Highlights of the October 26-27, 2012 Synod Meeting

SOLT Leadership Update nameplateThe Synod of Lincoln Trails held its final stated meeting of 2012 on Friday, October 26, and Saturday, October 27, 2012, at the Philo Presbyterian Church, Philo, IL. We welcomed new commissioner, Teaching Elder Rebecca McClintock, of the Presbytery of Chicago. And we greeted the newly elected Executive Presbyter of the Presbytery of Midwest Hanmi, Teaching Elder Eun Sung Cho. Fabulous meals were served and lovely hospitality extended by the wonderful people of the Philo Church and their pastor, The Rev. Cindy Shepherd.

The Synod continued to explore "The Art of Possibility" by Benjamin and Rosamund Zander - a conversation begun at the July stated meeting. Stated Clerk Doug Tracy looped us back to the beginning of the conversation by challenging us to "see possibilities" using the text of I Corinthians 13. We viewed "The Art of Possibility" video. Bill Lawser, Cheryl Montgomery, Carol McDonald, Jennifer Burns Lewis and Laura Reason led the group in exploring the possibility concepts of:
  • Giving Way to Passion
  • Being a Contribution
  • Giving an A
  • Leading from Any Chair
  • Rule Number 6
In the business portion of the meeting, the Synod
  • Received a report from The Rev. Bob Reynolds, Executive of the Presbytery of Chicago, on behalf of the Synod's Administrative Commission for Midwest Hanmi Presbytery. Bob was publicly thanked for his, and the SAC's, dedication to bringing resolution to this work!

Just.Good.Food. Continues to accept Participants

About 40 congregations are now participating in just.good.food, a collaborative mission project of the synods of Lakes and Prairies, Lincoln Trails and Mid-America. It's not too late to get started. Requests for project information and starter packets, mailed just a few weeks ago to participating congregations, can be made to Sarah Moore-Nokes, associate executive presbyter in Winnebago Presbytery, who is heading the initial project efforts. She can be reached at sarah@winnebagopresbytery.org. A project description is available at "Food."

 2012 Superstorm Sandy

Hurricane Sandy left a trail of destruction in the Caribbean and the northeastern United States. There is significant damage from the superstorm's winds and flooding. At least 8 million people in 17 states lost power.

The road to recovery has just begun. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is committed to walk with our partners through the immediate-relief and long-term-recovery phases of the response. One Great Hour of Sharing funds have been sent, and members of the National Response Team have already been deployed to help mid councils in their response efforts.

The Daily Prayer App is Here!

Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Launches First Smart Phone Application

by Paul Seebeck, Associate Mission Communications

On this Reformation Day, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) launches its first smart phone application - an iPhone/iPad app for daily prayer.

Daily Prayer PC(USA) provides brief services for daily prayer based on the Presbyterian Book of Common Worship, including Psalms for the day, readings from the daily lectionary, and prayers of thanksgiving and intercession.

At this time, the app provides liturgies for morning and evening prayer, automatically selecting the appropriate service and lectionary readings based on the time and date settings of your iPhone or iPad.

Certificate in Environmental Leadership and Ministry

Original Artwork by Shawna BowmanThe timely certificate in Environmental Leadership and Ministry program will be offered again in 2013. This timely program provides clergy and lay leaders alike the opportunity to think deeply and broadly about the growing challenge of environmental ministry in their communities and work. Set in an urban environment and combining the contexts of science, biblical studies, theology and ethics while incorporating the language and practices of the church, participants will come away equipped to serve as a strong resource person and advocate in their own places of ministry.
