Dear Friends,

Following the announcement that Maryland's Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI) showed a 2% increase from 2010 to 2011, Governor Martin O'Malley hosted the first national GPI Summit. Leaders from Vermont to Oregon gathered here in Annapolis to learn more about our State's success and how it's measured.

As the first state to use such a tool ---- which augments traditional economic indicators ---- we are excited to see continued improvement in Maryland, and to offer our process as an example for other states to follow.

So, how does it work? Twenty-six indicators calculate Maryland's Environmental, Economic and Social progress. They explain what factors are measured and why, and present resulting trends. A personal calculator also shows how changes made by individuals, if adopted by other Marylanders, further impact the State's well being.

As we move forward, we will be able to more accurately measure our progress and help inform our decision makers how to improve the quality of life of all Marylanders. I encourage you to explore this interactive tool and to share the outcome with your friends and family. Together, we can make sustainability a reality.

Best to all,
Secretary John Griffin's signature.

Happy Holidays from all of us at DNR.
