Issue: #15Spring 2013
Greetings!

The 28th presentation of the Big Sur International Marathon was held 13 days after the tragedy at the Boston Marathon finish.  Rather than casting a pall on our race, the horrific event in Boston inspired many to unite as runners.  We were touched by the stories our participants shared over the course of race weekend.  Quite a few of our Boston 2 Big Sur runners commented that Big Sur went a long way in helping them heal.  At our Boston Tribute Booth at the Expo, we raised thousands of dollars in donations for The One Fund Boston.

Please read below about highlights from race weekend.

Event News & Updates

B.A.A. Official On Hand at Marathon Start & Finish

We were pleased to welcome Ron Kramer as our guest starter.  Ron is a senior event director for Dave McGillivray Sports Enterprises, the company that directs the Boston Marathon for the Boston Athletic Association (BAA).  His comments at the start honored the three Boston bombing victims with a moment of silence and thanked all first responders.  He encouraged all runners to run as one, Boston and Big Sur, strong and proud!

As one Boston 2 Big Sur finishers noted after the race, "I am especially thankful for the BAA rep that greeted B2B participants at the finish line...He was so supportive and comforting.  The one small act will stay with me for a lifetime."

Thank you for your support of our friends and colleagues in Boston and The One Fund.  You do make a difference.

News Coverage

News coverage of the Big Sur International Marathon proved especially strong this year, with print, radio and television stories as well as blogs and websites reporting on the activities leading up to the race and event coverage.

Coming on the heels of the Boston Marathon bombings, our marathon was contacted by several national and regional media (Wall Street Journal, Sports Illustrated, KGO San Francisco and others) about the impact on our race plans.

Individual runner stories were placed in such locales as Greenwich, CT, Port Huron, MI, San Bernardino, CA and more.  Locally, extensive publicity was noted in the Monterey Herald, Salinas Californian, KSBW and KION television stations, and radio stations KRML, KSCO, KWAV, ESPN and KAZU (NPR).

A compilation of stories, slide shows and videos can be viewed HERE.

On Saturday, November 16, the Pacific Grove Lighthouse 5K and JUST RUN! Just Kids 3K take place in Pacific Grove.

Marathon 2014 Registration

Registration for the April 27, 2014 Big Sur International Marathon and related events will open on July 15, 2013 at 7:00 AM PDT.  Last year, the marathon sold out in 26 hours.  Once the open marathon has sold out, we will open additional charity slots to benefit JUST RUN, our youth fitness program.

The Boston 2 Big Sur Challenge will also open registration July 15 to 400 entrants who plan to participate in both the Boston and Big Sur marathons, six days apart.

For more information on the marathon, visit www.bsim.org.  The website will be updated by mid-June to reflect 2014 event and registration information.

JUST RUN Update

The Big Sur Marathon's national youth fitness program JUST RUN continues to increase in numbers and popularity.  During the past school year, a record number of 11,000 children, representing 109 schools, participated and logged approximately 300,000 miles.  In addition to promoting health and fitness, this award winning, free program offers a solution to financially strapped schools.  It is available year round, encouraging daily exercise and lifelong fitness.  According to program director Susan Love, "We are looking forward to impacting even more children during the 2013 - 2014 school year and welcome and encourage all schools and youth organizations in any locale to participate and to join in on the fun!"

The program can be viewed at www.justrun.org or contact  susanwlove@sbcglobal.net.

A Shout Out to our Amazing Sponsors
We'd like to take this opportunity to thank the many long time and loyal sponsors of the Big Sur International Marathon. Our runners were fueled by DOLE foods and GU on the course, kept hydrated with Gatorade and Private Spring Water, and many used the CamelBak Refill Stations.  At the finish, runners were treated to  Michelob Ultra.

Media coverage in our local area was extensive, with daily articles and news reports from sponsors KSBW Television and the Monterey County Herald, as well as promotional announcements on KWAV radio.  Feel free to click HERE to view videos and links to stories and slide shows from the weekend's events.

Our Platinum Sponsor, ASICS, provided outstanding race shirts and Boston 2 Big Sur finisher jackets as well as complimentary shoe certificates to our top winners.  Runners can cherish their memories with images from MarathonFoto.

Other medal level sponsors whose support enables our organization to put on a first-class event while raising money for charity include:  Runner's World Magazine, The Barnyard and Crossroads Carmel shopping centers, the Dempsey Family, Granite Construction, the Marriott Monterey, Sam Linder Auto Group, Fenton & Keller, Ghirardelli, Grizzled Vets, Little Napoli, Ventana Wines, the Treadmill and Post Ranch Inn.

Finally we'd like to thank the owners of Rocky Point Restaurant who graciously allowed us to use their parking faciliities to stage the start of the 10.6-Miler.
