synod-study before the due date of 1/15/2015.


 

The Assembly changed the committee structure for the mission committees to Mission Networks.  The three networks are: Grants & Scholarships, Peacemaking & Justice, and Leadership.

 

Doris Evans reported the Mobile Health Fair served 1,442 at 38 health fairs during the 2014 season. The fourth Multicultural Youth Conference at will be held in Hillsdale, MI, June 29 - July 3, 2015.

 

The Synod awarded eight New Covenant Grants totaling $45,000 to: 

  • Barnabas Mentoring Program from Detroit Presbytery for $10,000.00
  • The Expansive Table from Detroit Presbytery for $4,800.00
  • Family Promise of Genesee County from Lake Huron Presbytery for $5,530.00
  • GKAMA Community Garden from Lake Michigan Presbytery for $675.00 
  • Presbytery Point Camp Peacemaking from Mackinac Presbytery for $6,247.50 
  • Artists Worship Community from Muskingum Valley Presbytery for $1,500.00
  • Rainbow for Health Expansion from Scioto Valley Presbytery for $6,247.50 and 
  • Sonja's Place from Scioto Valley Presbytery for $10,000.00.


 

The Synod Assembly passed a resolution to send a letter the Governor John Kasich supporting the passage of HB 163 and SB 125 designed to guarantee all of Ohio's citizen equal right in housing and employment no matter what their sexual orientation.

 

The Assembly approved the 2015 budget of $766,106 and the Per Capita for 2016 will remain at $3.25 per member.
