Sandy was the worst storm to hit New York Metro in recorded history. Sandy hit NJ the hardest although parts of Lower Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island took severe blows.
Major winds hit the area when the storm first began. Local bridges and tunnels to NYC were closed due to the high winds. High winds knocked huge trees onto streets, homes and cars resulting in multiple fatalities.
Trees often landed on top of utility poles which knocked out power to
homes and businesses for about one week. MHCO was closed for the entire week as we had no power. We were lucky in that our buildings were not flooded! Buildings on neighboring streets were flooded up to three feet of water!
Jersey Shore was devastated. Ocean waves came in and destroyed
hundreds of shore homes and took them out to see. At one point the
ocean cut a channel through a barrier island.
US Army Corps of Engineers is working hard to restore land that
was washed away by the sea. There is also a huge amount of debris
lying on the ocean floor near the shore which will ultimately be removed.
Clean up cost in time and money can only be estimated at this time.
Some reports say three years and maybe 30 billion plus dollars. I
dont think anyone is sure right now.
Storm took lives and property. We will survive and rebuild. New Yorkers are not people who give up easily.
