Slide Repair Ongoing on Highway One

A viaduct is currently under construction just north of Bixby Bridge and about 13.7 miles into the marathon course.  This area was damaged by a major slide in 2011.  This section of the course is a narrow one lane road for several hundred feet and could affect the marathon, 21-miler and marathon relay events.  We appreciate the special consideration of runners and residents for this extraordinary situation.  In order to ensure that participants reach the start of their event in time, buses will be leaving slightly earlier (as they did in 2012) and the schedule for resident, visitor and volunteer vehicle convoys during the race has been adjusted for safety.  The construction is due to be completed by Labor Day 2013.

More About our 2013 Events
  • Due to the construction at the Highway One slide area (see above), families of runners staying in Big Sur will need to drive north to the finish no later than 6:00 AM and arrive prior to 7:00 AM when northbound traffic will be stopped at the Carmel River Bridge. No traffic will be allowed north of the Big Sur Post Office after 6:15 AM.

  • We've got a great line-up for our FREE Clinics to be held Saturday, April 27 in the Steinbeck Forum at the Health & Fitness Expo.  Speakers include Jeff Galloway, Dean Karnazes, and Bart Yasso. There will also be a panel of experts sharing their knowledge on how to run the Big Sur course as well as nutritional and training tips from the editors of Runner's World magazine.  For clinic times, click HERE.

  • We welcome back our Clif Bar Pace Teams who will help you achieve your marathon timing goal, whether it is to set a new PR or just to finish.  For more about this free service, click HERE.

  • The Big Sur Marathon has teamed up with ASICS and Wear your Number to let runners have their official bib printed right on an ASICS shirt. You can customize your bib shirt by adding artwork, photos, text and more. Learn more and pre-order your bib design HERE.

  • We also welcome CamelBak as a new sponsor of our
Refill Stations along the course.  We encourage walkers
and runners to bring their own bottles for refilling at the CamelBak stops located at each aid station.
