Greetings!
The 11th Presentation of the Half Marathon on Monterey Bay took place on Sunday, November 17, and was an overwhelming success! Incredibly beautiful weather created perfect running and racing conditions and a record number finished. Congratulations to our male winner Jacob Chemtai of Santa Fe, NM, whose time of 1:02:44 was within 13 seconds of the course record. Our first female runner, Sarah Kiptoo, also from Santa Fe, ran 1:11:21, the second fastest women's time in the event's history.
As the holidays fast approach, we extend to all our warmest thoughts and best wishes for a wonderful holiday and a happy and healthy New Year!

The Year in Review |
Looking Back at 2013
March We welcomed a new race director, Doug Thurston, following the retirement of Wally Kastner in September, 2012. Doug has been in the running event industry for over 30 years, most recently as the VP of Course Operations and Community Development for the Competitor Group, organizers of the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series. He oversees a staff of five and works with a 21-member voting Board and 60+ volunteer race committee chairs.
March 23 was the eighth and final presentation of Big Sur's Mud Run. The decision to discontinue the event in 2014 was based on several factors including the changing landscape in mud/adventure races locally and nationally, a dramatic increase in the cost of participant liability insurance, and the desire to concentrate on our core events.
April The 28th Big Sur International Marathon followed on the heels of the Boston tragedy and a moving tribute at the start by Ron Kramer, representing the B.A.A., was well-received, especially by our Boston 2 Big Sur participants. We received many moving emails and letters from participants who said that running Big Sur helped facilitate their healing process following the tragic events in Boston.
June
In 2013 we were excited to add the third annual Run in The Name of Love to our lineup of events. This successful 5K run and 2K walk featured both beautiful weather and a record attendance. Proceeds from the event exceeded $20K in support of JUST RUN, BSIM's youth fitness program. The event is held annually on Father's Day.
July
Registration for the 2015 BSIM opened on July 15 and sold out in an unprecedented 59 minutes! The Boston 2 Big Sur Challenge also sold out on the same day, followed by 300 charity entries that benefitted JUST RUN, the marathon's youth fitness program, and the Runner's World Challenge. This fast sell-out has led to a re-evaluation of our registration procedures for the 2015 event and beyond. We will detail these new procedures by May 15, 2014 at www.bsim.org and they will be initiated on July 15, 2014.
November
Exceptional weather produced perfect running and racing conditions at the Big Sur Half Marathon on Monterey Bay and contributed to a record number of finishers. Our elite field was one of the deepest ever. Registration for the November 16, 2014 event will open on April 1, 2014 at www.bigsurhalfmarathon.org.

JUST RUN Update |
11,000 children to date are participating in this school year's JUST RUN program. With an ambitious goal of 15,000 participants, it is apparent that JUST RUN is well on its way to another record year! In addition to running/walking, drills, relays and goal races, the program incorporates Just Deeds (acts of good citizenship) and Just Taste to encourage children to make healthy eating choices. The website tracks group mileage on virtual runs across the United States where the children can learn about the geographic and cultural aspects of the areas through which they run.
The physical benefits of running and exercising are well known. "Numerous studies have shown an increase in classroom attentiveness and faster cognitive processing speed following exercise as well as higher academic scores among those who are more physically active," said Susan Love, Program Director. "We are extremely proud to be making a difference in the minds and bodies of so many children!"

GU Raises Funds for Challenged Athletes
GU Energy Labs, the creator of energy gels and the official gel sponsor of BSIM, has raised over $68,000 for Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) in 2013. In conjunction with the 2013 Ironman World Championships in Kona, GU crafted Passion Fruit Roctane gel, a limited release flavor with 100% of the profits being donated to CAF. GU will be running the campaign until the end of 2013 or as long as supplies last. Passion Fruit Roctane can be purchased online at www.guenergy.com or at your local sports specialty retailer.
